Right.......

What am I looking for when it come too buying a DECENT turbo'd motor.

When I say decent I mean one that isn't gonna cost me an arm and a leg in the SHORT TERM.

What should I be asking about it and looking out for engine wise?

Better yet does anyone in the Yorkshire area who's in the 'know' fancy coming with me too my viewings?

I'm looking at a R5 GTT.

Cheers.

make sure its not been warmed up before you get there, ask to see it from a cold start, any turbo problems should show when cold, i.e. smoke etc

reno 5 arnt realible

there not to bad if they are and have been looked after.

plus, it actually the T2 on them that causes most issues, if upgraded to a T3 they are alot more reliable.

yeah renault 5s with eat a hole in your pocket from running costs as not reliable, how much u got to spend? could look at starlet glaza 1.3 turbo, punto gt 1.4 turbo, escort/fiesta rs turbo, charade gtti turbo,

I've also heard the R5's are not reliable at all. I would look at a punto gt personally.

yep, be careful with the r5 turbos as the engines were very unreliable.

this may help you:

5s are only inreilable because too many people just wack up the boost with out uprating the cooling systems. Don't forget that the youngest 5s are at least 15 years old!

I really like the R5's for hardcore retro old skool turbo mentalness.... but they are unreliable!

i know a few people who have had r5 gtt's i wouldnt touch one with a barge pole unless replacing turbo stem seals etc is your idea of fun, GTI-R or 323 GTX ftw...glanza is also a good car if well cared for, dont buy a cheap dog or you'll be crying forever

doesnt take a genius to say if u actually want a relaible turbo... plain and simple stay away from the ren 5

iv heard the pulsar is awsome but can be costly on maintenance, but then again if your going to have that kind of performance car your gonna have performance costs

i wouldnt say its decent, but personally id go for a punto gt, due to looks and performance, i think pulsars are ugly, maybe quick, but not exactly attractive imo.

R5 GTT's are fun little things, but when new they were hardly reliable, now I'd imagine most have bits falling off lol. They're old and will be *very high* maintenance to run. If you want a little good value Turbo motor I'd suggest some of the Jap models the others above mentioned. In the long run you'd reap the reward of less repair bills.

LOL... but totally agree. Why bother getting a turbo'd car when you are still young/inexperienced?? I have got a Turbo'd car, but then I'm 28.

If I was looking for a cheap turbo smile factor car,
Id buy a Starlet...

ShaneVtr
2nd October 2007, 12:52
i went out in my mates dads moded scooby 300bhp at the wheels. Nothing i have ever been in compares to that, massive smile factor. Iv been driving for over a year and a half and have pretty much every licence, from car to class 1 lorry to tank. Nothing comes close to having your head wrenched back.
The vtr is depressing now lol. I know im young but im not an idiot while im driving and know when i can put my foot down... oh the insurance companys arent listening il just shut up....

IMO opinion the Starlet is the best turbo option for younger drives. Not too expensive to buy nowadays and massive potential available. Would only ever have a white one though! Stay clear of R5 Turbo's, you will be forever under the bonnet on weekends.
