i have a nokia N95, had it for about 3 months and tbh im now ready to microwave the frickin pile of sh1te! for the 1st couple of months it was fine, but every now and then it used to say 'insert sim card' after saying 'sim card registration failed'. now it does it at least 4 times a day, and you dont know about it until you take it outta your pocket to see why you havent received any calls/texts, and it says insert sim on the screen (thus missing important calls from mates about meeting at the pub etc...). and also even though it says i have full signal, it sometimes actually hasn't, then receive about 6 messages and 20 missed calls all in 1 go (when i actaully get signal!). ive updated software but still the same. so any way im off 2 take it back tomorrow and get a different phone. i have now lost all faith completely in nokia has my last nokias have always screwed up! any body else having problems with theirs?

Im only experiencing the more common problems due to the vast power of the thing, cant say ive heard about your problem before, when you say you've upgraded the software, do you mean the firmware? if so, what version are you using? (*#0000# - will tell you), ive heard that the new V20 fixes alot of problems but its not out yet on all networks, which means ive got to wait.

its not a bad phone besides all the faults it has, here is my *#0000# result-

Yeah thats the same version as mine, version 20 its supposed to fix alot of the problems, but not all network providers have released it yet, just a daft thing, have you tried cleaning the sim card connections on the phone with a very soft cloth or something?

are you on T-Mobile by any chance? v.20 is out but not for me (t-mobile) they ought 2 get their finger out and sort it!

Yeah im on T-Mobile also mate. These firmware updates come direct from nokia and for some reason not all service providers release them straight away, some may not at all.
The only way to about upgrading the phones firmware is to debrand it, which is something you must do at your own risk beacuse you loose your phones warranty, im still in two minds whether to do that to mine or just simply wait for T-Mobile to release it.

It is bad, your right, but you've also gotta understand that these are very powerfull tools and so unfortunately problems are gonna occur, luckily nokia have got there heads together and come up with upgrades of the phones firmware which resolves alot of the N95's common problems.

yeah when i got the contract, it didnt say anywhere that id have to upgrade the software every month! lmao. what if you dont have internet access? are you supposed to just live with the problems? suppose you could send it off, but then you'll be without a phone! bullsh1t if you ask me!

Only problem I have is same as my N80 used to do, resets itself as I get a text message, and randomly sometimes.

Ive just upgraded the firmware on mine, and fuck me its a shite load better, everything is so much faster....
Battery stability is better
And the camera boot time is now almost instantaneous, along with the delay between taking the photo and the image being processed
and thats just a couple of new features with the new firmware, definately recommend it.
Jacko
30th December 2007, 17:31
how do you go about updating the firmware?
alextoffie
30th December 2007, 18:10
Connect your phone to your PC via the USB cable and PC suite thats included with it... Once its connected and Nokia PC Suite is running it will give you the option to update firmware - do it.
It will scan your phone for whatever version it is and if theres an update available (very likely there is) it will offer you the update - its free.
Takes about 10-20mins from what i remember, but its a piece of piss to do. Mine was slow and had all sorts of little niggles, did a software update and it sorted it all out! Dont forget to save your contacts to the memory card first though - and take it out!!
Jacko
30th December 2007, 18:12
nice one cheers lad.
Andy_S
30th December 2007, 18:17
Make sure you back up your contacts etc because you loose everything.
Also, if your updating an N95, you wont be able to upgrade to V20 like i have, unless you debrand your phone which is something you must do at your own risk but thats the only way of achieving V20 at this moment because service providers wont release it for some reason.
alextoffie
30th December 2007, 18:22
By debrand do you mean basically one thats open to all networks without actually being unlocked? Mines like that... got it from o2 they never brand their phones unless its an actual O2 handset.
Jacko
30th December 2007, 18:25
i have the 8gb. does this make any difference?
Andy_S
30th December 2007, 18:26
No mate, Debranding a phone removes the modified firmware installed by your provider and installs the latest Nokia generic (standard) firmware.
Andy_S
30th December 2007, 18:28
i have the 8gb. does this make any difference?
yes i think so, as i dont think V20 is available on the 8gb version, just try using your software updater and see what it comes up with.
alextoffie
30th December 2007, 18:30
The 8GB one as far as i'm aware you can only get from Vodafone? Correct me if i'm wrong but if thats true then it'll be a Voda branded phone.
Jacko
30th December 2007, 18:31
indeed i am on vodaphone.

I've Got The 8gb One With An O2 Contract....
Andy_S
30th December 2007, 18:37
You can still use your PC suite to find if there are any available updates, so you'll just have to try it.
The thing is, i dont think the 8gb version suffers like the original N95, hence why there might not be an upgrade of firmware to V20.
I'll try and find out and see whats available.

Isnt The Only Difference The Fact That You Get An 8gb Micro Sd Card With It?
Jacko
30th December 2007, 18:39
i find my 8gb runs pretty smooth as it is. ive had none of the problems i read the n95-1 was having.
Jacko
30th December 2007, 18:40
there is no memory card....nor is there a memory card slot. its built in memory
matt151

there is a memory card slot. its for a micro sd card.
Jacko
30th December 2007, 18:44
serious? where is it?
Andy_S
30th December 2007, 18:45
Yeah thats what i thought, that aside, its still worth checking now and again for updates though via your PC suite as they can only make the phone better.
Going back to the original N95, the V20 firmware update also gives you more RAM, so that alone is a good enough reason to do it.
matt151
30th December 2007, 18:46
on the left hand side of the fone at the bottom. its for a micro sd card. did you not get one with yours not even a 1gb card?
Jacko
30th December 2007, 18:47
no there is defo no slot for a card on my handset...
matt151
30th December 2007, 18:47
i'm fairly sure the 8gb version is purely the fact it comes with the card. how big is the internal memory?
matt151
30th December 2007, 18:48
no there is defo no slot for a card on my handset...
how long you had it?
is it purple and silver?
Jacko
30th December 2007, 18:54
lol no mate its black. its the n95 8gb or n95-2.
had it maybe 2 monthes.
matt151
30th December 2007, 18:57
no idea mate mines the n95-1 on the box it came with 8gb card.
Andy_S
30th December 2007, 18:58
The N95 8GB version does not have a slot for a external memory card, its got 8GB internal memory, so therefore you dont need anymore.
Where as the original N95 has less internal memory but has a slot for a 8GB memory card, which is the biggest it'll take anyway.
Jacko
30th December 2007, 18:58
lol this is a brand new handset..different design from yours mate.

yep thats mine on the right. never eally use the map thing on it. more of a gimmick imo!
Andy_S
30th December 2007, 19:15
Totally agree with ya there......
To be honest that isnt a very good picture because the original N95 looks too long in the pic where its much shorter in reality.
Theres pros and cons of each phone to be honest, now that the new firmware update has been released on the original, the phones great now, but your right the new one is much nicer.

The nokia maps is a great tool, like last night for example, me and my mates went to barfly in birmingham and hired out a coach but the bus driver got lost, so i used the maps app and gained our gps position and directed him to the club, great tool imo...

Yeah mine is debranded because that is the only way to achieve this update, have you played with the camera yet? its awesome now, everything is done within a flash, no more bloody waiting for the pictures to process. Ive been taking pictures all day and my battery hasnt even gone done a bar, so the battery life has improved by miles.
All in all, the N95 is now a superb phone and is now problem free.

yeah seems a lot better, but it still sometimes comes up with 'sim registration failed' then 'insert sim card' very annoying.

It does sound very annoying, have you tried the n95users website, its a site dedicated to the N95, there might be some one that can help you on there, its a forum site just like this.

Ive had the exact same problem with my N95
Twice!!!
Both times it said sim card reistration failed but it didnt "fix" itself.
Had to go and get a new sim card.
Even when i did that i still had problems not being able to receive calls or texts.
Last tiem i took it back they actually did more than give me a new sim card and got their techies to investigate.
Been fine since, but if it fucks up again im either gonna demand a new N95 go for something totally different
