couple of my work mates and i have been talking recently about getting a small hatch back an fixing it up to use for track days etc
the two of them are mechanics and i'd like to get my hands dirty getting to know cars.

the first problem we've hit is just deciding which car to look out for?? :homme:

what do people suggest?

thanks
craigy

205 gti or a 306:y:

Nova, can get loads of parts dirt cheap, probably the best engine choice and weighs knackers all

AX GT, will take most the saxo running gear and engines

Kit car.

How much you looking to spend mate?

If it were me I would go for something cheap and cheerful. From a VTR to a
Nova like above. 205 GTi, even in the 1600 form it would be great once up and
running.

More exotic cars like the 106 Rallyes S1 and S2 also? Even the 205 Rallye?
IMO the lighter the better :p

yeah av been thinking of the little french motors an mr gabbastard is selling a vts engine just now which would go nicely in an AX

one of the mates that is part of this is obsessed with gettin a rs turbo though

id say the 205 Gti aswell. really light and quick.

not really sure how much we'll spend the money will be split between the 3 of us so who knows.

i'll be keeping my car an so will 1 of my mates (other mate doesnt have a license yet lmao)

all i keep mentioning is that we spend a fair bit on the suspension but a fairly nippy engine would be fun

There's always something that's slightly more out of the box like Ford Sierra XR4x4 or mk 2 Fiesta Super Sport
I wouldn't even bother looking for a 205 if budget is part of the equation. They are impossible to get hold of noeadays and parts are becoming increasingly difficult to come by

rushy_23

Sounds like a 205 should be out the question.

The way I look at it, something simple in its construction and cheap to fix..

hmmm might be abit much for us, really just looking for a cheap motor that may need abit of work.

Top 2 cars on there. Generic parts so xheap and readily available.

Sort the suspension and they can keep up with the best of them

I have a mate who is 16 stone and 6ft 4 tall. He had a mini turbo and just replaced the seats with some Cobras with Mini subframes. He managed to fit in easily!

so basically people are thinkin a 205 or an AX (am guessing with a vts engine)

any specific AX to look out for or any other cars that may be worthwhile looking at?

thanks for even more suggestions :y:

got to be a 205 gti

KamRacing
19th December 2007, 09:09
parts are still dead easy to get for the 205 so dont worry about that.
Buy a cheap 1.6 gti with knackered suspension, give it an overhaul with some decent shocks and you could have a track car for well under £2k

Ax would be good. A good friend of mine had a ax vts. Looked awesome.

As a cheap project i reckon your better going along the nova / AX route becuase there cheap & theres so many options for engines / parts etc.

A mini would be awesome because of the presence they have where ever you go not to mention there a pretty good handler! Like Criag said too dont let the name fool you, once you got a set of buckets in there you got all the room in the world ;)

yeah a mini would be a good choice but the price would be abit much and its tryin to get my mates to go for the idea aswell lol

yeah kam pretty sure we could find a 1.6 205 somewhere an if the total price was around what you mentioned then that'd be ok aswell as the price would be split by 3 and its not like we have a deadline so we can build funds up

Raz

the AX not much lighter than the saxo....just a little bit?

track car for track days or for race events??

if its just for track days, i would say, saxo, 106, AX, 205 gti, nova, corsa. you can pick up loads of cheap cars now and track days are cheap and fun.

i would say a S1 106 ralleye, 1.3 motor, 100bhp out the box, light as fook and so much fun ;)

also depends on how much you want to spend?

i would pick a car that you are all interested in, sort out the suspension and brakes first, before messing with the motor. a well setup car can be alot faster and fun around a track than a car with loads of power that handles pants.

if its for race events, you will have to have a close look into the regs for each class and decide what class you want to be in.

KamRacing

nah boz not racing just open track days stuff like that, we realise there is a whole lot of effort, time an money that goes into track racing etc

yeah av told them already all i'm interested in to start with is the suspension lol i want a car that handles great as we could have fun in that even without massive speed.

With a 205 though you have a better choice of engines.

if we did get a 205 you mind answerin any questions we might have?
oh what engines choices is there?

no problems at all with that.

We've built quite a few from a 205 with a cammed Rallye engine in to an 1.8/Gti6 hybrid.
Latest project is kevs destroked Mi16 engine on touring car TBs and other trick stuff.
You've also got the option of putting in the turbo XU engines too if you want boost.

205s are spot on, most track days i have been to have had a fair few 205s there, they are quick as well.

finding a good one, is becoming tricky now.

try looking here in the race section of the classified ads www.pistonheads.com or www.racecarsdirect.com
it may be to your advantage, buying a car that is already sorted for you. i can tell you that its defo not cheap, building a track car. once you have been out there and get the bug, you are always wanting more and more added to the car lol

my two mates are mechanics but i still think some of those engines would be out of there capacity lol but always the option i suppose thanks :y:

ha didnt even know there was a race section on pistonheads.

well hopefully with the price split 3 ways it wont become too pricey for each individual. we've still to talk about setting a budget etc so this idea is still in very early stages tbh

plus i'm looking to buy myself a new car soon aswell lol

doubt we'd be fittin a 306 engine into it, my next car should hopefully have a 306 engine in it so that'll do lol

if i could find a 1.9 205gti i'd be happy just keeping that engine an we would just spend the money on suspenion etc
