Just bought our first house with the mrs... move in on Thursday!!! Bad news is any future plans on car have gone out the window as mortgage re-payments are a killer. And the best bit... on every pound we've borrowed we pay back £3.15... so our £95,000 mortgage will cost us in total £299,250.00. Now hows about that for some serious lube'less anal shafting!

were paying off the interest plus the mortgage repayment which they both work out to be about £587 a month. fixed rate at 6.79% i think. the thing is 3 months ago when we got our first mortgage quote the rate was 5.11%, so in 3 months with raising interest rates its gone up to 6.79% and higher. im 26 and broke!

Do what I do and pay off more each month than the minimum. It's amazing how much you can save and how much quicker you can pay off your mortgage by paying a little extra each month

The reason that the repaid total is so high is due to the length of the mortgage term.

We paid £130k for our house a few years ago, got about 18 years left on the Mortgage and when it's up for renewal next year we're hoping to get the term down to 15 years.
In the few years we've owned the house we've already made almost £40K on it and we've not done half the work we want to do! Just goes to show even though house prices are stooooopid at the mo you can still buy a house and cleverly make money on it in a short period

thats true, but we took the max term to lower our monthly repayments. the idea is to build equity in the house, remortgage and use the cashback service that some banks give when remortgaging and provide a higher deposit so we dont have to loan so much for our next house... which will be the house when we decide on a family. for now we wanted to pay as little as pos for a few years so we can have our own time, then when its time to move use whats built up in the house and remortgage. thats the plan anyway...

It's expensive mate, but do what Craig has done.
A lad I work with, took about a 15 year mortgage on a £110k and he has already paid off 40k in 3 years, so basically that house will be paid off in 4 years.

Me and Audz_VTR bought our first house last year, 2 bedroom Mid Terraced house for £84,000, since then the prices have just shot up and keep going up.
We got a fixed rate mortgage for 5 years, think the rate was 5.25 and that was with Halifax, they were the only ones that would give us around 4 times our joint income.
All i can say is it is a million times better than living at home, just wish your mum could still do all the washing and tidying up :panic:
