depends on what your budget is really...

canon is usually a good make to go for. think they are the leading company in cameras, however some other campanies make some good ones, e.g Nikon

and my samsung GX10 is a damn good camera too.

my advice, wait for someone who knows what theyre talking aobut to post.. lol

in my opinon you cant really go wrong with a canon, dont get me wrong you can still get good shots with nikons and fuji DSLRs but i just prefer using the canon, the layout for the setting is much more simple and easy to use.

recommending one would really depend on your budget, remember though that its not all about what megapixel it is, there other factors like the quality of the metering, how good the processor chip is, what quality lens you have, what the build quality is like etc.

in terms of cameras canon have three main production lines.

300d, 350d, 400d are essentially entry level dslrs and retail around the £500 mark on first release

the 10d, 20d, 30d and 40d are amateur / semi pro and would retail around the £1000 mark on first release and they benefit from a magnesium body rather than a plastic one like the entry level dslr

then there are the pro series which is the Eos 5d and 1d
expect to pay atleast £2000 +

no worries mate, you may want to look at getting a slight older semi pro model than a newer entry level one

canon good - yes.
kit lens good - not the best, but a good starter.

i have a 30D and love it, espec with my 70-200 IS L lens.

i prefer canons because the layout seems nicer, and the senseors seem better at high iso readings

personally id try n get a 30D rather than a 400d. i dont like the feel of the 400d and the size, 30D feels alot more robust.

I'll keep an eye on this as I was looking at the 400d. I like the looks of the 30D so i may stretch myself to the 40d if funds allow :y:

Prefer the 20/30/40Ds over the 300/350/400D series.

The plastic body to me i dont like, nor do i like the layout of the two screens on the back of the 350 etc... had planned on getting a 350d as my back up ages back, but intend on getting a 40D and using 30D as a back up.

400d is a newer model but part of the cheaper seies, 40D is better than both obviously.

i just dont like plastic small bodies.

second that, thats why i got a 10d over a 350d when i was buying it 2 1/2 years ago. next will probably be a 40d

I had a 10D, the wife has a 300D, and I now have a 30D, and they are properly good cameras!

Depends on which features you need, 30D/40D etc have more advanced features than the 300/350/400D!

Enjoy the Canon whichever you get, I have always been a Canon person!

the 10/20/30D are largely better than their lesser 300/350/400D models but price difference new makes it logical to go for the cheaper model until you know for certain what you want out of your photography.

firstly I urge you to try the models before buying so you can get a feel for the difference between the models and whether the extra features and build quality is worth the price difference. Secondly, look at 2nd hand models... the prices can still be quite high but atleast you can make some savings, get some practice before committing big money to a more permanent, versitile photographic device.

you may find that the associated costs of an SLR are not the sort of thing you a willing to accept, or that the versatility of an SLR is unnecessary. Either way buying 2nd hand should help you make up your mind.
