vtr engine problem

wee girl round my estate has a vtr and when your driving along and you rev past 5250 rpm, the car cuts out and dies and engine management light comes on, until you lift off....and it will be back to normal!!

seems like fuel starvation...any ideas people???

change plugs and fuel filter see if that stops it wont hurt to do it anyway
