CloVis

Right I have had a few interviews recently, which involves me pulling several sickys.
How do I go for interviews without getting the sack, or is it a risk i have to take?

Take last weekend for example, i had a interview Friday (sicky pulled)
An Assesment day on Monday (Sicky pulled) and now ive been asked back for another interview tommorow. Its hard enough ringing up these places as im at work through working hours.
Just wondered how Im supposed to do it? Or do i risk being sacked??? They havent said anything yet, because we have no manager, im just thinking they might be getting worried.......

Just hope that your new employer doesn't ask your present employer about your sickness record. You current boss won't be best pleased if he found out you've been playing him for a mug. Your prospective employer will think that you couldn't care less about loyalty.

As for your colleagues who had to do your work for you, I expect they were overjoyed.

The way to do this is to be flexible with both. Ask your current employer formally for time off, offer to make this time up, or to take the time off as unpaid leave.

If one of my staff kept dropping her colleagues in it by not turning in for work repeatedly then they would be an ex-member of staff.

If you really don't like your job, and you reckon ytou have a good chance of getting one of the ones that you are going for then pull a sicky.

I hate people in work who pull sickys constantly.......The ones who book the friday off and take a sicky on the thursday aswell to have a longer weekend....

this happened at my Dads work,

My Dads on the interview panel...

Bloke rings in sick to his boss, as he needs day off to go to this interview..

Little did he know his boss was also applying for this job.

Til he turned up to the interview and went white as a ghost...

You say you don't want to "let people down by pulling sickys, thats why i I have asked.. Hmmm", then you go on to say "And yeh im so desperate for a new job. " So which is it, are you genuinely sick or not? If you are sick, should you be going to an interview?

Omg, what is your problem. Dont give me advise please, id prefer not to hear it. Say whatever you like, i cant be bothered with sarcastic people like you again, had enough of Jonny.

And as for saying am i ill, well i have just said i have taken sick days but am really going for an interview, yes im asking 'what to do' cos i am aware its not fair. My god.

And yes, i was allowed the space when i joined, so it does 'have my name on it'.

And for the record, im well aware 'this is life'.

No problem, you asked for advice, it just that it's not what you wanted to hear, You cannot just take sick time off willy-nilly and expect your manager not to notice. When you go to your next job they may speak to your current HR department and ask about attendance records. It does not look good having many individual days off.

As to the parking space, unless it is specifically yours, not just a verbal agreement then you have no more right over it than any one else.

Or just speak to your current boss and explain your situation....

Tell him you are not happy
Tell him you attending interviews
Come to an agreement on factoring those days off as holidays

10th October 2007, 11:13
Here comes my view ...

Can't sack you for asking for time off for an interview, as chris said unfair dismissal ...

If they ask why you are lookin for interviews, explainin more money and better job potential, this way they can either offer you a promotion tryin to keep you on or even be proud that your goin else where, just gotta do some serious tonguin up to them if they have any questions ...

As for absence ... if you've got a valid excuse they can't do nothin about it, everybodys allowed to be sick lol just say youve got an immune system defiency or somethin?

That is why i was f*cking asking!!!!! Stop being so high and mighty. Change your name to Jonny and go on my blocked list will ya.

To other ppl, I think everyone here is aware of me wanting to leave, as i spoke about it with my old manager.
Its just actually getting out of being at work on such short notice.

Want a bet... my boss never questions my illness :p

Only once when I went home early cos I was having dizzy spells and when I felt better later on (out of work hours) I went out with my friend. She found out and spat her dummy for all of 2 seconds until I'd explained that I'd actually sorted myself out

You make it sound like every single boss across the country is some super-human being that doesn't miss a trick ;)

agreed mate!

by law you are allowed to take time out of work to go for meetings/interviews or anything else, if they ask you to work it back it will be because of the company policy

but as chris said unfair dismissal which they can get done for if you appeal it

Sorry Amy, factually incorrect. The OP is NOT entitled to ANY time off for interviews. (special considerations when compulsory redundancy is a factor)

Im in same boat tbh!! Iv kept having days off to attend meetings with mortgage advisor and also 2 interview, and if i get the job im expected go to back again to meet this other person who i was supposed to meet on my second interview.

If i dont get this job then i will have to go for yet more interviews = more days off. My work are okay with me taking unpaid authorised leave but wont let me take it as holiday even though i have 4 days remaining. For the fact they know im leaving sooner or later and they dont want to pay me for going on my interviews.

Its annoying but be truthfull i say! Pulled a sickie last thurs n friday and omg i felt soooo guilty cos it was pretty busy apparntly but never mind lol

Just pull a sicky as you have already and not cared before so you might aswell just do it again.Im sure they wont sack you as i take it you havent even had a warning about it before.

Vidal dose talk the truth and you know he is right about this.

EDIT.But i would tell them that will need time off in the future as you will need it for a few interviews and offer to make the time up or have it as upl.
