I am assuming your talking 80mm from a VTS ride height and that you want coil overs as no off the shelf springs go that low. 80mm down you will be on your bump stops any way. Not to mention a car 80mm down will never handle well. So I assume the car is purely for show. If this is so you can just cut coils of your springs. To stop the spring from unseating you can drill a small hole in your spring pans and used wire to hold the springs in place.

You can also just mill down a damper shaft so that it is short enough. Incidentally you are best getting some say 60mm off the shelf lowering springs and then cutting a few of the widely spaced coils off. This is as these springs tend to be a lot harder than stock ones and are progressively wound to stay seated.

I would warn you though that cars this low do handle very poorly. Even at normal road speeds they can be very unsafe. But as long as you know what your car can and cannot do they can still be driven on the road safely. I know plenty of people that have such impractical cars that they will never see more than 30mph. Not my thing at all and something I would never do but everyone to there own.

ok ye fair point but i feel that thats a bit of a bodge way of doing things, id rather just save up for the coilies. its only a 1.1 and it will never go that quick but i dont drive like a nob (in my eyes lol) because it will never be finished for a while so either the handling wont be spot on untill iv got my tyres for the new wheels or the sus is done, things like that. but cheers for the info bcuz i never knew you could do that.

is there any other brands that do coilies for the sax as i cant find anyothers apart from FK and cheap-shite .ltd...

cheers

Cut springs = MOT failure

I have heard a lot of bad things about cut springs. Its something that i wouldn't do.

Axracing said IF its a show only car cut the springs..

Show only meaning that it never really gets driven..

Oh yeah. Didn't read it properly, suppose it would be ok for a show car then. :y:

;)

It would indeed..

fuck that, i wouldnt wanna drive a car with cut springs no matter what its for, stupid advice,, people will do anything to save money nowadays, risking their life for an extra 20mm lowering or the price of some 60mm springs..pathetic.

Not true at all. After all even stock springs are cut to size.

if they are cut so much that they come out of the spring pans when the suspension is desended then that is an MOT failier - I think I recall that correctly

Thanks James. That’s exactly what I was trying to say.

possibly death as well.

Any Saxo lowered 80mm will be relatively unsafe to drive on the road at even normal road speeds. My point was that if you’re willing to compromise in this way cutting the springs is not that much more of a compromise when you really think about it.

Very true. That is why you have to tether the springs or shorten the dampers when going very low.

You can say that about even lowering the car just 60mm. A Saxo lowered 60mm will be a lot less predictable than a car lowered say 30mm. Even more so if its wet or frosty. Yet people do it because it “looks good” Standard cars are the way they are because there intended to be easy and safe to drive. Why modify a car at all?

I think going down 60 is a lot safer than cutting springs ! Maybe not the best for handling but it isnt deemed 'unsafe' where as cutting springs is basically !

No probs..

I still dont think people are understanding what you mean though..

For people who are saying its dangerous etc i repeat again that he only said do this if the car is a show ONLY car, as in it never gets driven..

heh I suppose cars that cover 0 miles a year don't crash very often.

On a show car though you'd want trick suspension .. air bags and perhaps a heavy sprinkling of 6x9s or something equally shiite. Chopped springs just don't cut it these days (excuse the bad pun)

MaRiO89

LOL..heavy sprinkling of 6x9's..hahaha

Hopcraft

didnt even realise there were 'cars' that do no miles, if so cut the springs all you want.

but at the end the of the day, this car does do mileage, therefore i would not cut springs !

the cheap coilovers and dampers use cheap components and ride quality and performance suffer as a result.

We had a set of raceland coilovers for the polo in for testing - costing about £150 lol. My review of them consists of a four letter word beginning with s and ending in t
