View Full Version : Poll: Speeding, How do you drive?

Paul
4th September 2007, 20:29
Alright i keep seeing arguements on here between sensible drivers and boy racers.

Sensible people claim that they never speed, even though they have a very fast car. Unlikely IMO but we'll see.

Whats the point in this thread?
Just wanted to see everyones views on speeding.. I know boy racers get slated big time, but i cant imagine sax-p members not putting their foot down from time to time

But i might be wrong

When you vote, there will be no way of telling which you voted for. Therefor you will not get slated.

Thanks

Payney

I do stick to speed limits, but sometimes have to use harsh accelaration to get out of situations, out of junctions etc.

IMO i'm a safe driving, but fast sometimes.

In perfect honesty... I ragged my 1.2 to shit... screeched tyres and everything, but gone past that stage, now its just now and again, but i don't drive alot so.

I don't rag my motor as it's got 120k miles on it, and theres no point, I stick to the limit maybe do 32 in 30, but no higher, hard acceleration if needed, tend to stick to 70 motorway or duel carriageways.

Usually speed, only on 40 roads doing 50 and 50 roads doing 60+ depending on where Im going.

Ill try not to speed for no reason, but sometimes you gotta go through the paces!

all true bar the 13 year olds there really 14

Streets i drive really sensible when hitting dual carriageways i like to floor it to speed usually do 60mph on motorways as fuel gauge flys down!
Normally at 2k revs at30 in 4th as exhaust pops bangs and farts for the peeps lmao

Overall no i dont speed.......

I drive the speed limit constantly everywhere except the motorway. there, i get a bit carried away and sometimes look at the speedo and think 'shit i'm doing 80'

i come back from work and come off the motorway which goes to 40 then a 30 and all the c*nts behind never slow down for the 30 so they sit up my arse all the time. the reason i wont follow suit... if there's a crash it sure as hell wont be my fault for speeding

i try stick to the speed limits down high streets and normal roads, until some pleb comes right up behind me, then i go even slower. but on quiet country roads i put the toe down within reason, tbh the main reasons i stick to speed limits are so i dont get pulled and so my petrol gauge doent drop like fook, and obviously so i dont run no one down.

im not gonna lie tbh.

on the back country roads near me EVERYONE SPEEDS LOL.

its a 60mph job and everyone does at least 80/90
there is not one camera in sight.loads of bends (if you love rally driving its the road to go on) im usally doing around 75ish but read the road surfaces at all time you could know the road like the back of your hand and it can still get you.its leathal in the wet due to tractors etc etc leaving shed loads of mud on the road surface.

around city/towns/villages i drive the speed limit (as said before its commen sense to do so).

i'd say that i speed about 80-90% of the time

in 20's i tend to do 20-25
30's - between 30 and 40
40's bout 45
50's bout 60
60's and 70's it depends

Built up areas I never speed it, especially if theres a school close by. But most of my daily driving is on fast country B-Roads (trip to Surrey Uni from West Sussex) so the roads are 60, some very long straights (and awesome twisties) impatient executives in their Beemers and Audis that have a loathing for youngsters in Saxos lol, so yeah, guess I do speed daily, if only to keep pace with the traffic. Not dangerours speeding, but over the limit by about 5-10mph on those roads.

I will open the throttle if its safe to do so, On motorways i will go over the limit not much more though.

vidal
5th September 2007, 09:27
Firstly the admission of guilt -

Vidal speeds at times, it's not something I'm proud of, but yes it does happen.

I've been around too long and seen the results of too many over-confident drivers (and pilots, but that's a whole new thread), who have suddenly discovered that the road runs out just a little after their skill (or luck) has also deserted them.

The unfortunate thing is, is that we all have to share the roads with others of varying skill levels, and this does not even take into account the other hazards we may meet at any time - has the lorry just ahead leaked a little diesel onto the apex of the bend that you take at 60 every day? Has a child just run out after his ball in between those cars on a dual carriageway? If we all drove in isolation, I'd have no problems at all with excessive speed, but if I have to share the roads with all the budding Makkinen's and McRae's then I'd like them to show me the same respect that I would show them.

I'm not sure what the answer is, (or even if the QUESTION has been defined), but just saying "speed kills" is not entirely true, yet "Inappropriate speed kills" just doesn't have the same ring does it?

jeeves_101
5th September 2007, 09:42
used to rag my first car, was a 1.2 spi clio so didn't go that fast, then i got a mini and drove real sensible cos its a classic and needed to be looked after, then i got a civic and HAD the ability to drive harder, but only if needed to i.e getting up to speed down slip roads and pulling away from junctions, then finally i got the vts, i would be lieing if i said i drove sensible 100% of the time.

when i first got the s i drove fast abit more than 50% of the time, then i realised, i wasn't really getting to places any quicker and was just using more fuel, i now try and drive very sensible and would say that 90% of the time i do.

MaRiO89
5th September 2007, 09:47
I stick to 30 mph speed limits as they are usually in built up area's where kids etc could be about..

National speedlimits especially dual carriageways become a playground tbh..I dont go stupid but on roads i know will do 70 odd mph on them..

Late at night on the way back from work at about 11 or 12pm i have to go on dual carriageways with roundabouts all along for a about 5 miles so i have a bit of a play..Regularly do over 90mph on them..Only when there aren't other motorists about though..

Throw the car into the roundabouts and stuff..Its good fun..:d

Bang on Vidal - speed, in isolation, is often not the "cause" of an accident but rather the inappropriate use of speed.

not bragging but like there is a 50 mile an hour road all the way to glos

liek A roads, B roads and motorways ect (where there are no cars parked either side, no houses on the road and no small road entrances/exits i put my foot down a little bit usually getting up to about 60-80mph, will normally never overtake, if someone is infornt of me, just slow down to their speed and keep back.. its only fair.. not worth scaring anyone.

How are you stuck in the outside lane? Can your car not turn left? ;)

If the inside lane(s) is (are) solid with no movement, and no gaps between vehicles then I could see the problem, however the Highway Code says that you should return to the inside lane as soon as practicable. I wonder what would happen if you sat at 70 with ze Germans coming up, he's got nowhere to go, so he's stuck at 70 as well. If he tailgates you, that's his problem - you pull over to the inner lane and let him cause his Germanic havoc with others.

I know, this is very true. but due to me being mr caustious about rear ending cars i like to leave some gap between me and the car infront. therefore i would rather accelerate and get infront of the slow moving middle lane traffic than pull in and be wedged in between a kia pride and a ford ka....to be honest.

then as soon as i get in middle lane i give them hard man stare and give wanker signs as they bomb it off.

dont really get a lot of that in patchway..
theres too many speedbumps for them to do it here. there are constantly idoits doing ridiculous speeds up the dual carriageway behind my house though.. all day long aswell, not even just at night.
my mate got knocked off his bike on that dual carriageway when i was back in school, someone was going to quick and didnt stop in time for the red light. broke both his legs and stopped him growing as much

The results are interesting.. No one "always drive safe and try never to speed"

i genuinely did for a long time between my hometown and guildford (infact considerably slower than the motorway speed limit)...

now i tend to stick it about 75... so about 70ish real world.

Ill admit sometimes i drive like a twat, but that's only when i:
A) know the road im on (eg the bends ahead, and how fast i can take them)
B) it's late at night when most innocent drivers are tucked up in bed (and u get the late drunk driver out - usually when im picking up the missus from work)
C) it all depends on the music im listening to (Scouse house i drive like a dick / where as Heart FM, when the missus is in the car i drive nice and slow, cruising if you will)

It pisses me off when i know im on a nice straight road thats empty and has a few islands on then you get Mr Dickhead in his BMW or Merc going round the round about but NOT indicating. And then having the nerve to have a go at me because im up his arse ready to overtake the c**t

Usual roads around town like 30's and 40's ill go just above the limit if it's safe.

Sometimes i feel 30mph on some roads is stupid.

round town its speed limits all the way.

motorways its bout 80 most times.
on the way to trax it was bout 90, but the road was empty and its good quality.(plus i was running a little late :pamic:)

country lanes by me its hard to speed most of the time but its hard acceleration and hard braking all the time.

I drive my car pretty hard and occassionally creep over the speed limit but never in villages, towns, residential areas, or anywhere where I may be putting anyone else at risk. I think it's fine to drive reasonably quickly when it's safe to do so. What I do think is dangerous is tailgating, people that just don't know how to control their car and people who have no awareness for other road users. Going fast on back roads is all very well until you come round the corner and some cunt in a van is on your side of the road. It happens all too often to me as I drive back roads to work every day. You basically need to expect the unexpected and drive according to the conditions. I have the odd blast in my car on an open road and on the motorway now and again but try to drive sensibly most times. It's hard to though given the nature of the car and how well it handles and accelerates!

used to open the car up and accelerate hard to the speed limit in me old car, lost that car due to a fire so lost me no claims

now realise how much that hits you, now i got a vtr i dont wanna hammer it as i know it doesnt exactly fly so youd just look a di** + aint safe and more petty used and chances of getting caught

i think you grow out of it and specially if you have a loud exhaust you realise just how much of a twat you sound caining the car but not really going anywhere :P

In perfect honesty... I ragged my 1.2 to shit... screeched tyres and everything, but gone past that stage, now its just now and again, but i don't drive alot so.

i do neither of the above lol, normal roads i follow traffic unless someone is creaming it (over 40)

motorway i tend to sit in outside and middle doing 80-90

i accerate hard every now and again, make sure its still alive

dont wanna be rude to him, but every post, he speaks as if he's been driving for years, and has been through like 5 cars.. bit wierd if you ask me, i never said shit about driving before i passed my test, after you pass, thats when you learn the most.

so ragging and screeching the tyres in ya 1.2 with your parent/guadian in the passenger seat.. wish i was you

well on my push bike i rag it abou everwhere tbh, doing speeds of over 70mph i think its clever though :)

na, only joking.

If i had a car i'd only speed if its on motorway and safe also i will accelerate nicely when needed to :) i mean you can't do anything wrong by getting to the national speedlimiti :y:

when im bored i ring yates and we go for a race... its a bit uneven so we swap over and race each others car... we not insured to drive each others so we keep it close to home - but we want to be safe and only race in well lit areas like down a high street.

honestly, i drive like a good boy now. dont speed at all, if im speeding, i scream like a prick and slow down to speed limit.

motorways, i stick at 75 on the clocks, so 70 reality. if i want to get past some cock i might go to 80 on clocks.

reason being, ive got 3 points, 3 more and they have my license.

before that, i would just rape it on the motorways. i.e 90/95 30's probs 40, but not often.

but religiously legal now :)

I only ever try to 'play' with silly cars which I know i'll get killed by, eg played with a Bentley Continental GT cos he pulled out on me!

I try to speed as little as possible, my area is speed bump heaven and always has police struttin around the place!

Don't drink so usually take the car out with me and just drive home, have been pulled over and breathalised a few times. Also get my car drug searched on a regular basis, so must really behave. Been thinking about how i'm allowed 12 points now as to whether its actually risking gettin any!

its from the incident i thinkrather than when you go to court

Baz
5th September 2007, 23:34
The process is automatic and neither the Police, the DVLA or the Court has any discretion. If you accept a Fixed Penalty Notice, and the points added take you to 6 points within your first 2 years of driving, your licence will be revoked without any prior warning or a Court appearance.

looks like its when you actually recieve the points

JimoVTR
5th September 2007, 23:37
2years. No points.
just 4 £30 fines, for not wearing a seatbelt... that was in the punto and corsa.
Stopped and breathalised 3.

Yates
5th September 2007, 23:51
but with the offense being within the first 2 years of driving they may be cunts

wheres jonny vts to save the day

Baz

i usually do about 33-35 in 30 zones, but have to admit a lot of my time is spent going down an A road, which ok the limit is 50, but i very often will sit at around 65, (you asked for honesty) still get some drivers doin 80-90 down it like its a motorway though!
