fuel leak

my vtr decided to pop the fuel pipe clip of the fuel filter this morning and left about 40 litres of petrol all over the road how can i stop it coming of again as it seemed to be just a random breakage! and is it a common fault?

im sure my fuel filter didnt even have clips on, you could use normal hose clips i suppose but dont tighten them too much as the metal lip is pretty thin on the filter.

mine seems to have the same type clip on the end of the fuel pipe as what my oil breather pipe has on the rocker cover.
