Following on from my thread in the member section...

..ok

Most of you know i changed jobs at the start of Nov. I went from been jack of all trades in IT to specializing in a certain area of IT (sql). This something you kinda have to do in IT, to make big bucks. So when i got offered the job i was more then happy to go for it. After all its only 3 miles from my house, they were offering about 4k more then i was currently getting paid (plus i save about 1k on fuel) So i took the offer.

Let me tell you about the company - They provide two different software, both do the same thing but ones the old version and other is the new version. I was told the old version hardly has any problems and we very rarely touch it, all the focus is on the new software.

Now when i got here on my first day, the guy whos position i was taking had been in a motorbike accident and was out of work for 2 weeks. Everyone seemed busy and VERY unapproachable. So i was like a lost sheep

Anyway, i got my brandnew laptop. Put all my software on it and stuff and was told to install the software they supply. I did this and Boom off i went. On the same week i had a course to go on about the new software. The following week i had 20mins of the old software.

So now i feel comfy with the new software and enjoy working on it, but when they told me about the old software hardly been used was a massive pile of bollocks. i get more enquerys about the old software then new. Iv only had 20mins training onit, the users actually know more about it then me. So i feel a complete fucking dick head when talking to them.

Some times i can go a full day and not have anything to do. The banter in the office is poor. Some people come in and i dont think they speak all day.

Iv never worked for a small business before like this, so i guess some things are bound to be different. Like the flexibility of been 10-15mins late and no 1 giving a shit. But sometimes i just think its a bit too laid back.

I took this job to learn SQL and hopefully be too busy to even think about surfing the net allday. But its actually worse then my last two jobs, Its boring sometimes nothing happens. I know fuck all about 1 system we support and people who know aobu that software are too busy to help.

I actually think i hate it.....

Things havnt changed. I still no nothing about the old software, people are aware of this but are too busy to help...

Banter is poor, yesterday they was a board meeting leaving 3 of us in the office, no 1 spoke for 3 hours.

Friday i said 'bye have a nice weekend everyone' no 1 replied all just tucked away in there laptops.

Now for the hard part....

Yesterday i was emailing my old supervisor, just seeing how he was. We do this regually just to catch up and what not. He jokingly ask me if i wanted a job and in my current situtation i said 'Yeh if you pay me enough haha'

So he goes i could nearly match what your on now. I said see what you can do with higher management and let me know whats what.

Turns out they never got anyone to fill my place. He BCC me into the emails and all the management there still think highly of me.

Anyway about 15mins ago i got an email directly from Technical Services Manager, saying

understand form Allan and Ahmed you are interested in a return to ICM. Everyone speaks highly of you so I have no issue with this and am happy to make an offer for you to return , benefits, terms and conditions as before on a salary of £xxxxx per annum.

If you can confirm this is acceptable in principle and a proposed start date, I will ensure the formal paperwork is sent out to you confirming this.

I look forward to your reply, best regards

So there it is, a job back at my old place for the taking....

I always said i would never go back, but i do actually miss the job and the people.

Here it is...

Bad,
They cant match my current salary exactly....
It will involve an extra £40 a month fuel...
Can be stressful at times...

Good,
I like the actually job...
i know the job inside out and the contract i work...
I actually feel wanted at that place...
they have a killer restraunt...
I can work over time...

Now i know i will be doing some overtime, that will bring the salary back to meet my current wage here and more. So in theory its actually better money.

But more miles to work.

Money isnt everything and you have to enjoy your job.

The balls in my court but im confussed to fuck. I hardly slept last night thinging about it all.

So could do with some input.

Sorry for the long read :)

At the end of the day Leckie, you still living at home? So you dont have much outgoings anyway?

Money isnt everything, and £40 a week extra isnt exactly a killer!

If it was me I know exactly what I'd be doing, going straight back to my old enjoyable job!

Leckie, mate, you've summed it up yourself.

Money isnt everything and you like the job.

As for the people not replying, my mum has he same at her work, there all nerds always tucked into computers, no life apart the net (like us sax-piers lol)

but you enjoy, better than your previous job?

at the end of the day you have to do what is best for you mentally aswell as financially.

Hope things sort theselves out :y:

Its always best to work somewhere where you are valued and respected as a person. Where the environment is friendly and laid back, and somewhere you feel like you're needed. And it seems like you are :y:

go for the lesser paid job, the fuel cost is annoying but its only a minor issue. Good luck with everything mate.

didnt you take the new job for experience within a criteria you NEED in order to further your career and FUTURE income and job role ?

if so stick it out

cant have been that great if you left in the pfirst place?

your new place sounds like its full off your stereotype I.T workers to be honest, no wonder they get a bad name

betty02
8th January 2008, 12:01
Seriously IT is one of them things, it can be a real bitch to work with or it can be pretty dam enjoyable as you know i work in a school as an It Techy, and i wouldnt swap it for anything the people are amazing, i love what i do, money isn't the best and with the things i have got i can easily be earning double to 3 times as much money as im on now (fully Cisco certified at 18!!) but thats like me i got offered at the age of 18 a job of 40+k a year my my aunties partner, working for system being a engineer basically go out configure cisco switches and routers, set them up etc, but i hate it, find it so fucking boring so i decided not to do it.

I would rather be working here were i dont mind getting up for work, were the people are nice, banter is good, and i get along with them, money is alot less but id rather sit here enjoy myself and earn, instead of dragging myself all voer the country to hate work, for more money.

personally go back its for the best, you by the sounds of it will be happy within yourself, money isnt everything, but its ncie to have that extra, if you want it that much then you do overtime as stated.

Hope this helps mate!

Job satisfaction is where its at these days, money cant buy happiness as they say

If you feel welcome and appreciated the likely hood is your going to perform to a higher level, thus keeping you focus and entertained in the job and not bored, making you look for other work.

By the sounds of it even though this new place you are working had loads of pro's etc, it just so happens that it aint for you. Don’t look at it as a failure, look at it as experience. Learn and move on.

You in a excellent position to take up your old job, on a better salary. Management speak highly off you so work at it and maybe a promotion could be on the cards.

I love office banter, its what makes the day go quicker and better so for me all the right cards are on the table

Good set of people
You liked the job
Your experience in the job
Most important is the killer restaurant loll

In all honestly mate I'd jump ship, know one wants to be a in a job they don’t like

I envy you leckie - walk in and out of jobs when you like.

vidal
8th January 2008, 12:07
Before you jump ship, which job will give you the best experience you can sell on to any prospective employer? Not just now, but in 12 - 18 months and beyond.

What is going to maximise your earnings over your lifetime?

Learn the old software, there will still be many users of it, if you need a course or training, ask your supervisor - he will want to see you productive rather than surfing all day!

As to the general atmosphere in the office - you are the new face, in a small environment, they will need time to get to know you, or perhaps they are all busy and don't have time to talk. Do you get together out of work? If not, why not arrange a night out so you can get to know them.

See, now I've made your decision a bit harder.

as above people on about satisfactions being the most important... depends really

say your goal was to be an actor on a BIG tv show,
you currently work on a low budget tv show whichi is fun,
you get offered a job on a big time new documentary series. which you need in order to boost your cv for big jobs to say you have been on the big tv

you work in this doc and its soooo boring its wildlife and you have to do it for 4 months, you either quite your goals because it isnt fun and go back to working on low budget tv shows for life. or you muck it out and do it... then go to the big time..

nothing in life is free if you want to go further and you need this experience then i would say deffo stick it out. its called commitment and how much you really want something.

Scattle

dsh85

Kwijibo_VTR
8th January 2008, 12:29
Money can't buy you happiness.
You are obviously unhappy in your new job because if put bluntly you don't know what you are doing.
You liked your old job because you knew what you were doing.
If I had to make the choice I'd go back, even if it ment a slight drop in money, because money isn't everything at the end of the day.

The balls in my court

So could do with some input.

If the cash side of things is a concern explain your extra outgoings and ask them for a travelling allowance on top of your salary to compensate.

As you stated above the ball's in your court. They obv want you back. Play on that

joemcevoy
8th January 2008, 12:42
Tough decisions. Is your new job really going to offer you everything you want to move on to. Is the money that its going to generate in the future that much?

Like people say. Moneys not everything, but unfortunatley you do still need it. So if you have to, stick it out and see were it goes.

Hanuman
8th January 2008, 13:15
leckie is it down to money, or the fact that you need the experience to move on,,, if its money then go to ur old job as theres no real benefit in this new one other than slightly more money

if its experience you NEED in order to further ur career, then anyone saying jump ship is bad advice, if you actually wanna further your career then being in a job ur not happy with is something you need to do in order to progress stick it out.

al_VTR
8th January 2008, 13:19
Sounds like you've pretty much made your mind up to me mate.

If i were you i'd take the old job back, they've offered you the money you wanted and you obviously prefered working there. You'll kick yourself if you don't take the opportunity. Anyway, sounds to me like you're only stalling out of principal cos you said you would never go back there. The extra money you'll be paying out in fuel will be covered by your overtime from what you said :y:

Ok....

Firstly No i didnt take the job as iNEEDed that experience to progress, i can go back to my job and still progress from there. It was a total different path in the IT career. I was back at the bottom of the ladder learning it. But if i go back to my old job i will go back to the same postions (half up the ladder if you get me?)

I left my old place as this place sounded so good, company car, trips out of the country etc. None of which have been mentioned since and in this exact roll i cant see myself getting them.

Hanuman
8th January 2008, 14:20
ok then mate.... simple go back to your old one. even if ur half way up the ladder there (they obviously think good of you) how many companys try bring back a prev employer offering more money aswell. normally once ur gone ur replaced easily enough simple ass. id deffo go back to the old one.

V.

You cannot compair the two roles. One is working with SQL databasing and other is IT networking and administating.

Either way both have high sectors i can go onto and both supply a good enough income to raise a family, nice cars, house and few holidays a year. Which is all i want from life.

Nobody has time to train me for 3 days, they dont provide training to users anymore as most new cilents buy the new software not the old software.

Regarding the banter in the office, its nothing to do with how long i have been here, its an open pan office and people just dont talk. Maybe they are busy but isit so hard to say morning and cya once a day? I cant really go out with any of the guys here, they are alot older then me 50+ and live quite far from the office.

I dont need the experience from this job. Like i said above, i went to specialising in a certain field of IT rather then doing mulitple tasks. either way i will get to a point where i can have a better then average lifestyle.

leckie is it down to money, or the fact that you need the experience to move on,,, if its money then go to ur old job as theres no real benefit in this new one other than slightly more money

As above again really mate, nothing to do with the coin. I have a comfortable life style with the amount i'm on and aint really limited to what i can and cant do (within reason) and about progression higher in my career, see above. i can progress either way.

Your pros and cons for your old job v your new one seem to go in favour of going back to your old job. At the end of the day none of us have experienced either jobs so really we dont know what they are like. Being a guy whos studied ICT for the last 4 years in different areas and now on another 2 year course in even wider areas, i know that if you get into the wrong section in IT it can make everything seem so much worse. Its a case of going to the place that makes you happy both in office banter but also in the job aspect. If you can do the job well it makes life so much easier and if you have the possibilities of moving up then i can't see any reason not to be there. A bit of money, so who cares? you may find promotion in your old job and youll be rollin in it.

Tough Decision.
Personally i would go with your old job which you prefer because it's more enjoyable and especially as the people there you can actually talk to. sounds like the office You are in at the min would do my head in (no one talking). I don't think money is the main factor hear i think the fact that you don't appear to like your new job at all is so in my opinion you should go back to your old job mate

Hope this helps in some way :)

go back...

i say do it!

Jacko
8th January 2008, 18:09
this is quite the pickle.

which route in IT would you prefer to take?

if you aint bothered then old job seems the only option.

if you prefer the route of the new job, then is it worth sticking it out for a few monthes until you can progress to similar work but with a bit of luck a better working environment?

Work is hard to cope with without some banter. got moved to a different office last week, went from an office like yours where you're lucky if you get a hello/goodbye from them to an office with a few geezers who like football and are good crack. makes the world of difference dude.

imo the old job pwns.

Daniel,

I am pleased you will be returning as your colleagues have spoken highly of you.

I will pass the details to HR today for them to send you a formal offer out and look forward to seeing you on the 4th.

I'd like to get together with you on the 4th, to get to know you but more importantly so we can talk about our plans for service at ICM and you hopefully will see that you won't just be dropped completely back into your old seat and job and that things are happening here which presents an opportunity to grow and further your career.

Best Regards and see you on the 4th.

One thing I would advise against is not mentioning your current employer on your CV. I'd ask some searching questions at any interview why there was a gap in employment, were you in prison, living on the streets? There is nothing to be ashamed of in saying that you tried a job, didn't like it and left. (Unless you have about 50 jobs like that!)
