went to look at a saxo today nice 52 reg vtr, with exactly 37800 on the clock, when i got home i did that thing where you text the number plate and it tells you all about the car, i was looking through it and it said it had been in a catagory d crash and the the insurance company didnt bother repairing it.
when i was down he was telling me about how the other owner had her front bumper and front wings stolen off her drive and i thought that seems abit wierd,
so who else thinks he was telling porkys? best £3 i ever spent

My friend just bought a cat c damaged focus and didn't know about it. It wasn't until after she bought the car that she did the HPI check so it just goes to show that services like the one you used are pretty ideal when buying a car. Can you post the number you text and what info you have to give just for future reference because in the new year I plan on buying a new car
Thanks

Categories Of Write-Off
An explanation of the categories of write-off are listed below:
Category A A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts.
Category B A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the car should never return to the road.
Category C An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.
Category D A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.
Category F A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair.
Theft These vehicles have not been recovered and ownership rests with the insurer who made the total loss payment. They are able to repossess the car as soon as it is identified, even if it has been bought innocently.
Vehicles categorised as A, B or C require a VIC test before the DVLA will issue a new registration document. This will then be noted on the V5C. See www.dvla.gov.uk for more information on VIC testing.

If I'm honest then I don't pity anyone stupid enough to buy a car without doing a HPI check cos its just asking for it really. Fair do's I did with my first car but only because I knew the guy that I bought the car from and the receipt didn't say sold as seen on.

The reason is they may well have only panel damage but if written off, they are practically worthless should the next owner need to claim on insurance for them. ie, say he bought this saxo, insured it (the insurance company wouldnt even mention its previous history to him) then crashed it or it got nicked. The car has already been a total claim so they would give a very much reduced settlement on it. It stinks but its very much common practise as les honest people could just keep repairing a car for naff all cash, crashing it, claiming £3000 for it and repairing it for buttons, rinse and repeat.

Not at all we had a mondeo which was invloved in an accident not our fault got full value of car which we fully knew was a write off as every car we buy is a write off.
There nothing wrong with the fact the write offs have been in accident at the end of the day its to the standard that they are repaired.

Well said mate
Car get written-off for anything now
imo most people 'try' not to crash because its just such a pain in the asselshcnitz having to go through the claim process and then getting the car repaired after or actually trying to get your cash
