View Full Version : Losing Power/Revs

Rob85
17th December 2007, 16:49
Now and again I lose my revs, usually when Im pulling away. Put foot on revs - nothing happens for 1-2secs then it kicks in. Starting to really worry me. I dont know if its just the cold having an affect on the engine or if its something else. Some people have said to me it could be the air filter but havent said what I can do to check/fix it.

Any help would be great. :y:

Its because ur driving a 1.1.. Common fault.. Foot to floor.. Little power.

How to solve the problem?
Buy a VTR/S

Foot to floor... Vrraaahhhhhrrooom.

I'd say the first thing you want to do is repalce air filter (if standard) and clean out the air intake with carb cleaner

Ok I know nothing about the air filter or cleaning the air intake lol. << noobie So how much am I looking at paying?

Just happened again at a junction, pull up behind a car suddenly it sounds like the engines struggling then cuts out and stalls.....:n:

Might be that not enough fuel is getting to the engine/fuel injectors may need cleaning - Try putting some redex in:y: Like Nick said a new air filter will also help a bit if your one is old.

17th December 2007, 22:48
treid redex use a few bottles over a couple of weeks never changed didnt do nothing

@ rob does it tend to do it more when u have less than half a tank of fuel cos thats wot it is like with mine

Rob85
18th December 2007, 00:50
To be honest it hasnt been over half a tank that often and not for long recently lol. Also though, mine has done that on corners too when taking them in 2nd gear it takes a couple seconds to jump the revs back on. Will enquire about a new air filter but not sure where to enquire around here apart from Citreon which will hurt the wallet haha. :n:

Mines been doing it aswell recently, slam your foot down nothing happens then suddenly you get a rush of power from no where.

1.1's are slow but not in 1st gear there not so nothing to do with them being shit car.

If your stalling at lights etc etc. it sounds like the same problem i had. Are you revs going up and down a lot?

If so i spent 300quid on new parts trying to fix it
Complete service of the car
new idle control valve
lambda sensor
throtle body
on top of many other things i bought and i still couldnt solve the problem. My car was a 1.1i also. In the end i flogged the car off and bought a new car

standed filter from citroen i dont think its much well hoping so

was gunna do it today but i work nights so its hard to get out during the day cos' i'm zzzz land

well if joe had the same prob and that wot he has put down didnt fix it well we know it aint gunna b them

Do the simple cheap things first.
New air filter and clean out the throttle body while you are there.
Also I'd change the plugs and leads too.
Finally a bit of redex in the tank and hopefully that will help/cure the problem

since i have filled my car up, the car has started to struggle and kangaroo all the time in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears and even when you are driving like 70mph in 5th gear. Its worse when you are at a junction and starting from gear one. Any ideas would be greatfulll
Thankyou x

I was talking to a mechanic today about the problems Im having. He said it definately doesnt sound like its the air filter, it sounds like its the idle control if its cutting out when you've stopped. So Im gonna enquire tomorrow about it and try and get someone to look over it.

If I cure the problem, I will let u guys know. :y:

phone a my uncle up whos a mech but lives 220 mile away from me hence why hes not gunna sort it for me but he said he would charge and any decent mech would charge about the same

£45 + vat for a fuel pump to be fitted if i got my own part

personally think that would be the most expensive out of my list

Well I went to a garage and they said come back tomorrow lol.

But spoke to someone else and he thinks it could just need a service and maybe the air filter changing as it is very old and some pipes could be clogging up. :n:

same thing happens to me i think.

its like put the foot down and it starts "chugging" no power/revs...well it goes up and down slightly but u dont go anywhere then it finally kicks in.

Almost crashed cause of this lol, pulled out a junction and was in the middle of the road for ages :n:

is it usually when you have your lights, mainly fogs on as they remove the most amapage from your battery, check your alternators working before you get a battery, this is easily done with a voltmeter. just put it on 12v dc, red pin to live, black to earth and get someone to rev car to about 1500-2000 rpm with fogs and headlights on, this is when alternator is at its optimum, if you see your voltage dropping and not levelling out around 13.4v then your alternator or alternator connections are w*nkered. j

FOUND THIS ON A OLD THREAD OF MINE ABOUT THE SAME THING ANY 1 CARE TO TEST AS I DONT HAVE A VOLTMETER :bored:

sorry no update yet, not got the funds to take it to the garage yet. Good to know about the air filter at Halfords tho. Think the pipes might need cleaning too. Also Ive been told by numerous mechanics that it sounds like the Idle Control System.

put the new air filter in today and it hasnt happen yet but will update when i got less fuel as i have over half a tank at the mo and it tends to do it more when it has less

check resistance of crank position sensor with a multimeter with engine off(look for 300 - 400 ), then voltage with engine at idle (2 - 5 v).

Alright mate, just been talking to my brother seeing if he can help you out (if its the airfilter)

He said if you want he'll be able to fit you a new air filter around 30th december (Thats when we're next in blackpool). You'll have to buy an air filter from halfords but they're really cheap 5 or 10 quid. Or he could get you one and you just pay him the £10 for it when hes there.

Then you can see if that fixes the problem or not.

Let me know ;)

tbh...sounds like you need new HT leads this makes the revs very jumpy happens more in winter for some reason...anyway there £90 from citeron and around £15-20 from a scrappy ...you could also change you spark plugs while your there i doubt its your air filter...
