View Full Version : Few problems

Alright people, this is my first post so be gentle. Basically my girlfriend has just bought her first car, a T reg Saxo 1.4 West Coast. Theres a few problems I'm trying to sort out for her and wondered if anyone could help.
1. Her brakes feel really spongey. There seems to be a lot of travel before the brakes actually work, is this normal and if not what needs doing?
2. It is making a rattling like noise from the engine area when the clutch is pressed. This only happens when stationary and goes away with any revs? Could this be the clutch bearing or would that rattle when the clutch is not pressed? Any ideas?
3. Both the drivers and passenger doors dont stay open. Do they need new parts or is it just a case of tightening a bolt?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers :y:

1. bleed the brakes and top up the fluids
2. could be the manifold cover, the bolts usually come loose and make the rattling noise but get under tehre whilst its running, wear a glove and try to find out what it is
3. is there a strap on it???

i have this problem think its just a case of changin the mech/hinge type thing that hold the door open (metal bit that goes into the door)

Thanks a lot for the replies. I was planning on bleeding the brakes, will that solve it then?
Il get under there in the light tommorow after work, would the manifold cover only rattle when the clutch is in then? I hope its something as simple as that.
What do you mean by strap?

the straps are the metal bit that goes from the door to the car. they are supposed to stop the door from closing...unless they are worn.

Ah right, will check in better light tommorow. If it does have them then whats the advice?

Probably breakers yard is best bet, probably only a few quid. I havent had to do mine yet, although they will probably need doing shortly.

Dont get the door/check straps from a scrappy. Theyre not overly strong on a Saxo anyway so the chances are anything from a scrappy will be fairly well worn anyway.
You can get them from Citroen and theyre £15 each. They can be fiddly to get into place, but theres only 4 bolts then that need doing up.
Easy job to do :)
This is what the part looks like. Its located between the 2 door hinges, only half of it is visible when the door is open though

Thanks for the replies, really helpful. Where could I get a part number for it or would I be better just going to citroen and asking for door straps?
Anyone any ideas on the other problems at all?
Thanks for the help

Ive got a receipt somewherethat would have the part number on but itll take ages to find it. Got 2 folders full of receipts and service history now lol.
Best thing to probably do is take off one of the old ones first and take that in with you too to be sure its the right one. :y:

Cheers mate :y:
I'm going to have a look under the bonnet to see if anything loose is casuing the rattling but after doing a few searches about the clutch noise, most people seem to think the rattling could be the clutch release or thrust bearing? Are these the same thing? Can they be bought seperatley or will I need a clutch kit?
Do people think the brake problem is just that they need bleeding then?
Sorry for all the questions lol.
Thanks :y:

the rattling you are hearing is probably the heat shield. iv had it, but i just bodged mine by filling the gaps in it with lead!!
stopped the rattle tho lol

Would the heat sheild only make a noise with the clutch pressed? Anyone got any under bonnet pics where they can point out what Im looking at filling or tightening please?
The gears seem to be a bit hard to engage too, is this common?
Cheers

And is the brake problem just the bleeding, as they travel so far it feels like ur pressing the clutch before the brakes actually start to work.
Thanks
