View Full Version : what to do if its a write off?

At the moment, i dont think my car will be a right off, i think its just superficial damage.

but, if it is a right off and the only damaged parts are the bonnet front right wing and bumper? what should i do with it?

it seems an awful waste of a otherwise fine car!
btw, i have no mechanical skills and do not have time to break the car myself.

Help appreciated.

you crash into someone, someone crash into you, you crash it round a track etc. Have you told anyone about it?

someone crashed into me, hit and run, on the road, etc etc.

I am TPFT so there isnt a great deal i can do about it.

But if it is a write off i would like to know what i can do about it, me defining a write of as the cost of repair being as much as the value of the car.

if its a write off you can buy it back and fix it or sell for parts. You'll need to inform your insurance company about it though

I also have no knowledge about mechanics, but i have a few friends that do, do you?

If so you need to weigh up the pros and cons of repairing it either from second hand parts, or new depending on your budget?

Also take into consideration labour costs! like i said any friends/fam that can do or help you do the work?

If it is a write off and you dont want to do it back up sell it for parts
Hopes this makes sense!:y:

tbh fitting body parts is easy just bolts and clips generally

yes, thanks for the help, it does indeed make sense.

Obviously, if hypothetically the costs of repair and parts come to a silly price, one that im not going to pay and i choose to sell it for parts, are there any people that could do it for me? or would it be down to me to break it myself?

DAMAGE SHOTS BELOW, cars worth = £1500, Write off or not???

Well if you dont have anyone who can help you, why not advertise it in its condition and what needs to be done to make it road worthy, and sell it on ebay or take out add in newspaper etc?

Or if that fails a scrappy or a garage? dont think you would get alot for it through a scrappy or a garage though mate? they need to make a profit to :y:

get a picture of the slam panel (where the headlight fights into) But still i don't think that would be over a grand to fix inc spraying. All depends on how much you can pick up parts for, the wing will be hardest to get fairly cheap as there won't be many on ebay and i duno how much it will cost from a scrapyard.

Bonnet - £85
Headlight - £30
Indicator - £8.50
Bumper - £60
Wing - Can't find one on eBay
Slam Panel £37.50

emm, abit annoying really!

Im sincerely hoping that the repair cost will be reasonable!

thanks for your suggestions though. repd.

Yeah will do, its currently at uni, so i shall have to wait until after christmas to have it delivered back home to take pics.

why is the 'slam pannel' you mentioned so significant btw?

Obviously, if its £1000 to get repaired then i wont bother as its only worth £1500 and i want a new car anyway, but i just feel no point in losing money for the sake of it when everything else is ok.
So yeah i might try and see if anyone wants it online or on here.

What does anyone think a reasonable price would be?

90,000 miles, black, T reg, good condition apart from visible damage.

If slam pannel is bent, means write off? :S

From the picture can you see that this is the case?

why does it mean a write off? can it not be repaired/replaced, whats its significance?

I was asking Baz this question, as i didn't think it wrote the car off.

Yeah i'd probably say around there, could be more, depends where you get parts really, and if you can get it sprayed on the cheap. ;)

Baz

I'd maybe suggest strip the whole front end then see if everything is straight, if things need beating back into place etc, thats when it gets expensive!

SNewham
22nd December 2007, 02:08
That's easily over a grands worth of damage. Chassis leg is mashed by the looks of it, will therefore need the chassis straightening, need a new slam panel, bumper, wing, headlight, etc etc. I wouldn't think you'd have much change from £1700 to repair that, there's not much point in bothering.

You wont have to buy anything back from insurance as you can't claim as you are third party and someone hit and run you.

Ross-1987
22nd December 2007, 02:12
If Snewham is right, look down the road of selling it in pieces or as a whole to the highest bidder :y:

Get it checked out first... Before assuming it will cost 1000's..

well we will know soon, im havign a guy goto look at it tmrw, and one after christmas and probably a few more, so we will know, the guy that looked at it was mainstream he said £1500, so im hoping i go more niche/smaller firm then it will be cheaper.

Thanks for all your help!
