After some t**t crashed into my 1.2 sxi corsa b the other night when it was parked up, its pushed me over the edge into buying a new car. Ive wanted a new car for a while, but this was the final straw to make me look for one. Ive been looking at various options, pug 106 gti, toyota starlet glanza v, and ofc saxo vts :) Im just wondering what you guys think of your vts, is it a suitable option for a 19year old? All opionions welcome guys!

Theyre quick, handle very very well and have half decent fuel economy if you dont floor it everywhere.

The main downside mate is that if you crash one its gonna be a write off 9/10.

The GTi is exactly the same basically it just looks different and technically should handle very slightly better due to a bigger ARB. Both can be tuned for small powergains for little money but it costs a lot to get decent gains from em.

Theres a lot of em about tho so you can get some bargains.

The Glanza is the quickest of the lot, but because its turbo'd and an import the insurance can be a bit mental and the parts can be hard and expensive to come buy. Theyre extremly tuneable tho.

Great post. Is it usual for a 19 year old to have a vts, or will the insurance company just bang up my previous thinking "boy racer"? Im under my mums name atm earning named ncb. If I got a saxo, probably just tune it with an enclosed induction kit, cams, 4 2 1 mani, catback system and a remap to see a nice bhp gain.

i was 19 when i got my VTS and have never looked back... apart from the constant random lights flashing on the dashboard, things breaking, squeeking, rattling etc

one good thing though is you learn alot about cars as you spend so much time fixing the bloody thing! :)

Its not uncommon, prob the age most people get one actually now theyre cheap. It will be expensive to insure though yeah cus the engine is very capable. Although its only 22 brake more than a VTR the engines a completely different setup and its got a lot pof power all the way through the rev range.

You should be able to get a sub 2k insurance quote, but i doubt many companys will insure you on a VTS under your mums name mate and they certainly wont insure those mods if you plan to decalre em.

Your best bet id to get your own policy now ur 19

vts is where it is at mate every 106 i raced i beat! i raced a starlet the other night down a dual carriage wayi was right up its arse and it ran out off steam at 120 and it pulled over and i shot by p.s by vts you will love it

to be fair if the driver was any good and the car was in decent condition it should have had you in a straight line. Im not sure what the stats are on paper but the glanza is a very quick car in a straight line its def a VTS killa

Great post. Is it usual for a 19 year old to have a vts, or will the insurance company just bang up my previous thinking "boy racer"? Im under my mums name atm earning named ncb. i think you might have a slight problem here man...

1) as a named driver your NCB (if you're entitled to any) will only count towards your current insurer (which means they can charge virtually whatever they want - i.e. its a bit of con in medium to long term)

2) the insurance company will charge a bomb for the Cams and other mods on top. Its going to be very very expensive.

If you can afford it then go for it... but its going to be a quite an expensive car for you i can imagine... :)

Yeh, i was planning on taking out my own insurance with the same insurance company - using my named ncb. Ill just have to give em a ring and see what they say :P

Whatever you do really itll be insanely expensive on insurance for the first year.

but

you'll love the driving experience and if you respect the car and you drive sensibly you'll enjoy driving it and the feel of the power instead of mullering it into a tree

After the first years out the way and you've bit the bullet your insurance will soon drop after that :y:

Post up your quote dude

would also be interesting to see what you get from other insurers with 0 NCB.

how many years named ncb do you have out of interest?

Vinny_VSX
23rd October 2007, 21:43
Nope. A VTS is for me. Let me explain, my name is vince and the VTS stands for Vince's Tasty Saxo. Well I wish it did stand for that :).

Anyways buddy, a VTS at 19 is pretty damn sweet. Reliabilty wise, they are pretty much bullet proof if you let them warm up before any kind of abuse and just general servicing really. Good luck for the new car search anyways :)

Another thing, 'Named NCB' dont exist. Its a clever marketin ploy that a lot of the insurers are using now after direct line started using it.

If you think theyre giving you discount for staying with them youll assume it will be cheaper than anywhere else. Where actually it will probably be a higher quote on renewal than if you just get a fresh policy with the same company.

Amd imo NCB dont even make that much difference its mainly about the years of driving experience unless you have 5yrs ncb

In got insured on my vts at 19 with 0ncb and i payed 1100 with elephant!
I dont agree with the glanza being quicker as iv come across the older starlet gt and i have never really had trouble seeing them off and if i recall the glanza is lower due to more weight!

Get a vts if you like cheap power as people always think there vtrs etc but youl always have the stigma of boy racers etc.

106 gti i think personally look better but youl have to pay more to buy them plus there not as chavish as the saxo!

I like the glanza but youl struggle to get insured unless its the older starlet gt and they are quick an very tunable same as the saxo and 106,the glanza are really expensive tho 4k plus!

b0t13
24th October 2007, 22:53
glanza is quicker in a straight line but nowhere near as good round a bend,

this is the dilema im having atm, i can buy and insure a vts when my renewal is due but i want something new, had my saxo 2 years nearlly and its getting boring tbh... and i cnt see the thrill of vts power lasting long, hense the move to a glanza, but everything about the glanza is twice the price which is crap..

vtsnutter
24th October 2007, 23:19
iv personally never had trouble with a glanza? thier driver error maybe! my mate has a 1995 starlet gt and he can sort of keep with my 154bhp vts! but he only has a induction kit and decat. i like the glanzas better but if i remember parts are expensive etc and my mate one does eat abit of petrol for a 1.3 espically on high boost.I was going to get one instead of the vts but there getting to popular now and there loosing there street sleeper now as everyone knows what they are! when you used to see one it was like wtf is that now its just o its a starlet!lol! same as a saxo!

Its harder when you want to move on from a tuned vts?

b0t13

glanzas are amazing for tuning potential whereas a vts is pretty crap unless u spend silly amount of money on it..

i got quoted for a vts £1465, that was on gocomare.com

vtr i got quoted £965, im liking the vtr to be honest, i know they are crap compared to vts (in reality) but they are nippy enough to take over something, can get to about 120mph (never tried, dont plan on to either) so its more than capable of what i need.

id say mate, go for what ya heart says, both cars you have said will hammer you for insurance, but will it be worth it......id say so :y:

btw, if i was in your situation, it be a vts, love saxo's to much at the moment lol

vts ftw definatly matey saxo is the best lookin car and i dont realy think it will kill u that much on insurance. suble modifications will make it stand out from the crowd and u will be happy with it at the end of the day.

the fact yours is im guessing cammed makes it a bit unfair lol. Standard for standard the glanza is a quicker car in a stright line.

Look into the insurance costs before making any decitions mate, i'm 19 with 1 years no claims and i'm paying £1300 fully comp for my VTR and some of the mainstreem insurers such as direct line and norwich union wouldn't insure me

I have no ncb, been driving 3+ yrs, was on my parents. Because of bad cred i really had to search for a insurance comp to take me on. I pay over £1000 now just for a vtr. Im 21.

TU-Tuning

yea pass plus only counts for the first year you insure your car on your own policy
