well i can sort the abs light but the warning light i have had turned off twice, both the same thing and both garages said there wasn't a problem and the car was fine!?!?!

was only wondering, as i dont want to keep paying out for the light to be turned off when there's not a problem.

it will fail on the abs light but not the engine management light.

i suppose you might get away with it if you tape it over

I actually think I'm missing something here, and I'd be really grateful if you could enlighten me.

We all spend more money than is good for us on our cars, wanting them to look the best we can, to be mechanically superior to the standard fare, to sound far better than original with custom boot builds etc, and then comes the irony. The OP has an unknown problem with his ABS and possibly something is wrong with the engine, whether a faulty sensor, bad connection or just typical French electrics, but rather than spend money on finding out what the actual problem is, he would tape it up to pass the MOT, possibly risking more expensive failure further on.

Would the more prudent option be to find out what the problem is, rectify it and then go for the MOT knowing that the car is as mechanically sound , rather than just superficial window dressing?

Sorry to tell you mate but i dont think it will pass as on the vt40 it states that your car has abs and how to check it so if the tester does is job properly he should fail it but it s upto to the tester

with regards to vidal, i know the problem with the engine light, as stated before it has happened twice already, AND both garages that have done diagnostics said the car was absolutely sound.

with regards to the abs, i know which sensor it is and haven't had the time to check it yet.

my question to start with, was would it pass with the lights on or hidden?

OK, as full an answer as 04:15 allows. :panic:

Engine management light per se is not a fail, however if it is illuminated due to failed lambda sensor, excess emissions, then the vehicle may fail on the emissions portion of the MOT.

As to the ABS light, if illuminated, then that will constitute a fail. To pass the MOT the ABS (if fitted) has to be working correctly and as you have pointed out, if one of your sensors is faulty, then a fail slip should be heading your way. To cover up the light, or to remove the bulb may in itself not be a guarantee of a pass. According to this page (http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_340.htm) the warning must be present and working.

Hope this helps, good luck.

cheers thank-you.

well with regards to the engine light, both garages said there were no problems or faulty sensors, it just happen to pick up something that wasn't there (if that makes sense), and said the car was fine.

i will be removing the abs sensor and cleaning it to see if this helps/sort the problem.

cheers for your help vidal.

Obviously I can't better Vidal's comments, but just to say that I concur. Hehe. ;)

One thing to note about the engine check light though, I heard that this will soon become part of an MOT, and can cause a failure! So looking at things in the long run, it might be benificial to source out the root cause and get it off for good. Only trouble with the later models of VTSs and 106 GTIs, is that this engine check light is far more prone to becoming illuminated when changes are made to the engine. So MK2 owners are going to have to be that little bit extra careful...

well, i'm going to be purchasing a code reader like the one you have toad, should give me a chance to work it out.

its just annoying that i've had 2 diagnostic checks and both said the car was fine.

Hopefully it is fine, but the chaps who did the diagnostics need to give you more info on the DTC for us to investigate what's actually up with it... Let's see what the code reader says.
