Saxo gear lever

Underneath the gear knob, is it a thread or the a simple stub end with a 'knobbled' effect? if the latter, any idea on how to convert this to a thread?

my 106 didnt have a thread just a plastic thing stuck on the gear lever. I think you just take a hacksaw to it. and cut it off. looks like the previous owner of my car did it that way.

what i was hoping to do was fit a quiafe or B&M style knob to my standard lever, but the new knob comes with either a 10mm or 12mm thread.
