Firstly, I've done a few searches and not found a great deal
Ok...as title really, what are common issues to look out for when buying etc? What mileage would you say is the max you'd buy one on with full service etc?
Cheers!

Gearboxes, smoke on start up etc.. the usual basically.. check history for when cambelt was done etc and general service items and dates...

head gaskets are a nightmare on them make sure if it hasn't been changed that you really do check it proper. my 1st gti i bought running sweet 2 hours later mayo time! also dont go for one over 100k if you can help it, make sure cambelt has been done and gearboxes are another common one.
thats why i paid over the odds a bit for mine, but 60k one owner i got over £8000 receipts with her for head gasket, coilpack, gearbox, engine rebuild etc etc and it was completely standard!

low 20 to 40 thousand miles is what i would be looking for don't buy one with 100k on the clock unless it's been well looked aftered and has had the headgasket and cambelt done, check service history, mot's and ask for a test drive so you know how the owner has been driving it.

For some reason all 106 gti's ALL have over 60k on, been looking for 2 weeks proper now and only the saxo vts' have lowish mileage! Not too sure why!

^^^ thats why im selling mine not lowered, had it booked it etc for sat but would rather give people the choice to make, maybe 60mm is not practical for them lol....but 20-40k is a dream you'll be hard pushed tbh or spending ridiculous amounts, vts's have less miles on them cuz they aint as much fun to drive and break down more ;) non biased opinion of course ;)

not sure on the numbers exactly, but iirc insurance was higher and 106's were a little bit more expensive to buy new (only few hundred quid) and people got caught up in the saxo craze, and with free insurance for a year when bought new the saxo was the most common choice, i spent 6 months looking for mine but it had 60k on it but all of this from peugeot main dealer lol

Nah mate I thought 106 GTi's were cheaper to insure that's why Pug fucked with the stats and made them 8.6 0-60 officially when they're the same as the VTS?

i was told by NU that vts is 13 gti 14 but since being on here i've heard otherwise, but its cheaper for me 2 insure a vts than my gti but that could be down to personal circs etc...ID go for 106 personally, they are less common e.g im the only person in my town with a GTi, altho theres literally sh*t loads of vtr's and vts's

If I was to buy another saxo/106 id check the following
Axle for play in bushes – an expensive fix
Gearbox for synchro wear and how tight it feels
Radiator – they all need changing after a while
Any warning lights – abs is common
Clutch for slippage
Any signs of it being modified – would suggest a hard life
Service history is important
Any nocks or squeaks rattles or smoke
Can’t think of any more main things atm
