PS3 60GB discontinued?

Strange one, in Game today in town with the missus doing some uber christmas shopping :err:

As part of that we were to pick up a PS3 for her brother from her mum. So i asked the girl at the counter for a PS3 60GB as my understanding is this is the better one with backwards compatability etc....

Girl said they had none and that they would not be getting anymore in as Sony were not making anymore 60GB, I asked what had replaced it and she said that an 80GB was due out later in teh yer and in the mean time only the 40GB would be available.

At this point i had been shopping for 4 hours, we both had two hands fill of christmas bags and i was not in the mood for spending a single second longer shopping and this was the last gift. So i took a 40GB ps3 and two games and did one back home to some warmth.

Was the girl in the shopping talking shit? If she was then ill be making a call and getting a 60GB PS3 tomorrow i just couldnt be arsed going anywhere else

nope she was telling the truth scott, most stores don't sell them as the 80gb is coming out soon.

Aren't Sony supposed to be removing backwards compatability on the PS3s anyway? I know the 40GB ones dont do it but I heard they were intending on removing the software on the 60&80GB ones aswell.

why would they do that? seems like a bit of a mistake in a buisness sense.

They said it wasn't cost effective and they wanted to concentrate more on new technology rather than playing older games.

Dont know if it's actually happening but thats what I read a couple of months ago.

Robb it was £329.99 that was 40GB plus assassins creed and COD i think. And what Andy is saying about the backwards compatibility was the same as the bird in Game told me yesterday.

I have a 60GB and the ps2 playback isn't all that great anyway. Ure not missin much folks.

i have got a 80gb on order right now paid 350 for it, it apparently uses different programmer which is better for ps3 games. Better quality for ps3 games
