Newbie here looking to buy a vtr

Hi names Andy, live in chadderton in oldham, been driving for 2 years now and have owned 3 mk2 golfs in that time, one for spares lol, now im after something a little nippier.

Been browsing through various websites etc at mk1 VTRs and my budget will probably only be around 1500. Just wanted to get advice from the people who know what to look out for, what problems they have and stuff???
