I recently bort some vtr alloys off ebay for £30 had no picson the auction but I thought i would get them anyway and refurb them. Auction said curbed but not badly or deep. Was pleasantly suprised when they came like this:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj305/9ds9/DSC01081.jpg
I started sanding them down as I planned to paint them:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj305/9ds9/DSC01083.jpg
I decided because of their good condition that i would try to polish them so i got the paint stripper out and cleaned them up:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj305/9ds9/DSC01089.jpg
I quickly decided i would never be able 2 keep them clean so I went back 2 the idea of painting but carried on stripping the paint 2 bare metal.

20th January 2008, 21:48
sorry about double pic lol
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj305/9ds9/DSC01090.jpg
anyway...
i stripped the wheels back 2 the metal so they looked like this:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj305/9ds9/DSC01091.jpg
then sanded them goin from 240 - 1200 grit sandpaper, so they looked like this:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj305/9ds9/DSC01095.jpg
then i got on to cleaning them, gave them a good wash inside and out,
before:

Out of interest how have you got rid of the kurbing marks? Have you sanded them out or filled them or what?
Lookin good anyway!
9ds9
20th January 2008, 22:15
the kurbing marks wernt 2 bad really so i just sanded them out with 240 grit then smoothed up to 1200 grit. on th very rim there are still marks but i wasnt 2 bothered about these.

20th January 2008, 22:43
that etching primer is good stuff.
i did my 205 gti speedlines myself.
i adivise around 4 coats of primer then about 4 coats of laquer to ensure
the finish lasts.
good job so far !
9ds9
20th January 2008, 22:47
yeh i read that you need 4 coats of primer up 2 5 coats of the colour and then 3/4 coats of laquer. cheers for the advice.

21st January 2008, 00:32
looks good so far mate. bet you cant wait to get them done!
claret-vtr
21st January 2008, 13:53
So would you recommend i use etching primer instead of just normal grey primer??
9ds9
21st January 2008, 14:11
if you have gone 2 the metal use etching primer because it bonds to the alloy if you still have paint you can use normal primer. im using the etch primer for the base coat then normal primer for the primer layors.

Well the majority of the wheel is down to bare metal it is still like primer gray in areas so im goin to put some paint stripper on them and get them rite down!! cheers pal

no problem, what are the plans for yours colour wise?
claret-vtr
21st January 2008, 15:23
Im not sure yet was thinking white. then i thought gloss black. Id like something different so ive got a mate to photoshop me a wheel in gloss black with the grooves in the wheel in yellow or white with yellow grooves because i cant picture it! Ive also been tempteg to fill the grooves and have them completely smooth. What do u think and what are your plans?

21st January 2008, 15:25
im doin mine dark silver/gunmetal. what colours your car?
claret-vtr
21st January 2008, 15:30
My cars silver with anthracite vts wheels which is why i was thinkin white so i hav a dark set and a light set. If i do the vtr wheels gloss black ill prob redo my vts wheels white.

9ds9

yeh put plenty of time and effort into them, the preps the hard bit!
i recon you shud do your vts wheels white claret and then your vtr wheels gloss black. but thats just my opinion coz i dont like vtr wheels white.:panic:

9ds9
26th January 2008, 18:52
the etch primer which was just 1 coat was in a spray can the rest (filler primer and next the colour) is done using a spray gun

bakkipouch
28th January 2008, 22:55
respect for doing it yourself dude
bolts could try the scrappy or even citroen shouldnt think there that expensive
9ds9
28th January 2008, 23:04
Iv asked on ebay and people say £30 delivered. i might try the scrap yard this week if i dont get a better price than that. citroen will be the last resort haha
DavidKent
28th January 2008, 23:13
Citroen charge about £1.18 or something Per bolt if that helps, Over a quid anyway.
Nice one for doing them yourself!

cheers mate that actually help to know! been told its best to get the original bolts because they are flat headed unlike most alloy bolts!

29th January 2008, 00:01
quick question. How long did you spend on the sanding stage?
All together per wheel? rough timescale?
Graham
29th January 2008, 00:02
i love the look of the wheels primed
9ds9
29th January 2008, 00:05
i would say about 1.5-2 hours. i would recomend using paint stripper and getin all th paint off becasue alot of my time was used up getin patches of paint left after stripping them off. if you get them 2 th bare metal then sand i would say you could have them done in an hour/ hour and a half.
9ds9
29th January 2008, 00:06
wheels look cool primed! wonder if thers anyone with just primed and laquered wheels lol?

29th January 2008, 00:21
nice one mate. Im doing mine atm and spent an hour on my most clean wheel (less kerbed) and its taken an hour - not even finished it!
If you get some new bolts - could you let us know? Im thinking of doing mine white but with rusty bolt heads they will look pap.
Its eother new bolts or bolt covers like predator_vtr......cant source them though!
9ds9
29th January 2008, 00:27
yeh i presume it would with laquer on!
9ds9
29th January 2008, 00:34
i havnt even got bolts yet so ur lucky lol. black bolt covers could look good on white wheels, good contrast. il let you no if i find any bolts and price
Morgan_VTR
29th January 2008, 00:42
nice one mate. appreciate it!
Yep, cars black so was thinking that way. It would just be a pain to repaint the bolts themselves..... any they are bound to get messed up when removing etc.
good work anyway mate..... nice colour, very subtle!
claret-vtr
29th January 2008, 06:33
Look really good pal ive nearly got mine sanded down now. Its not easy with the weather. I followed your example and used paint stripper makes it a whole lot easier. I sanded all the first wheel. Heres a photshop someone did for me with the grooves filled what do you think?

claret-vtr
30th January 2008, 06:34
I want something different which is why im askin for people to do different photoshops for me. I cant make my mind up but i think im leaning towards the smoothed ones.
9ds9
30th January 2008, 08:18
its a tough call between yellow and black and the smoothed. i really cant decided which i prefer both look good and noone else has wheels like them so their both individual!
goldenfurio
30th January 2008, 13:19
Ad go for thhe smooth looks difrent and looks smart
9ds9
30th January 2008, 18:45
yeh i probs think go smoothed. propbs easier than havin 2 paint all th grooves aswell lol
claret-vtr
30th January 2008, 20:44
How would ou smooth the grooves would you rub the wheel down with 240 grit then do the filling then rub down with the 1200 grit?
9ds9
30th January 2008, 21:50
yeh thts probably the best way, cant say im any sort of expert so if any 1 else thinks different say. but yeh 240 and then loads of filler and that smoothed down should do the trick! keep me updated mate
claret-vtr
30th January 2008, 21:52
will do !

30th January 2008, 22:03
what stage u at with ur wheels at the moment?
claret-vtr
31st January 2008, 06:16
They are nearly all sanded down to bare metal. I work nights so its hard to find time and because of the shitty weather i cant really do them outside. My uncle is coming to visit this weekend so i mite try and blag him to take them and finish them off coz hes got a spray gun so it would be a better finish than out of a can. I would like to do them myself though to see how they turn out.
Where are you upto with yours are they finished and wrapped in rubber yet?
Mochachino
31st January 2008, 15:41
looking good mate! i bought 4 last night and started the refurb process!

9ds9
31st January 2008, 16:05

31st January 2008, 23:54
ther is still some kurbing on the very rim photo shows it up, its inevitable they will sadly get kurbed at some point tho so i ddnt spend too much time tryin to get these perfect or i would have had 2 sand half the rim away lol. and yeh im chuffed with the colour mix!

DavidKent
3rd February 2008, 11:21
Haha That made me smile.. Made me think of my mum..
First time she drove my Saxo, it had 16's (Luckily not in great nick anyway), She kerbed it half way round, and has done it to every car of mine since, yet doesn't do it to her own!
Strange how other people manage it so well! lol

Well Done Looks Good
9ds9
5th February 2008, 19:29
etch primer is the best to use on metal because it bonds to the alloy. its not too expensive off ebay £10.95 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-x-A-sol-Acid-Etch-Primer-Galvanised-Steel-Aluminium_W0QQitemZ290180468150QQihZ019QQcategoryZ 57217QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQtrksidZp1638.m118.l1 247QQcmdZViewItem) free postage u only need 1 coat of this then u can build up normal primer.
