View Full Version : What would you choose?

Looking to upgrade from the VTR, i have narrowed my choice of cars down to these two:

Clio 172
Ibiza Cupra 1.8 20VT

Now i want to get something fast and sporty, but reliable and reasonably cheap to run.

It also needs to be safe, seeing some of the crashes that have happened to members of this site, this has jumped up my priority list.

I looked at a Lupo but they are too expensive for what they are.

I want climate control and xenons, and have around 5K to spend.

What do you guys think?

Have i missed any cars out that may be worth considering?

Cheers for any input guys.

I could get an ibiza sport, the diesel version.

Thing is i dont want to modify my next car, so please dont say get this and do that to it. It will be left standard.

Also it may be worth noting that i will be getting a 2002 model of both cars most proberly.

quicker than the vtr
good build quality
within the price range

Clio if you don't want to modify it, as it looks nice standard. Cupra if you do want to mod it as you will want to play with the engine, trust me! :P

Depends on which Ibiza, the newer one or the more square shape one? I love
the Ibiza Cupra R:

http://www.in.gr/auto/dokimes/pr_dokimes_ae/foto_middle/Cupra_R_front.jpg

but they cost a lot more than the Ibiza Cupra (again older shape I mean)

Think I would rather go for the Clio 172 tbh though. Would get one in dark blue
and slap some anthracite speedline 2020s on it. People should give me money
to do up cars nice me thinks. Like this but the Monaco Blue and not Speedline
Turinis, 2020s:

Thats just my opinion mate (ignore the modding references)
Im bias and love the way french cars are more alive and require more driver skill.
Raw power doesnt excite me, its the drive :y:

Ibiza.... just never been a fan of that shape Clio.

Chris :)

For fun and driveability i think that the clio wins it, you also get more for your money imo. For example you can get a really good clio 172 sport, thats the model with xenons, ac and the leather/alcantara interior for 5.5k

You can also get a 172 cup, lighter and wider track for the same money.

Does anyone know when seat were taken over by VW? The ibiza's imo are more grown up though, which is what i want.

Thanks for putting the pics in rush, i would be going for that shape cupra (mk3). I doubt i could afford the insurance on a Cupra R though.

I will check the polo gti's out now. If i got one of those i think i would always think back and want a Lupo GTI though.

Why a lupo what engine are they?

BenSilverSaxo
16th October 2007, 16:09
1.6 16v matey, same as the engine in the polo gti. Just spoke to my insurance company and they cant give me very good quotes on the cars, which is pretty annoying.

Problem with the Polo is its soo damn small! I love it to bits, but its like....

Shame about the insurance. Have you tired that moneysupermarket.com or what
ever it is? Elephant is another semi-good one for finding quotes?

Just keep try diff ones.

Adrian Flux insure me at the moment so i thought that they would do me a good quote, i dont really want to change the company im with because i will lose my no claims.

Is this the Cupra R built in '01 with 180bhp? I think there's a guy on here that's just bought one of these - can't remember his name. It's a car I thought about getting a while back. Nice car.

Evo tested it at 7.1sec to 60mph and 20.7secs to 100mph which I think is a bit disappointing considering the spec. It isn't a heavy car either.

If you look hard enough, you should get a decent 172cup for about £5000. You can get a good 182 for £7000 now as well.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the Clio more and like I said, if you look at some roadtests, you should find the Clio a bit quicker.

172cup gets my vote but I'd get the Cupra if you're looking at a phase1 Clio or a non cup pack 172 phase 2.

both are great cars mate, i had a ride in me mates clio trophy and my god it shifts

rushy_23
16th October 2007, 21:36
Yea the Cupra R is 180bhp but Ive been told the Cupra is easily mapped
to above that figure in standard form.

Only issue I find with the 172 cup is no ABS! The Trophy is pure porn. But a bit
too rare imo. I would be scared as hell to drive it encase it gets nicked.

clio172 definatly, my boss has got one. their proper nice.

16th October 2007, 21:43
Both lovely cars, its a hard choice.
For me i'd probably go for the cupra, yellow one's look lush.

BenSilverSaxo
16th October 2007, 21:48
Its very equal, i think the cupra would be good for on the motorway. I think that the clio's are pretty common which has dropped their price. I would go for a clio sport because that has the added extras.

SaxoJamie
16th October 2007, 21:52
I've always liked the Cupra's as they're quite good looking and fast:y: Cupra ftw

Cupra is a bit more grown up. Clio to me is a saxo driver that doesnt want to grow up lol

OLLYVTS

It would be the clio for me,but if i had 5k then i would buy a rx7 but as you want somethink cheapish to run then that would be no good for you.
