Theyre not illigal on cars registered before 1999 or something. People i know have been pulled with em and not been fined because their cars are older than 1999. If it is newer i think it depends on how much the coppers getting whether he does you for it or not

Vehicles constructed before 1.1.73 may display traditional style "black and white" plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate.

Disclaimer
French Plates are not road legal on UK cars driving in Britain. They are therefore sold as French show plates for off road use only. More about the Law regarding French show plates

Been saying this for AGES! It doesn't matter what year the car is, the onlt LEGAL extras you can have on the side of a plate is a GB or EU flag

correct, also another thing, after oct 1st 2007, your car WILL NOT pass an MOT with ANY plates not displaying a manufacturer's POSTCODE, if you are caught and your car has been MOT'd after that date, they invalidate the MOT and a £60 fine *G.Brown is screaming ching ching* so that means the car will need a retest, obviously the new test will be the going rate, so thats 60 + approx 55 + shit loads of stress
