Hi, been a reader of the forum for a good while now and finally got around to registering.
Got a 98 vtr which has 86K on it, its run well until now. Just got the rocker cover, timing belt, new raditor and oil change carried out. Using Silkolene 0w-40 atm.
Problems Ive got now are:
1. Looks like the head gasket has gone, leaking oil quiet bad over everything. Ive been told its more tappy now as well because of the oil pressure is low or the tappets need adjusting.
2. Got a new radiator fitted but still overheats, not sure how to fix this
3. Clutch slips if your in low revs and put the foot down a bit, just revs.
4. Not sure if this is a problem, but the gearbox feels like im changing gear with a bag of coal.
5. When stopping, the engine begins to idel quiet bad
Anyone advise me on how to fix the problems and how much it will all cost. Thanks

Could possibly be the coolant temperature sensor. There is a blue one on the right of the block that goes to the dials and a green one I think on the radiator that goes to the ecu, I'd check both of them to be honest as I'm not sure if the blue one also has a more important function.

1and2) if you think the headgasket has gone this would cause the overheating ,
are you looseing water ??
have u checked for like gunk on oil cap or water cap.
3) no expert but if clutch is slippin dosent this mean new clutch time
4) could just need new gearbox oil mine felt really stiff i changed oil now it is smoth
5) this could just be that you need to clean the idle control valve or replace it mine again did this i cleaned the idle control and now it is fine
sorry for the bad news but welcome to owning a saxo anyhow hope you get the problems fixed .taz. :y:

You may also have a break in the gasket between the cilinders i had this when i reved hard it made a loud click sound & miss fired badly. It was uncomfortable to sit in at around 10,000 revs. Pressure test the cilinders they should all read 200 PSI(i think its PSI) if not, it could be a few things.
Check the ceramic insulator is intact around the electrode. If not it may have fallen into the cilinder and caused scoring.
Most garages i went to told me to get a new engine. Insead i part x'ed it for £1100 and got a 2001 VTR. Best descision i ever made

I meant to say:-
Check the ceramic insulator is intact around the electrode on the spark plugs. If not it may have fallen into the cilinder and caused scoring.

Thanks for the advice, its going in for repair on wednesday next week so unfortunatly no driving it till then. Will get the garage to see where the head has gone and will ask them about the ceramic insulator on the spark plug. Would do it myself but aint got the right tools at the moment. Really need a haynes manual as well.;)

the radiator could have an airlock in it, but if the headgaskets gone it will overheat anyway :homme:

Thanks for all the help, been getting a few suggestions. Head gasket has obviously gone by the looks of things so radiator will now be getting refilled to see if oil has got into it.
Other problems like popping out of 5th, suggestions such as engine mounts having gone, selectors needing replaced. Like I say it will be going in for repair. Saxo is too much fun to get rid off no matter what problems there are.
