View Full Version : VTS's. Any reason to avoid phase 1's? Any big differences?

As title. I'm a n00b on here but considering a VTS as a change from my 1600 16v Corsa Sport. I keep reading lots of horror stories about VTS's but then you read some good ones and people have had trouble free (within reason) motoring :)
Now, I was thinking VTR/VTS but edging towards a newer VTR. However looking around, it's quite plausable I could get a VTS around Rish plate for 1500, from a trader, and it be near mint and bog standard with around 60-70k! Which seems alright providing it's spot on as their adverts tend to state lol.
But, is there any reason I should avoid this idea? Does age wear badly on Saxos despite milage etc? Or should I do without till I can afford as new as possible for any random reason? lol.
Any mechanical differences or just bodywork?
Thanks guys :)

it will be alot better than a corsa mate

It depends how the car has been looked after, that determines mostly how they wear not just mileage/age

Any French car is going to have its share of bad stories mate, but truth is, if you take care of your car, your car will take care of you. I've found my VTS to be super-reliable, as have many on here, although yes the overall quality is not great compared to Germans/Japs, to be expected. Obviously these cars are built to a price, so generally the newer the better, although you can find a 1998 mark 1 thats been kept in top nick better than a mark 2 2003 model that has had the tits shagged off it, if you get me. Shop about, always get the paper work sorted and double checked, get it looked at top and bottom, and you should end up with a minter. A VTR is a superb alrounder and will perform similarly to your Corsa, but a VTS 16v will be a pleasant step up if you can stretch to it.:y:

should be ok if it has been looked after, aslong as you have checked all the car which is for sale and it seems fine i would buy it.

Aye I'm just thinking if I get around 2k for mine (had some good offers) and spend 1500 on a VTS with a couple hundred to get some 2nd hand suspension and exhaust sorted asap and a few hundred for the contingency plan lol I'd be alright.
Buying a phase 2 VTS seems a bit trickier for a GOOD car at a good price, VTR be easier. I'm in 2 minds, PH2 VTR save on tax, fuel, same performance as mine but like everyone says you'd always want a VTS. Insurance wouldn't go up loads and aslong as its as amazingly reliable as my corsa and does 70 miles to a tenner I'd be happy lol.

you`ll notice a big difference in fuel with a vts, but id go for a older vts opposed to a newer vtr

Aye, do prefer the more modern looks of phase twos but cant see the front end from behind the steering wheel can you :)
So owt different then bar the bonnet/wings/lights etc?
Anything I need to look for in particular on phase 1's such as different immobilisors and stuff as I notice like 98+ cars dont seem have that gay key your number in contraption by the gearstick?!

Forgot to say.. I'm doing about 65 miles to a tenner in my Corsa so... not sure what the difference in a VTS would really be.

mk1 vts is the way to go, better body styling in my opinion!

Aye corsa is quite tidy.
Mk1's are the best imo, if they have been looked after and cared for then they will be fine.
Great fun to drive too.

I think thats a myth, although many TU 16v engines, (VTS/GTi 106) have been known to make more than book figures. So occassionally a real minter comes along and makes good figures on the day, and everyone then goes, oh wow, they all make that figure! Example- my 2001 S made 126.3bhp totally standard at fly and 102.8bhp at wheels, plus 114lb ft, at Surrey, although apparently mine was running slightly rich which may have had a small effect on it.

Sooo there's no difference in bhp between the earlier Mk1s like mine...
Compared to ph2 vts's etc??
I love mine and im not selling for a year+ yet :A:
Once the new zorst is fitted and i finish the bodywork she will be shaping up to how i want her to be once finished :)

there's no difference mate, only the older ones have single plug and the phase 2's have a three plug.

True, also that because of this some mark ones respond better to chipping/mapping or so I've heard. I personally don't think it makes any real difference, but I'm sure the ECU experts like Toad/Ryan etc could expand on this..

Just keep looking. Took me bout 3/4 months in the end, but sold my old car, then the same night brought a White P2 VTS, Private Plate, 16's, Lowered on Spax, FSH, 12 Months MOT, 5 Months Tax and 32k. For £2k. Best bit was I brought it off a old couple who've had the car since 2001!!

mark ones look dated and dont hold their money as well as a mark 2...i was on ebay earlier on....would you consider a sundance yellow 106 gti...if your unsure, they are the peugeot version of a saxo vts..sundance is the rarest colour of them, and theres a 2000 with 74,000 buy it now £2000!!
proper bargain!

Yeah it was, still over the moon about it, just lucky I think.
My mate from school works at Pittshill Service Station on St. Michaels Road, Tunstall. Really good and they're quite cheap aswell. Had to take the VTS there for my handbrake adjusted, and there was a faulty valve on the back brakes, it had seized up a long time ago, and new one cost £40 all in.

Not too bad then dude. My missus lives in Burslem so can always doss there till cars done if I use that place (if I have a Saxo lol)
If you hear of any bargain cars on the go locally you'll have let me know :D

apparently early mk1 VTS' used paper headgaskets, mk2's had metal.
easy enough to replace i guess...

i quite like both mk1 and mk2's really:y:

very early vts had a paper head gasket so maybe more prone to going thatn the later multi layered steel gaskets. Not a known problem though

Vouch for what leeroys saying the VTS mk2 with the single plug ECU rocks,
