Hi all! I have been looking at the honda civic type r EK9 model. I was just wondering if anyone on here has got one or know anyone who has one? and there thoughts on them, good/bad points. Also could someone recommend any insurance companys, they are imports so I know that they may be difficult to insure! I'm 18 by the way, but will be going in my dads name. Thanks in advance, Lee.

Your best off waiting as insurance will be silly even under your dads name...thats if they will touch you as iirc its a group 18 and import. Imo the ek9 is by far the best type R they have ever made.

That is illegal mate. It is called fronting and insurance companies are clamping down on it now. If your found out to be the main driver even though the car is insured in your dads name, then I think you can get done for driving with no insurance. Seriously not worth it. A lot of people on here, mainly Vital will use your ass for a jungle drum as it is so stupid.
As for the car, it is fantastic. The only thing to watch out for them is rust around the wheel arches and as they are very quick any sign of over spray or fresh paint should be left alone. As these cars would have seen the wrong side of a hedge a couple of times.
The best thing for you mate at 18 will be to stick with the VTR for another year and then try and insure something like a 172 clio at 19. It is all about getting those valuable no claims :)

pros:
great drivers car
great reliability
great noise
cons:
high insurance
too much for such an old car
parts will be costly
too many shafted / ragged versions
lots have high mileage now and you dont know how well theyve been looked after.

Very good cars, and immensely quick
Insurance will still pull your pants down regardless of whether its in your dads name or not.
Best to wait a few years, but it is a good car to aim for in the long run

high mileage doesn't really matter with a honda engine... as long as it's been looked after

PAH group 20 since when??
more like 15-16,
quite cheap to insure to be honest, i rang a specialist import insurer,
and would you believe it was cheaper to insure a import Type-R than a Uk VTI-S
my quote was 647quid fully comp, thats with one years no claims, 2 years experience, but two claims. not bad i thought and im only 19 not 20 till june.
only problem with them they are still a bit expensive to buy,
have a trawl around the civic sites is best for a bargin, as one im looking at in the new year is a few grand cheaper just because matey is being posted abroad.
nice cars and still the quickest civic you can buy standard :)

No that is not true. In Japan their is a lot more moisture in the air than over here. It is very humid, so any exposed metal will rust much faster than over here. So stick your ha ha up your pipe and smoke it :p

Your best bet is to phone up companies in the back of magazines for insurance matey :)

The Jordan is not an EK9. The Jordan only has approx 160bhp IIRC whereas the EK9 has 185bhp as standard. I very much doubt that your sax is faster than either car unless you've spent a fair bit on mods.

That one above looks amazing. Really wouldnt mind selling the GTI for one of
these still.
Proper drivers car, but will cripple you initially to get your hands on a decent
one fully insured at such a young age. Then you have to consider things like
storage as people who know there stuff will have their eyes on it, security,
even a tracker?
Maintenance wont be cheap, the list goes on. TBH that most of the reasons that
really put me off getting one. Would be a lot easier getting a Jordan and
chucking money at that. Even get the newer Type R and go wild!
If you afford it mate and get a decent one go for it. Such a machine, need to
sit in one at one point to physically see what the fuss is about :p
Certi
27th December 2007, 10:30
I had looked at getting one but wanted a newer car so ended up getting the EP3 instead.
rushy_23
27th December 2007, 10:38
EP3 could easily match its performance with a few bits and bobs here and there.
Only thing is it wont have the wow factor of a reak EK9.. But then again
most people would assume an EK9 is just another old Civic.
Its a shame they dont produce cars like that.
Why not look into a DC2 mate? Much easier to come by.
Certi
27th December 2007, 10:40
The EP3 is pretty much equal to the EK9 in a straight line, it's in the corners where the EK9 would shoot off as it handles alot better.
Hanuman
27th December 2007, 10:43
if there was no such thing as speed limits and it was a legal race to work every morning on public roads then the ek9 would be worth the money it is, but considering they are around £5500 - 9000k for a 10year old car with mileage on it, your far better off spending an extra say grand if not less just to get an 03 type r
rushy_23
27th December 2007, 10:56
Dont actually know that for sure but I agree with the statement Mr Certi!
Me personally Hanuman, if it was no hassle I would definatly go for the EK9
just to use on track/road, and due to the fact that its such a amazing engine (for
a 1.6 16v).
But for ease of life the EP3 wins. Can pick them up everywhere and in great nick
for unbeatable prices!
