got stopped last night an was fined £30 for my exhaust.
got charged for a regulation 54(2)

regulation 54(2) states
"every exhaust system and silencer shall be maintained in a good and efficient working order and shall not, after the date of manufacture, be altred so as to increase the noise made by the escape of gases"

was basicly told if it makes more noise than a standard saxo with the same engine then it's illegal. so there's no point wasting money on aftermarket exhausts.
anyone else ever heard about this in their area?

is there not just a noise limit in general for every car class an if there is anyone know what it is?

I know when i owned my last car, the MOT testers almost failed it because my exhaust system was too loud. But they let it through for me. Dunno if there are any proper regulations.

I thought the leagl limit was 96DB. But Ive done some research and found the following thread discussion:

http://www.maxpower.co.uk/wwf/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14

Theres an insert from the ministry of transports website and apparently its only 74DB???

If I was you I would have asked for them to do a DB test on the exhaust and out right refused to do anything else. You have to sign the fine dont you? You sholdnt have. You would have been well within your rights not to until they had proof it was too noisy.

I got pulled once and he was talking to me about it, he said its a bit of a grey area. He said to me that as long as it isn't stupidily loud, its ok. He was probably the first sound copper i have ever spoke to, Was telling me how he had his first sapphire cosworth when he was 20, and now drives a civic type R!
