* In wet conditions it took a typical mid range car 91m to stop from 70mph with 3mm of tread. In the same car with 1.6mm of tread it took 135m to stop - 50% further. Auto Express tests June 2006.

*

In the same test, at the point where the 3mm car stopped, the 1.6mm car was still travelling at 50mph. Auto Express tests June 2006
*

The cost of replacing your tyres earlier would add just £20 a year on average to the cost of motoring, that’s just 39 pence per week. Continental Tyres 2006
*

Your tyres are the only contact your vehicle has with the road. At 1.6mm of tread depth your tyres are only 55% effective compared to new. This means your brakes are also only 55% effective. Tests by Continental at MIRA 2004
*

During its life the average tyre will rotate more than 26 million times. It could cover 30,000 miles which is more than once around the world. The circumference of the earth is 24,902 miles at the equator. Continental Tyres 2006

So i could have drove round the world 3 times if it was "possible!"

Interesting information that.

My tyres are all ok - all got loads of tread left on them, but new tyres may be on the books for early next year :)

quite scary the fact that tyres with 1.6mm of tread takes that extra 50% longer to stop :O
