You put the ethernet lead into your pc. then run a usb from your pc to your xbox. But you have to enable some connection settings on your pc. If i were you i wouldnt be doing it like that, for some reason you will get a shit load of lag. Your are best with just a ethernet lead directly from the xbox to the modem.

best off getting a router mate so much easier and faster to use......but if your trying to connect through your pc..... go to your internet conection on your pc enable internet connection sharing for your actual internet connection and then click on something like settings and enable xbox live... but as said before you will get loads of lag which is shite.....

buy a router and plug the ethernet cable in the back.
means you can have it wireless too if you buy the right bits.

how does your pc connect to the internet?

if there is a internet/wireless connection in network connections aswell as the local area network then highlight them both and then select bridge connections, make sure your xbox is assigned to get settings automatically.

dont need a router although it is easier, and it will add about 1ms or less lag i would imagine with it going through the pc.

ive connected many and it isnt a problem

I have my router plugged in downstairs into the asdl phone line. You can either have some dirty long ethernet from that to the 360, or a wireless adaptor for the xbox.

What I have is, my laptop upstairs is connected to the router then, my ethernet from the laptop to the xbox, works a treat, but make sure you right click..properties on the wireless, and go to advanced tab and click share thing connection.

You can buy these things from maplins etc which allows you to run a network over your phone line. if say you had a router downstairs, you can run an ethernet cable into the the mains adaptor. you need 2 of these adapter things, then you plug the other one into the mains socket in your room and run an ethernet cable into the back of your xbox through there.

If you want to plug directly into the pc, first off you need to make sure you have an ethernet crossover cable.
you also have to enable ICS on network settings.

also to get the ip of the computer and the DNS for your ISP, go to

start ---> run ---> type 'cmd'
a black screen will appear with some writing
now type 'ipconfig /all'
dont forget the space between config and /all

it will then come up with all of the details of your ISP
