But my dad just bought him self a laptop and wants to access the Internet and it needs to be wireless, so he wants me to buy the stuff for him but I haven't got a clue :panic:

So can anyone tell me what I need to buy, and it would be better if you can supply me Ebay links too

Thanks man, have some rep :y:

One last question, can I plug in my Thompson speed touch modem into the router at the same time as someone is browsing the net on the laptop?

i've got that router pretty good:y: you won't be able to plug your other modem into the router.

You wont need a modem if you have a router :S

You wont need a modem if you have a router :S

Only if the router has a modem inbuilt. No modem = no internet ;)

Currently Meiran, your modem is plugged directly into your PC.

Buying a wireless modem/router combo device will have its own power plug & sit separately to your PC, thus you can switch your PC off & the modem will remain on.

The modem router now has your telephone line plugged into it (which it uses for your net connection) so the modem plugged into your PC is now redundant - put it in the cupboard.
Now your modem (and internet) will remain "always on" So your dads laptop can have internet access regardless of the state of your PC.

Your PC however is now without the internet because its not conected to the modem. For this you have 2 options.
# Connect your PC to the modem router using an ethernet cable (theres a slim chance you might need to buy a network card for your PC, but if your PC was built this century it should have one built into the motherboard. In all likelihood the network port will be next to your USB ports round the back of your PC)
# 2nd option is to buy a wireless network card for your PC saving any messy wires running around the room/house!

Sorry if that sounded too patronising or lengthy, just trying to give you a clear description of what happens! :)
