Bought the car 2 months ago and the wheel bearing was shot, so i replaced both the fronts... £90

Then it started banging, so i replaced drivers side wishbone...£95

Then the tyre wore on the inside... £45

Got it tracked... £25

Now its started knocking....

And.....

Each wheel has Inches of play, both "left to right" and "up and down"!

BOTH the hubs are knackered, as are BOTH the driveshafts, as are BOTH the wishbones, as is offside SHOCK!!!!

BIG MONEY!!!!! And after only 55000 miles!!! Maybe £300-£400! Maybe more!

Not to mention the INCOVENIENCE!!!

In a word... SHIT!:n:

That's nothing compared to the amount that I've spent on maintanence alone in the past 2 years. Last time I checked it was just about to go over 3 grand and that is before I had to spend another 350 quid to get it through it's last MOT.

It now needs another new driveshaft, gearbox refurb and wheel bearing.

Think yourself lucky boy ;)

Well my car has been good as gold. Its done 132k and i had to replace headgasket at about 119k, driveshaft and wishbone the odd service bits (leads, plugs, oil filter etc), other than that its been a good little car. I'd certainly have another

Vtr's get thrashed. When I got mine she had to get 2 wheelbearings done, a wishbone, a driveshaft, cambelt change, tracking, a new exhaust system and still needs a new clutch. :/

Running sweet now though :P

What do you class as "looking after it"?
Spending £400 on the front end??

yeah, try to learn to do things yourself if you're not already. Driveshafts and balljoints go all the time and it's useful to learn to replace them yourself as you can save alot of money in the long run :y:

I've had my vts for just over a year and its had a new gearbox and clutch, some gear linkage thing, and a driveshaft again!!

Saxo's just arnt reliable

123k here, no major problems, not even headgasket change, touch wood.

MaRiO89
30th October 2007, 16:00
Tbh they are all owned by boy racers at somepoint, especially the sporty models and those types of people just dont service them regularly or take any care of the car at all..They might wash it but thats about it..

My mums westy has never ever gone wrong..

Thats now just on 99k and she's had it from near enough new..

tbh im starting to think buyin from women is a bad idea, they know fuck all about cars and run them to the ground whilst getting ripped of by garages..

martinsaxoblue
30th October 2007, 16:52
If you look after a car, service it reguarly and dont thrash it esp from cold you shouldnt have any major problems. All Saxos from new will have the same chance of fucking up later on in their life, what will cause that is how its driven and taken care of. Its a game of luck when you buy any car to how its been looked after, but saxos are often driven by boy racers and so have a bigger chance of being fucked.

Remember in a old motoring show, they said don't buy off an old women because it would never have been put into 5th gear in it's life as they don't go above 30mph.

i've owned my vts since january and not had any problems what so ever *touch wood*.

has had 2 previous owners, one lady but not old so was driven fine, the the second was a young couple who had 2 show cars and found it a bit expensive having a vts on top, so was loved as much as there show cars.

i got me a winner!!

as always cars are only as reliable as there owners

non of the things you listed could have happened it two months , so why didnt you pick up on them when you bought it , the car must have been shagged when you paid for it , and 1 women owner , it was prob her name on the V5 , but her son was caning it every night without a care in the world

i got my VTS when it was 2y9m old , it belonged to a 40 year old man , but i still gave it a good check over before parting with any cash

Baz
2nd November 2007, 14:36
well mine is on 35k (13k which i have done) and in 13 months ive owned it ive bought a battery, centre section, rear drums and a wheel bearing....amount of owners or women owners means nothing tbh IMO. think im the 4th owner now on my car

Scattle
2nd November 2007, 14:38
Only major thing I have had is a rear axle and centre section, on an 11 year old car with 123k on it.

totally agree mate it took me ages to find a nice one that i brought from dave roberts at abp and to be honest its been a good car all i have had to do is service it stick some tyres on and a strut top spot on:y:

2nd November 2007, 22:59
i have only had one serious problem and that was when my bro borrowed my car and ended up parking it shit which in return had a wing mirror snapped off LOL.

oh and had to reset my ecu (via taking battery off for 15mins).

as snewham said its best if you learn about your car and do stuff yourself.so far i know its not much but i have done

upper strut and lower strut brace fitted
full oil change
bleeding of the coolant and refill etc etc
refitting discs and pads all around
fitted my bonnet
changing headgasket seals (which tbh did not need to be done for ages i just feel better it has new ones on)
fitted my bumper myself and rear diffuser
sprayed it all myself aswell.
fitted my b&m
fitted my de-cat and my backbox

other things i still need to do

fit 4-2-1 manifold (when it arrives)
fit remus center section
change my steering wheel around (again lol)
fit new fog lights (once they arrive from john)
il be fitting my full suspension kit aswell when i get it.

so all as i said that list aint really huge but imagine how much i have saved from not having to pay a garage for labour hmm.

the idea is to maintain your car as mush as possible!!! before i take my car out i always let the engine run for about 5 mins just so it warms up a little bit.i dont thrash it no point at all tbh.i always check my oil, washerjet, coolant levels even the silly daft things as make sure all the lights are working and indicators are working and that stuff is commen sence and low maintance LOL.stuff you get told about in your driving lessons lmao.

2nd November 2007, 23:12
i kind of know what you mean but when its running right you cant help but love it.

mines on 78k owned it for 14 months on 70k and had so far replaced:

both front wheel bearings
both front driveshafts
one engine mount
discs and pads all round
cat back exhaust system replaced due to standard one falling off
servicing and cleaning

not to bad really, dont give up!

what a load of balls mine has done 118'000 miles ive had it 2yrs and it has never broke down. yeah ive replaced some parts but thats what owning an old car is all about.
at the end of the day things brake its just life.....

Sounds like the garage you go to is ripping you off.

If you fit new wheel bearing you should be able to tell if the hubs are ok or not. Sounds like they fucked your hubs when fitting the new bearings. Also they over charged.

Wheels should always be tracked after fitting wishbone. Also you should not pay anywhere near that for a wishbone.

It sounds like its not your car but more you have a really poorly looked after car.

You have been skanked pure and simple

3rd November 2007, 11:54
Good thing with spending the money on it - you know its done so won't need doing again - if looked after, alot of people seem to think they are shit cars, the previous owner might of ragged the pants out of it hence it not being great, mine doesn't seem bad, no problems yet, hence why i'm buying another.

mines been good as gold, ive had 2 replace the passengers side drive side, only 50 quid, fitted myself, nd wen i got the car i changed cambelt fanbelt, oil filter sparks etc, and recently flew through the mot so touch wood its been good :P

hellonpluto
4th November 2007, 12:04
Not many problems with mine.

All i've had is...

New radiator (considering age understandable)
New battery (only had 37k miles on it when i bought it last year - 7.5 years old)
New brake lines going to the back brakes
New cambelt (it was time to get it done 60k miles)

Thats it.

I've had a Desire 1.1 for 11 months now (my first car). Good nick, low mileage, not been razzed to death and all that. It's been reliable apart from the exhaust falling off after 7 weeks, and failing it's MOT because of a stop light going off when braking..

So you come on a site set up for Saxo enthusiasts and tell us not to buy Saxo's?

Doesn't really make sense does it?

In the 2 and a bit years I've had saxos I had a coilpack go on my first one. £40 quid brand new. And I bought my VTS knowing it needed a new wheel bearing. Did the droplinks and track-rod ends whilst I was there and think it cost me £40 aswell.

Everything else has been spent on maintenance/mods.

Got mine on 108k and needed a HG within weeks
Did cambelt and fanbelt at same time for good measure and obviously changed coolant and oil and oil filter at same time as well as plugs (late january)
Release bearing went 2 days after getting head done
Replaced n/s track rod end and need to replace the track rod
got 4 new tyres
o/s driveshaft has started knocking but cba to replace as they are expensive apparantly
oh yeah and i am starting to get some crankcase compression VERY BAD TIMES as I can not rebuild my engine and I cant afford to get another engine
