Evening All,
Basically my Mum has Vauxhall Corsa SXI+ 1.3CDTi on a 56 plate with 3,200 miles on the clock (2k of them been me too). Back in June, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she had the treatment to remove it (August). She couldn't drive for weeks and has only started to get back into it now. However, after Xmas she is having reconstruction done which is a period of 6 months off work and obviously no driving.
The dilemma I have is that she is considering selling the car, she has offered it to me at whatever I sell mine for - so probably £4,000. I know back in January she paid £8,500 with 20 miles on the clock as a pre-reg.
The offer is really tempting don't get me wrong, but things that put me off are the colour is Silver and I prefer black and that it's seems basic compared to Focus. I really love 'Foci' and don't wanna let it go, but I can't decide.

why doesnt she just declare it sorn and leave it on the drive for 6 month??
Luke

She only passed her test last December and she is a VERY nervous driver, so she has lost most confidence and will do even more if it's 6 months.

If you had to pick one, id say the corsa :)

hmmmmmmm, tbh the focus seems for suitable for your kid, thats my opinion on it :)

I agree with pred on that one, the corsa is going back to a supermini again and you will end up wanting more space.

Vauxhall Corsa SXI+ 1.3CDTi sxi is decent spec, cheap to run almost free compared to the focus, probably big enough for a kid, give it a try see how it is.

indeed, you'll cut your running costs in half. cheaper to insure no doubt, cheap on tax too, and the resale value compared to the focus will be much better

could always try before you buy i suppose :)

Id stick with the focus aswel for the above reason. Uve already been back to supermini once with the VTS and decided then that wasnt right for your needs.
Stick with the focus :y:
Luke

The Corsa is smaller obviously, but it's bigger than the Saxo and I have had Ruby in there before now.
Here are the costs of running each cars
Fuel on the Focus £50 a tank, range 290 miles (town driving)
Corsa £40 a tank, range 450 miles (town driving)
Focus is Insurance Group 8
Corsa is Insurance Group 5
Focus VED is £205
Corsa is £115
So yeah, the Corsa is MUCH cheaper to run etc but I don't know if I am to make a mistake to get that and sell Focus?

Well I know what it's like, I have driven 2k+ miles in it.

Cheers mate.
I know what you are saying, the thing that tempts me the most are running costs and resale values.

The corsa is the one i'd go for. Can't say i really see a point in keeping the focus, i've driven a few and not been amazed by them, its just costing you money as far as i can see (unless you truly like how it drives) the money you save could go towards a track car or something like that, if you need some power.
Viper
4th December 2007, 00:42
luke, you just need to decide which is safer for ruby, yet cheap to run at the same time.
from what you have said, the corsa is cheaper to run, so i would be tempted to say the corsa, for that reason. but Foci seems more suitable to have ruby in, although if you can get her in and out of the corsa and are happy with that, go for it!

colour is least of your worries...
check the EURO NCAP ratings between the two cars.
cheapness is good - Im a cheapskate so I'd say go with the corsa

Tough call, but I think the cheap running costs of the corsa would sway me.

Or as your mother is having a tough time, keep the focus, sell the corsa for a true retail price and then use that to treat her.
You get to keep the focus, which you want. Your mother gets a £5k spent on her - quite a holiday to brighten up the recuperation.
Hope all is well with her.

These were my thoughts exactly! :y:
Or as Webby said, sell the focus, use the Cors for a couple of months, then tell your Mum that it's just not the right car for you and the family.... sell it, then buy a decent car like a Golf TDI or something!
Chris :)

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Dump Valves should only be put on high powered Jap beasts!!
Putting them on a small engined Vauxhall is just pathetic and is reducing your power!!
DON'T DO IT!!!

I would choose the car with the higher NCAP rating as it is important to have a safe car for carrying kids about in.

4th December 2007, 14:00
Stick with the focus mate for Ruby, your mum and yourself
And sell the corsa after a bit of usage :y:
Reasons above are all good but in the long run keeping Foci and selling the corsa makes sense :)
Chrichvtr you absolute numpty mate lol...

Can't believe the Corsas are still so expensive, I'd be getting 3 grand off it.
I agree with Vidal, he has the better idea as I couldn't buy it, then sell it to make a profit without giving her the money back as that ain't fair. I'll have to see what she says, I'm only tempted because of the mileage, diesel and that it's one year old.

I could have told you they were lol
Luke
4th December 2007, 18:32
Yeah they are still very expensive, that's why I think it may be best if she sells it privately as basically she is dropping £3,500 if I buy it.

Yeh true enough, maybe shes not intrested in the money though? Just talk to her and see what she really wants to do :)

The corsa seems the better option luke, for running cost etc, all the best for your mum
Luke
4th December 2007, 19:13
Cheers Craig.
I'm going to have a long think about it. It's not I regret the Focus or anything, just thinking of money and resale values that's all.
Craig
4th December 2007, 19:15
i think the focus will drop its value alot faster with the age, the corsa shud hold fairly well with it being so new
Scattle
4th December 2007, 19:16
Imo keep the Focus.
Luke
4th December 2007, 19:18
Another thing with the Corsa is that the CDTi models are VERY sought after and I expect them to be in a few years too.
Something I need to think about seriously..
Luke
5th December 2007, 17:46
Decided to keep the Focus now, as I have been driving the Corsa today and the Focus seems more well built and spacious.
I have told my Mum IF she decides to get rid, to do it privately as she can get a lot of money for it but she says she is going to try and get her confidence back so we shall see.
