Play in input shaft, excessively "dry" feel or grinding (put it in each gear and check)

Take out drain plug and see how much of a metal hedgehog there is, bet its fucking MASSIVE.

Ok for us that aint so good with gearboxes ;) Could you explain where i would find these and how to do it further. Do you reckon the box will be ok? Or is it just luck?

Do you get to drive it in a car? if so its the normal rattles leaks and all that. when they take it off look at the colour of the oil. If its like tar just walk away. Really if there is any problem there not worth getting. How high is high mile? When you say S1 are you talking S1 rallye? If so check that it is what they say it is.

much it costing?

The input shaft is the bit that runs into the clutch, inside the bellhousing.

Out of the car it would just be a look at the box code. I forget what the box codes are. There was a list on SSC some time ago so a search may shed something up

Mine had done 100k when I got it. First thing I noticed was the gearstick went all floppy (side to side) once it was installed. I also noticed a whistle in 3rd, but that doesn't seem to be so bad now. I get a small crunch going into 3rd most of the time. A get a knock going into 2nd when it's dead cold. If I try to change into 2nd from 1st while at 7800 rpm, I get the most almighty bang, it makes you think the box has blown to pieces. I also often have to make several attempts at going into reverse. Finally, when down shifting from 5th to 4th, you have to make sure you pull to the left, otherwise it goes straight down where's there no gear, yet it still goes into place! lol.

Typically means the synchros have taken a doing, but all highmilage boxes except granny boxes will have a bit of a hedgehog. If its pretty substantial though, expect some funky noises :)

I bought mine for £180 i think. had 66k on it. tbh i think your better getting a full rebuild. Would prob need one if its only £100 quid as a tidy one usually costs about £200.

Saves the hassle of putting it in finding out its fecked, then taking it out again and rebuidling it.

I rebuilt mine bearings seals and just the sync rows, and its fine now.

Sync rows are only £10 each i think.
