but if the finance is over a number of years you still have to pay the insurance on the 2nd...3rd...4th etc years. So monthly payments will be much higher after the 1st year.

its not worth killing yourself just to have a brand new car, you wont enjoy it as much. just get a cheaper car and spend money gradually on that, that wat you'll enjoy it more.

buying new is a waste of money. if you struggle to insre it the following year you're left having to sell it and will have depreciated by a shhhhit load.

your money though.... I'm just a tight bastard.

Finance or Loan :(

dont take this personally.

you're being a tit.

you will regret it. pay £15k+ for a car on finance when you finish (if ever) paying for it you'll have paid more like £20k and have a car worth a few grand. then you'll have sky high insurance, tax and fuel costs.

bin it and you're in bummingland.

in MY opinion you've got to be on crack to buy a car on finance. but i dont get that excited by a lump of metal... but we're all different. putting a car before everything is uber uber :homme:

your call man.

mattchewone
21st January 2008, 23:40
I know its not being put first but i really want it and have got to consider other things first like rent and insurance. I am going to find out all the info i need first like repaymenst and interest and length before i decide!
But i think they may have 0% int on all the corsa but its something i need looking at. £1500 insurance is live able for me for wanting the car. I may just be a MAD nut but it makes me happy and being happy is what life is about (i think)
Thanks for the advice Ads and i completly understand you mate! (your a tight git student though lol) only joking!

i would sit on you cash for now mate and wait... get an old run around for a year just to get your 1st years no claims and do pass plus because that will give you an extra year for free so after 1 year of waiting you can have 2 year no claims... secondly if possible also buy a demo or pre factory built as you can get discount of them where as the dealers will not move on price for factory orders.

mattchewone
23rd January 2008, 22:49
Well i have been driving since july 2006. I have had this piece of shit 1.1 saxo for that long and dont want to buy another cheap run around. Fed up of repairs on a low cost banger. I am going up to vauxhall to see what i can get. Can they budge on the cars on the forecourt then? Would like a demo as can get a good discount on them.

Can they bidge on forecourt prices, if they have one there that i like can i push for a lower price???

From the peolple I know once you have finance on a car you will always have finance on 1. As soon as you have paid for it it you will want another (If you last that long) so the cycle is never ending. My mates who started out in there first job had a car on finance and to this day they have now got better more expensive cars but they are never paid for. A paid for car is far better than 1 on finance and plus you have more money at the end of the week to enjoy.

focusst225
23rd January 2008, 23:05
demo cars are never "rag" what your thinking of are curtesy car's demo car are the nice pritty one in the show room the ones that go out with dealers.

mattchewone
23rd January 2008, 23:09
Well i would love to pay for it but i dont have £15k in my back pocket. I am looking into a loan. Well i think once i have sold it i will settle the loan and consider then what i will do for a next car etc.

focusst225
23rd January 2008, 23:19
take some inderpendant advice from me mate im not going to say who i work for but it motor trade related. never never get a loan on a car if you want finance go for HP or something like it. you dont have to take the dealers choice in HP as it tends to be black horse. you can shop around and find the best deal for you also get gap insureance its a one of payment of around £300 but if you total your car it will pay the differnce between what your insurance company pays out and the cost of a new car (the same make and model) and trust me when i say ive seen a load of people angry and upset when they total a car that they bought for £15k and found out 6 months later that the insureance company will only pay out £8k. also with hp after you have paid 1/3 of the amount borrowed you can just give the car back to the finance company (dont let any try to tell you you cant because you can) that the good points of hp the bad point is the intrest. try to get 0% but that tents to only be on 3 years or less and free insurance on the VXR range is 22 and over (they wont budge on your age) hope this helps

mattchewone
23rd January 2008, 23:23
Why not get a loan? I was told not to get finance. What is HP? Can you buy gap insurance if you get a loan or is it only when you get finance. Anyways i was looking at aroung 5years for a loan to make payments easier and more affordable. Could do sooner but would be totally skint lol.
Not even 100% sure if they will allow me to borrow that amount.
Plus i have to find an insurance company to insure me before i do anything! Really winding me up about insurance!

focusst225
23rd January 2008, 23:27
hp is finance it stands for hire purchess. how old are you if you dont mind me asking and have you ever had a loan or credit card ect. all insurance companys will treat you like that i will be suprized if you can get a corsa sxi under £1k let alone a VXR

mattchewone
23rd January 2008, 23:30
Corsa SXI i can get pretty cheap as there like insurance group 4 i think. I am 19 in may. Just got a credit car never used it, never had a loan. I am sure there is someone out there that can insure me for less the £2k or around £2k im reasonably happy with that.

Can you take gap insurance if you take a loan? So who do you work for mate??

focusst225
23rd January 2008, 23:31
just to give you an idea if you want a small hot hatch

corsa vxr are 16e
Fiesta "S" are 6a
Fiesta ST are 13a

focusst225
23rd January 2008, 23:34
yes you can get gap but the problem being they will only pay the capital of the loan not interest. iterest is calculated dif between HP and a bank loan banks work on a quartly base rate and hp is worked on a fixed base rate. so if your loan interest is £2k you will be left to foot the bill

mattchewone
23rd January 2008, 23:35
Yer i dont like fords though lol. I love vauxhalls and have always disliked fords, not sure why but just have. Really have my heart set on this VXR.

Lets hope nothing happens i will speak to barclays on saturday and see what they say. I will mention gap insurance and see if they have anything to say.

focusst225
23rd January 2008, 23:38

the cosra SXi 1.4 is 4e
corsa design 1.6 is 8a

23rd January 2008, 23:39
So where do you work then mate??

focusst225
23rd January 2008, 23:42
good luck anyway just dont put your self out. and to give you a heads up unless you know the vaxuhall dealer near you really well they might want a £100 deposit before you test drive or your parent to test drive for you. dont be affended the amount of 17 and 18 year old's wanting to test drive ST 500's and Astra VXR's is funny i just laugh at them now..

focusst225
23rd January 2008, 23:50
the only problem i night see you having with a loan is you have no credit history ... i would be like me asking you for £15k ie you dont know me. same with a bank but they might have a good idea or too at the bank they might even do car loans secured on the car like hp its worth looking in though

mattchewone
23rd January 2008, 23:54
We shall see on saturday then lol! Thanks alot for the help matey! Trying not to get excited etc about it but i want it so much and i never get anything good or have anyluck. So my luck will be i cant insure it at all or get a loan.

I wanted to smash my Biology teacher's back door in, in the end I had to lower my sights a little.

Realistically, you cannot afford the car. What happens when next year a different car catches your eye? Save up for something you can afford, enjoy it for what it is and come back when your expectations are a little more realistic.

V.

Its the car i want nothing else catches my eye. I thought it was reasonable its not as if i want a porsche or a TVR or anything that silly its still only a little hatchback!

Even if i wanted something else i would still need a loan as it would take about a year saving to get anything decent. Might just buy a push bike instead.
Give up ever wanting anything!

It may as well be a Porsche or TVR, you cannot afford it. You like it now, but what is it that puts this one car over and above everything else? If it's the colour, get a respray. If it's the equipment, get a lower spec and add extras as you can afford them. If it's the shape, then even the base model from the range will be passably close to it, a few pieces of kit and you've got a replica. Is it the performance? If that's all that bothers you, get an older car that can outperform it - go to an owners club and get a good deal on a mint car with a good rate of insurance.

Even if i wanted something else i would still need a loan as it would take about a year saving to get anything decent. Might just buy a push bike instead.

It's good to know what you want, but to always aim for the stars will only lead to misery.

Its the fact its new and its got everything i like as standard. A nice set of wheels, amazing seats, good performance. Its not got a huge engine but its a turbo. Would be more expensive buying a cheaper model and specing it up and more hassle if im honest. Just want to buy it and be done with it and not have to fiddle about with things. really appreciate the help just nothing else really tickles my fancy and this has just pissed me off.
Fed up of being restricted by everything.

vidal
24th January 2008, 19:05
Matt,

you are not restricted by everything, merely the fact that at the age you are now with the amount of driving experience you have, some cars are out of your budget. It's a tough lesson to learn, and it hurts even more when you see others seemingly having what you want, when you can't have it. It's all part of growing up, and as much as you don't want to hear it, you won't realistically be able to afford 15K for a car and a further 5k+ for insurance, or not whilst wanting to have any normal life.

There are any number of "interesting" cars that can still give many newer ones a run for their money.

Would this spec light this interest you?
* Leather seats
* Alloy wheels
* Central locking
* Electric mirrors
* ABS
* CD
* Climate Control
* Electric windows.

on a 2litre turbo convertible?

How about if you could get it for 2K?

matt i still think you're mad dude.

Not necessarily true. The Demo's at my work (I work at a Citroen dealer) don't even get used. The salesmen use contract hire cars and demo's are just pre registered in our name. We've just sold a demo C3 Pluriel that was registered in October and that car hasn't moved out of the showroom since it arrived. So you may find a dealership like ours to get a good deal. Have you thought of contract hire? We do C2 codes which are basically special edition VTS's with leather and come in black or iron grey for £140 a month for 2 years. All you pay is insurance. You get your tax paid and anything sorted that goes wrong with your car. Then after 2 years you just give it back.

Okey lets have a think,
PAS, Elec windows, Elec mirrors, 3doors. Good acceleration something with decent power (1.6-2.0l i guess). Comfy, possibly leather. Less than 50k miles.
Reliable.
As for maximum price lets go down from £15 to something like £8k.
Not a FORD.

High insurance group, but temper that with minimal purchase costs to help pay for the group 14 :n: insurance.

2.4litre V5 engine, good for 134mph, can be bought for buttons.

I must admit the Abarth Fiats are VERY nice cars.

Matt, like what has been said I don't think you can realistically afford the car, especially the repayments on the loan. I know from personal experience of Barclays that they won't give someone your age that much of a loan - I tried myself when I was getting a car a couple of years ago - despite having a credit rating. The reason you'll find it hard is due to the NCB you don't have (I ain't been funny btw, just been honest buddy). I'd think about this and do what Vidal said with regards to what YOU want a car?

There is other cars out there that will catch YOUR attention. I know how much you want it, but I really want a Focus ST but there is noway I could afford one - unfortuately.

Chin up dude.

Passplus should help you, don't know by how much though...why don't you try a few insurance quotes with 1YRS NCB? I think you'll notice a BIG difference....

I know people don't recommend car finance, but if you really want the car why don't you ask Vauxhall for some figures? I think you'll find that finance is MUCH easier to get accepted for and this will increase your chance of affording it.

How much is the car by the way? How much deposit do you have to put down on it?

Im 19 (and a girl, which i suppose makes a difference) and ive got 2 years no claims and am planning to get a corsa vxr in june. Diamond quoted me £900 and Bell quoted me around the same. Try bell they might give you a good deal!!

You do realise your female yea?

Luke, i dont have anything saved for a deposit which is why i was looking for a loan. Could afford the loan just not paying £5k for insurance. The bloke i phoned said he had 100 insurance compaines on his screen and the cheapest he had was £8k and he said adding my dad with full NCB wouldnt make it any cheaper. I tried Confused with my dad as the main and it came back with £7k! Run out of ideas!

Do insurance quotes with your YOU as the main driver, your girlfriend as a named driver and maybe another female if possible? I'd also do it with you having 1 years NCB if you are looking at doing the Pass Plus too.

If you haven't got anything saved, I presume you'd be financing/borrowing around £14,000 for the VXR?

I added both my parents with pass plus and elephant still want £5k. Yer would be looking at getting £14-£15k going to barclays still to talk about loans etc and to see what i could get up to.
Cant say i have 1years NCB as some companies to take pass plus to be equal to 1 NCB.

EliteCarDetailing
24th January 2008, 23:18
Yeah, there is only certain companies that accept the pass plus scheme.

As for the car cost - say if you borrow £15k on a 5year finance agreement, I reckon you are looking at payments around £250 - £270 a month - is that what you was expecting? As for the insurance, I don't know where you stand mate.

Click here (http://www.passplus.org.uk/insurers.asp) to find out the pass plus insurers.

Yer was looking at around that for payments. So thats not too much of a problem the only thing stopping me at the minute is INSURANCE! Winding me up and over!
Adrian Flux wouldnt even insure me when i rang them earlier. Dont know how else to bring down the insurance. Should i get my dad to ring up for me? and he be the main?

Still going to be a high premium.

I tried it when I my VTR insurance was high - I think it was £2100 myself. So my Dad was £400 for himself (No NCBS) then added me was around £2050 so doesn't make much a difference.

Can't you settle for a smaller engine model or maybe just get something else for a couple of years?

mattchewone
24th January 2008, 23:42
The basic models dont seem the same! Had me heart set on the VXR model the rest just look basic and plain tbh. There is an SRI version which is still a 1.6t but less power. Dont think its out in this country yet though. So not sure what insurance group it is.

EDIT - The SRI (VXR lookalike) which is still a turbo is still group 13 3 less than the VXR. Only difference i can see is the seats and the rear bumper, it doesnt have the triangle exhaust.

mattchewone
25th January 2008, 00:05
Just done a quote for the SRI version and come back with £3.5k which is alot better than £5k-£8k! Hmmm still not what i wanted! Buts its very similiar want the recaros and the triangle exhaust lol.

EDIT done another SRI quote with moneysupermarket and cheaper again £2999 with the same company that quoted me £3.5k on my previous SRI quote on confused. The insurance company is Ecar. Hmmmmmm might ring them up tomorrow.

25th January 2008, 01:02
£3.5k on insurance!?!?! Man, you're 19 (ok i'm 18) but live your life! Spend it on sex drugs and rock and roll! Ever tought about getting the Corsa without the VXR kit on it (furio type?) if they do one???

Yer mate that is the SRI version the rest are just basic models like 1l etc. This is living mate im not into any of the other things apart from sex lol. Cars and the gf are the two things in my life ive got the gf now i want a decent car.

Chico999

what a life you must have! your 19 year old mate. every penny you get will be going to finance companies and loans and insurance. You will have nothing to have fun with!
Get a car on finance when your 22. it seems like a good age to me. even though i would never even think about finance. 20k for a car! you joking?
Come on mate, think about things before you dive into them. Live with a shitty car for another year and your insurance will more than likely be half that!
hope this helps!

Please don't tell me that the shape of the exhaust is all you are fixating on? I know that buying a car is something done with both the heart and the head, but fixing on only one unattainable car to the detriment of all others is really stupid.

Parkers (http://www.parkers.co.uk/insurance/)do a search by insurance group. Try looking for something in there - save some money and in two or three years you will be able to have what you want.

I agree with Sayer, think your mad dude. Your saying I've not got a mortgage etc but if you get finance over 5 years etc your basically stopping your life for this car! Your telling me your gonna keep this car for 5 years and stay living at home?... Payments of £270+ a month will restrict you from being able to do anything else, i.e move out etc.

Live your life lad!

mattchewone
25th January 2008, 14:17
Just because i have a loan for 5 years doesnt mean i will keep it for 5years. I might sell up in 2half years and settle the loan and move on to a mortgage etc. I am living life there aint nothing else to do.

No Vidal you read that wrong, i am just saying the only difference between the SRI and VXR is the rear bumper & Exhaust aswell as the interior. I am not buying it because it has a triangle exhaust lol.

Nothing else tickles my fancy and fed up of the shitness 1.1 thats all. What am i supposed to do with my money till up 22 waste it on crap?

Barry123

What am i supposed to do with my money till up 22 waste it on crap?

thats what you'd be doing with it getting a car on finance.

finance = crap

i understand even now that you will sell a car in 2 years. so it'll depreciate. get back £9k when you sell. owe £9k on finance, when you've already paid £8 of it.
and insurance for it
£13k for a car you'll only own for 2 years.

oh and then there is tax and fuel on top.

stick the money in an account and buy a brand new beamer in 3 years instead.

values are estimates

mattchewone
25th January 2008, 18:22
and drive a shit wagon for three years. Dont really want a beamer not my thang.
Rather have spent money on a car than wasted on dvd's cd's food. Dont go out clubbing or go out that often any ways so dont spend alot in general.
Bored of crappy cars. Get a motor bike instead :y:

Im boring lol.

Right, Matt time for some serious "outside the box" thinking.

Max budget of £8k with no more than group 10 insurance. Needs aircon, fairly sporty, reliable and preferably no more than 50k miles. I've got a few bottles of wine tonight, so I'm hoping to nail this one before moving on to Mrs V :P

Nothing too big, so anything above Vectra / Mondeo size is out. Can't be the blue oval. (Is that everything?)

How about...
http://www.parkers.co.uk/imagecache/file/300x200/archive/Alfa%20Romeo/147/DSC05923.JPG
30,000 miles - 53 plate. Franchised dealer... £5,500 grp 11 insurance, but 3 k in the back pocket helps that.

have you driven the alfa?!?!?!?!

Its excellent, well.... better than a saxo anyway, I'm not sure if the alfa is the JTD one but bloody hell i had a lot of fun in that car. Handling is bit crashy over potholes but thats more to do with the 17's and uber low profile tyres. but otherwise grips really well. Sound system in the one i drove was a Bose system which made me cum in my pants regularly 'do-do-do radio two'.

Has a massive kick in the pants that leaves smiling your ass off.

great car, great price. If i wasn't a tight bastard I'd have one.

Picky? Prefer a Vauxhall over an Alfa?

Apart from wanking over the Vauxhall brochure, have you ever driven an Alfa? Go to your local dealer, negotiate a 24 hour test drive, see if you can blag a weekend - come back on to the forum when you done this and give us your thoughts.

Adsayer is right, they are absolutely cracking cars. The Vauxhall may tick some visual boxes, but sit in the alfa for a day or so, rev it up to the limiter (that's what they like) and enjoy the twisties. Buy one about 2 -3 years old, and the vast majority of the depreciation will have been taken.

Also, as a slight aside, mass produced repmobile, or Italian thoroughbred?

V.

mattchewone
25th January 2008, 22:43
Appreciate the help but just never have been into Alfa's. Just not a fan. They wouldnt allow a 24hr test drive anyways as im so young.
I might go and have a look though just to see if i can broaden my horizons a little. Its the least i can do lol. :y: thanks guys!

Barry123

I'll stick my neck out and say that was the best car I've ever driven. Im not sure what the car mags reviews are but it was a real treat to drive. Plus the looks i was getting  20 year old (looks about 12) driving a brand new alfa.

honestly matt, I know you've got your heart set on a car and despite the fact I think you shouldn't you'd be mad to not take the alfa

ok the reliability might be a bit hit and miss, but i've been reliably informed the recent models are far superior in that respect compared to their predecessors.

VtsTom
26th January 2008, 01:37
The thing about Alfas is that they are quite reliable, BUT when they break, the parts are mega expensive. I think a Alfa garage charge standard £65 per hour for labour.

Back onto the VXR. 2 mates of mine have them, a black one and a red one, one lads 19 the other is 20.

The 19 year old pays 1800 for insurance but he has 2 years no claims and a clean lisence.

The 20 year old pays 1600 for insurance as he has only 1 years no claims and 2 accidents in the last 3 years.

Putting loads of people on your polocy will bring it lower than your original quote but less is better. Usualy with just your mum as a 2nd driver is the cheapest.

The 20 year old with the red vxr gave his clio as a deposit for finance which they valued at £1500. He then has to pay £350 a month for 42 months (3 and a half years) which is £14700, thats now £16200. At the end of his 42 months he HAS to pay a final lump sum of £5000. Which makes it a total of £21200.

Im not being daft but i saw a 6 month old one in perfect nick go for £12000.

Dont be a mug just because you want a "new car"

mattchewone
26th January 2008, 11:15
Wouldnt mind a second hand one as long as it had a warranty of some sort. I added my mum and dad and they wanted like £5k. Might try again with just my mum.
Would rather do a loan as i dont like the lump sum thing on finance at the begining and the end.
Cheers fella.

That's,

2yrs NCB

Clean license
2 named drivers (like my current policy) - Mum & Louise
6,000 miles a year
No mods etc

Whilst you have your drool mop handy after the Vauxhall dealers, take a trip to the Fiat showroom and have a blast in the new Fiat 500. I'm seriously thinking about one for Mrs V. It was an absolute hoot to drive (even in 1.2 guise), the 1.4 sport may be even better. Styling is fantastic, build quality is great, and there's a 155bhp Abarth version due out this summer. Now that may tempt me to downsize from the Octavia I currently drive :P

Why waste all that money on a car at tis age, when you could be saving for a deposit for a house for you and your girlfriend!

Then when your over 21 you'll have a house, a couple years later you'll hopefully have plenty of NCB and can afford alot of great cars.
Yea you want to look cool and impress everyone with that car at a young age, but when it comes to moving on in life you wont have the money for a decent car.

Everyone who had crappy cars at a young age will have sweet cars and a house when you wont and you'll regret wasting your money on that car.

And one last thing......its a corsa!

mattchewone
27th January 2008, 10:18
Not looking for a house right now anyways, not even worth saving imo way too expensive would rather move abroad. House prices are fuc*ing ridiculous. Everyone i know has a pretty decent car and there all my age, why shouldnt i go and buy a decent car. Because its a lot of money each month, i dont do anything i would only waste it. Least this way i can have a car, save up along side it to pay it off.
Im hopefully looking at being promoted in a year or so to trainiee manager so that should help pay it off sooner. Its what i want to do at the end of the day, im just thinking through payments at the minute, thinking about waiting and saving for a deposit and possibly seeing if a second hand or demo car comes available.

Fordy_87
27th January 2008, 11:52
Fair enough, but take into consideration insurance....Yea it may be about 5k but if your crash and have to claim you'll be paying that again if not more the next year and years to come wont be as cheap as you wanted....but hey each to their own, i just hope you dont get bummed over with payments
