Evening all!

With my VTS engine virtually complete and ready to fit into the car when the engine bay is sorted i am now in need of a gearbox before i can fit it.

I dont want to fit an ordinary 2nd hand gearbox as you can never really know what you're getting- ie. Has it been abused, crunched into gears, have the syncro's died and has it had oil changed regularly?

Plus itll be a waste doing that with a newly refurbed engine going in.

So, as a brand new gearbox isnt a feesable option i want to know:

Is there anywhere reputable that sells recon boxes with everything changed?

Do they come with a warranty, in the past ive heard people get a 1 year or 10,000mile warranty with theirs but i forget who that person was.

How much should i expect to pay? Ive got roughly 300/400 in my head?

As usual any help/advice appreciated

Some very helpful ones there cheers guys :)

Ill look up some of the places suggested there :)

No way in hell im paying for a new one thats well over a grand, could get a recon one with a quaife diff for that much.

Breakers ones cant be relied on for something like this, even if they seem good at the time you never know if 2 months down the line itll start crunching or bits starting to go on them.

Recon FTW :)

I forget how much my mate said he'd recon a box for you?? but it was much cheaper than anything quoted on this thread up to now i'm fairly sure ;)

vts box you should be able to get for around £100...

Moneys never really an issue, the figure mentioned in the start of the thread is just one that i deemed to be a reasonable price for one.

The key thing im after is some form of warranty with it and a full receipt :y:

we would totally rebuild it for you with new planet wheels, new syncromesh, new bearings and seals,if you have time you can come down actually watch us do it,we are a family run garage business specializing in the repair and overhaul of manual gearboxes, the ma is probally the most common one we do

if you wanted to replace all the syncros from pug/cit there about 500 probaly alot cheaper pater parts tho.

personaly id be very jubious of recon companines even if they do have warrente. think about it all they have to do it by a old box with 80k on it, clean it up and sell it. if it brakes in under a year then just send you another and leave u with the hassle of fitting it all over again.

theres a company on ebay atm selling recon box's, im pretty sure thats all there doin. good little scam tho.

cazer, what can you do about a gearbox with a screwed diff, im assuming the chrown wheel has gone, but its lost all drive?

The thing is your warranty is probs also based on standard power mate...

we can repair your box if it has no drive it is most probally the planet wheels, but on occasions the crownwheel slips from the actual diff as it is only heat shrunk from the factory, dont scrap the box,the only problem we are in hampshire

Massive huge 6 year bump I know, but these threads still come up when searched for.

Just my input, i'm looking at a recon box for my VTS at the moment, and I see people have recommended Cleckheaton. Looks like they are cheap for a reason.

Interesting stuff Luke.

Funnily enough shortly after making this thread I went ahead with the recommendations and specifically asked them to supply a reconditioned VTS gearbox.

It arrived, I fitted, no issues of note with the box itself and drive it for no more than a few thousand miles iirc.

I eventually sold it on when I broke my Saxo for parts. Simon from here bought it and fitted it and soon after took his car on a rolling road day.

It was then apparent that the ratios definitely didn't seen to match a VTS gearbox and instead was almost certainly from a VTR.

Disappointing that they didn't supply exactly what I'd asked for but the box did feel fairly tight & it was obviously clean with seals replaced etc but who knows what internal work if any it actually had.

Service wise there was no issue, it arrived safely at my door very quickly so couldn't grumble at the turn around time.

I am not slagging rebuilt /boxs --but do remember that none of the rebuilders will be fitting anything more than new brgs ,seals and possibly synchro rings
there are no after market suppliers of gears + synchro hubs and from citroen the hubs are apporx £100 for each hub x 3 and selctor forks are £30 each x 3
so bear in mind it is not a direct comparison to a NEW box
