Right, getting this built up for me :y:
Spec:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ Socket AM2 Black Edition 3.20GHz
Thermaltake BigTyphoon 120 VX LGA775 & AM2 Heatpipe Cooler
Asus M2N32 WS Pro nForce 590 SLi (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
nVidia GeForce 8800 640MB (cant remember if its the S or X)
OCZ 1GB 800mhz RAM X2
Western Digital 7200rpm 500GB
Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Soundcard
NEC Optiarc AD-7170S-0B 18x DVD±RW/DL/RAM Serial ATA Black

I'd swap the Thermaltake CPU fan for a Zalman, much cooler and quieter!
The graphics card, I'd personally save that little extra and get the 768mb version, you won't be disapointed!
The OCZ ram I've heard bad things about, I'd stay clear and get corsair or some other make, also look out for timings, 5-5-5-12 etc. The smaller the better, eg 4-4-4-12 being the better of the two.
Also another point; don't buy one big 500GB harddrive, buy two 250GB ones, then if your O/S fails you, all your music etc won't be lost too!
The sound card is a good choice, but I've just picked up my self the Music Xtreme card (for the same price), which in all reviews is much better than the Gamers card, has more functionality etc. The only gamers card thats any good is about 150£ and its under the fatal name.
If you've already bought it then fair enough its a good machine, just thought I'd help incase you hadn't. :)

hard drive wise, i already have a 500 external WD. so i will be using that too.
guy thats building my PC uses OCZ on his Pc, and has never had any problems with it
and i would get the 768 GTX, but its just more expensive...
unless you know of somewhere i can get a new one for dirt cheap??

Jacko
14th October 2007, 00:50
as far as tv/screens go i rate LG's...a mate of mine has one ..ill try and find out the exact model..its 27inch(i think) 5000:1 contrast...and supports 1080i HD...i think it was touching 400 quid though...

My Puc monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 19", bit of a beast tbh, Really nice and crisp even though it's about a year and half old..
And my luccadatuuve is a Samsung 37" one, it's ready for the hud also :y:

Holy. Shit. Does that say 64gb ram... Are you on a box by any chance?
And Viper, that gfx card is spot on, but the lower priced intel quad cores are not worth paying the extra for IMO, the black edition will be faster for games etc... the only quad core I would buy is the extreme one at around £600 as that has the best performance on thee market ;)
Karl
16th October 2007, 07:54
64 GB RAM ~ How?!
Mystic
16th October 2007, 07:59
Some kinda server id assume, 4 identical HDDs for some RAID configuration.
2x CPUS
Cant quite figure out why the gfx setup
But again multiple HDDs, fat chunk of ram & gig ethernet = lots of simultaneous file transferring
Karl
16th October 2007, 08:02
Yeah I guessed it was a server,
can someone point me in the direction of a 64GB RAM allowance on a motherboard?
Link me.
Mystic
16th October 2007, 08:08
http://www.rackmountpro.com/prodimages/s5383.jpg
That board would take more than 64GB
Go on the dell website and look at some of there high end rack mount servers... ridiculous spec & cost. Some companies will have 20 or 30 of them kicking around too!
64GB is alot of RAM for only a dual CPU server though i think?
lyndon
16th October 2007, 08:08
It will be far too big for your case lol
Karl
16th October 2007, 08:18
Is a fooking shed load Mystic, lmao.
Scott
16th October 2007, 08:28
its not a server its a desktop...
Some of our servers laugh at 64gb RAM. Some of them take 512GB+ of RAM.
spec wasnt for anything in particular I happened to be doing some other work and had that open so though i would spew out some spec for you:p
DarylVTR
19th October 2007, 13:28
How on earth do you get 512GB of RAM that cant be true. Servers at our place only have around 6GB max.
As farr as im aware the max you can get in 1 stick is 2GB so that makes that motherboard 32GB RAM?!?!?!
Thats crazy if true...........
Mystic
19th October 2007, 13:46
its not a server its a desktop...
Yeh i suppose that explains the gfx cards & relitively small storage space (for a server anyway)
How much ram is on a single stick for one of the high end servers though? Would take a hell of alot of processor time to shift 512gb, not to mention the further from the CPU(s) the ram chips are, the less useful they become.
Sure its not 512mb :homme: ;)
Scott
19th October 2007, 13:55
the desktop will take 5 x 750GB discs but i choose the smaller higher rpm discs just as a for instance.
The server that takes the 512gb has 32 processor sockets. New bad boy takes 1024GB ram and 64 processors.
Get some real servers Daryl and what decade are you in with only 2GB ram on a stick:P These use 4GB sticks.
Also these are very true, they are built in the factory thats joined onto our office here. Wont get much change from your pay check buying one of these though.

19th October 2007, 13:58

where do you work scott?

19th October 2007, 14:20
64 processor, 1024gb ram servers mean business. Would love to have aplay about with a high end server.
The only servers i have access to here are our file server & webservers, which are all essentially just PC towers
Viper
19th October 2007, 14:21
question:
with a server, can you use it as a normal PC?
i.e could i whack halo/BF2142 in it and have a play?
DarylVTR
19th October 2007, 14:29
i just got handed a proposed new server spec it only has 4GB of DDR2
and 3 x 140gb HDD's pritty shit for £15,000 to be honest. RM SUCK
Viper
19th October 2007, 14:36
RM are shit!! i think every PC we had at school was RM. absolutely bollocks!
4gig of ram in a server? lyndon has that on his home Pc. haha!!
3 140 HDDs?? thats shit! so, where's the 15k going to? lol
Mystic
19th October 2007, 14:41
RM are the main suppliers for education institutes, if you dont buy there crappy server, they wont give you anymore cheap desktops ;)
DarylVTR
19th October 2007, 14:44
we have to buy RM as its in the contract. Hardware comes to £6k .... .licenses and software £4k and installation is £3.5k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rest is warrenty and support costs. shocking.
Bak on topic viper ive got 4gb at home DDR2 800Mhz and its really good stuff. That spec you havew made up will fly.... just try get SLI if possible.... although ive noticed INTEL boards seem to be ATI not NVIDIA so its crossfire not SLI
Viper
26th October 2007, 00:00
good news is always welcome news!
CPU is 2.6ghz (quad core...)
guy whos building my Pc reckons it will be perfectly safe to do a nice bit of over clocking.
so im not going to be running a 3.0ghz quad core. fuck yeah baby! :panic:

Thermaltake make some nuts coolers like, im still using the same one i bought 4 years ago which everyone laughed at then, your takes the piss though, i was almost gonna get that for my server like 2 weeks ago but not if thats the size of it lmao!

29th October 2007, 14:20
haha, PC was running at 34 deg C without the fan even working. so that means it was just the heatsinks!!
its a fucking good cooler. lol
mystique, your tower looks sweet!
still need to own you at halo some time!
DarylVTR
29th October 2007, 15:00
34 degress with no fans? Hmmm your mate is BS you lol
GTX's run at 50 - 70 degress, my rigg in same case runs around 42 overclocked so not bad but 32 degrees seems abit too low! :p
Viper
29th October 2007, 16:00
tbh, i dont think dave would Bs me. lol
he would gain nothing from doing so.
if you think of all the fans in the antec, and all theh eatsink pipes on the big typhoon, it might be possible, but it would also depend on how long the Pc had been running i suppose
