Hoping to get the net setup soon, Ive been looking around and asking people.
From what Ive read people are saying that I will have to pay XX amount for the
BB service. But then I will also have to pay the BT Line rental on top?
AOL do a BB Service for £19.99 is says, the one with Carphone Warehouse.
My mate works for CPW, he said that on top of that you pay for the BT line?
If you check here though it say:
AOL Broadband Wireless Plus Available WITH THE following AOL Talk Packages
http://shop.carphonewarehouse.com/aol_eligibility.php?NODE_ID=11466
I doubt you can have Broadband alone? Seems like you have to have both the
BB and the Phone line?
What about with Virgin Media, do you know if they can provide just the BB?
Cheers, Rushy.

Compare!
I've got the sky three package! Phone, TV & internet, but we have BT line rental to pay at about £10 a quarter!

I have got BT Broadband with their Vision box, and before the unbelievable problems started, it was good - £30 a month all in, 6,4 MB connection, broadband phone evening and weekend calls free.
I was happy until the whole lot collapsed under the "severe data traffic" put upon it, but it seems to be fixed now!

Cheers guys, think I do need to pay for the phoneline too. See I dont have a
Phone line or Broadband. For ADSL connections you need a BT line (whoever
it is you take it out with)
Best value for £££ Ive found so far is:

As long as it works I cant complain..

Hope this helps you Big R. :y:

My £30 is including the £10 a month BT Line Rental
rushy_23
29th December 2007, 11:16
Hmm thats not bad at all really Jimo, thing is though the Talktalk one is cheaper
inc the phoneline.
£30s a bit too steep for me at the mo Mike. That inc Sky/Cable? Not looking for
a Sky connection I dont think. Will have to have a word with the lady friend.

I'm with BT Broadband and I think they are good.
I pay currently £11 a month line rental (cheapest option), plus £18.99 a month for the Option 3 Broadband which is all the unlimited downloads etc. I do believe it goes up though after 6 months to £22 or £24 a month which yeah is quite expensive, but I think it's good so...!
Virgin Media don't touch them with a barge pole. Had so many problems, it's unbelievable. Louise is currently with them at her parents, it doesn't download ANYTHING nor does it play YouTube videos etc.
Orange are pretty good though, my Dad has just moved from them to BT too.
Has your flat got a BT line?
rushy_23
29th December 2007, 11:26
Think the flat only supports ADSL connection, so cant go Virgin Media/Cable.
I heard that Virgin Media now offer ADSL connection. Thats what my folks
have at home (what Im using now) and tbh its really good. Very fast like.
See that BT option still sounds a bit too pricey.
Luke
29th December 2007, 11:29
Yeah Virgin Media do a ADSL connect line, I think it's about £18 a month IIRC.
BT option is pricey yeah, but I presume if you have used the ADSL Virgin Connection then it's reliable, go for it. You will have to pay BT the line rental though...!
rushy_23
29th December 2007, 11:32
Nah my folks have the Virgin Cable option.
IM not really considering Virgin as its a bit too pricey too. Thinking the Talktalk
option I posted up previously will be the one. Trying to keep running costs down
yous see.
Lots of stuff to get sorted before FCS :P

There are 3 main options when it comes to Broadband
ADSL (through a phone line)
Cable (through a fibre optic cable fed into the property)
LLU (Local Loop Unbundling)
The most common is ADSL and will ALWAYS require an active BT line. If you do not have an active BT line, its likely BT will charge you £124.99 to activate it. Once you have this you can then order ADSL broadband. You can either get line rental from BT (like £11 an month) or take out one of the special deals a lot of companies are offerent where they give you phone and broadband for one price. Orange do this and so do sky i think.
Cable if offered by Virgin (formerly NTL). You need to like in a cabled area and the service comes in through a fibre optic cable fed into the house by an engineer.
Local Loop Unbundling is another option but is rare because your local BT exchange must have this service. Google 'Be Broadband; to find out if it is.
Hope that helps

Be carefull mate (funny right) caue just cause it says you will get that speed, doesnt actually mean you will get that speed. Mine said 8mb for my line test and i struggle to get 5 max.

talktalk is sh!t for broadband, supposed to get 8mb but only get 2mb little or no connection during the evenings, some websites wont work and your download speeds are capped during the evening :n:
i wish i stayed with orange now

how about vodafone mobile broadband
get a usb modem (plugs into a usb port) and away you go, no need for a landline as its "mobile" £30 a month unlimited usage (capped at 3gb) and the modems free on an 18month contract or bout 60quid on a 12 month
EDIT: Vodafone is much better than orange's broadband, i know sometimes its cheaper to get a land line then a package but i suppose it works in different ways for different people

How can it be unlimited usage with a 3gb cap?
If its capped, then its limited, not unlimited.
On a 5mb connection you coud easily download 3gb in one day

why on a mobile tarriff are unlimited texts capped at 3000?
nd i didnt mean capped i meant fair usage policy, 3gb is an awful lot to use providing you dont download films etc

I used to work for BT Wholesale, yea an 8 meg connection or DSL MAX as its
know as in "the business" is not actually 8 meg. Its upto. Its dependant on line
quality and the distance from the exchange.
For example if you live right next to it your expected to have an aswesome connection.
Anyhoo, damn didnt realise the line would need activatiing!!! That sucks ass
big time. There is a BT phone "socket" in the flat but I dont know if its active.
Well I doubt it is.
Fuck this may be more £££ than I thought.

why dont you just do like sky talk tv and suf for like £20 quid a month or summit like that?

As far as it goes for us, BT is the best. We've had other companies, all others had shit customer service, massive charges for problems. Where as BT CS is great and there arent any charged if your on a BT line.

BT is the best
Its something to research into I guess matey. TBH from after working with BT
for 2 years what I found is most customer faults are due to incorrect wiring with
in the home. Too many appliances on the line, wiring too long or under objects
reducing the service.
Its not too often that its an issue with the line or exchange. And when it is you
dont pay anything.

Sky (http://mysky.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/getall3)
With that all you would have to do is pay for any call and £11/month for BT line rental. ( if there is a line there it can be activated for free)
If you let me know if that's what you want to do I can also get you £50 of M&S vouchers;)

Wow thats cool!
I know theres a BT Line there, its just not active cause we have just moved in.
Actually Im a bit confused now.
When people say you have to pay £124 whatever it was. Is that for the line to
be installed or just to have it activated?

If an engineer has to attent to connect they will charge you.
9 times out of 10 they can activate a line without having to visit the property and there will be no charge.
All you have to do is ring BT on 0800 800 800 and speak to a customer service advisor who will be able to tell you if it can be activated.
If so you can ask them to do it (normally within 5 days) amd sky BB is you new best friend:p

Ahh well the line is there, just needs activating. So that cant cost me £120+?
And then I imagine I can call TalkTalk and get the BB/Telephone sorted. Or the Sky option.

29th December 2007, 20:51
I wouldn't use talk talk tbh. They are the worst company I have ever used!!!
Never had a problem with Sky *touches wood*
Seriously though, if you decide to go with Sky we can "recommend a friend" so just let me know

Will let you know matey, as I said as long as it works Im not too fussed. Good thing
with Talktalk is that where I work now (Fujitsu on behalf of AOL) we work with
Talktalk BB services too.
I can sort most issues within the home. Issues at the exchange I could check out
myself haha!
But anyways, yea I will look into the Sky stuff. Cheers for that, cant rep you
Craigy baby, Ive already shared my Dingdong with you.
