Have you got any Anti Freeze in your water? If not this could be a potential problem. Also might have been your thermostat jammed shut. Or just air in the system

If you don't mind your engine being eaten by water or the water in your cooling system freezing then I personally wouldn't worry about anti-freeze esp at this time of year. However if you have an ounce of care for your car and dont want to be shelling out for a new engine in a day, a week, a month? I suggest putting some anti freeze in.

well... i care for my car but not about to jump into bed with it! have topped up engine with anti freeze so my relationship with car wont come to a premature end... another happy ending! :luff:

all the antifreeze does is stops the water freezing up in the engine stopping cracks and things in the block. Also does the oposite as it stop the engine from getting too hot hence anti freeze/coolant. Good job you have some in there now though

also stops the water corroding the internals of the engine

head gasket mate

That will probably be the most helpful post in this thread….

The chances that the headgaskets gone are high. If it hasn’t gone already, the temp lights already been on so the heads probably warped and it won’t be long before it goes…

And signs of any leaks? If not then the only way an air pocket can get into the coolant is through the headgasket.

What’s the oil like? Any signs of mayonnaise? Any white smoke out the back?

The antifreeze is mainly there to stop it freezing, hence the name… for maximum protection use it neat. It will say on the bottle what ratio to mix it… usually 1:1 will protect to temperatures that we will never get in the UK so you’re just wasting it…

I've feared my headgasket has been going for a while as car used to get really hot. I then changed radiator and had a new thermostat and now when it goes up to 3/4 and just over, it drops down to half and hovers around there. Oil looks fine, no white smoke and had a mechanic do that gas test thing where it changes the colour of this liquid stuff but that was ok as well. I have got an oil leak onj engine but cant work out where its coming out from. Its not serious just a drop everynow and then.
