Hey

I was driving on motorway today and all of a sudden a ticking noise started by my left wheel. I pulled over as I thought something was rubbing but there nothing there.

When I turn the steering wheel it makes a loud knocking sound.

Is this the cv joint?

Help appreciated!

Thanks

i would say the drive shaft as it seems to be a common problem

could be a drive shaft, when mine was fooked it used to knock around corners putting weight to that side, then just be real light on straights

to find out if its driveshaft, put it on full lock and then pull away and if its creaking/knocking then yeah you need a new one. also jack it up and see if any of the joints/boots are leaking.

if it does that noise on full lock or its leaking then yeah most likely. however, check the wheel bearings havent collapsed because thats how mine are going at the moment and need replacing!

Hi, I had a loud knocking/ticking sound coming from my left front wheel too, it got quicker the faster I went. Turned out that my handbrake cable was loose, the handbrake was still as effective as ever but the cable was rapping against my tyre and that's what was making the noise. If it's this it will cost you nect to nothing to fix, you can prob jack it up and do it yourself if you're mechanically minded!!! Good luck!!

Oh, looking at your post again I think you have two different problems here!!

1) The handbrake cable (rubbing and knocking while in motion, gets quicker the faster you go)

2) The CV joint or the driveshaft (the creaky, knocking noise you get when you turn the wheel, mine does this but only when manouvering slowly) I'm not up on the steering column but I've got a feeling that it could be a problem with something there.

I'd get the handbrake sorted if this is loose but the noise when turning your wheel I'd wait till whatever it is has got really nasty sounding, otherwise you could be replacing a part that has a fair bit of life left in it. When it's TRUELY about to go it will let you know and be unbearably noisy!!
