Well I got my insurance renewal through the post on Monday, I was paying 890£ last year for my 1400 Saxo at the age of 20 with all Mods declared (Wheels, Lowered, Back box, CD Player) and I was fine with that as they were the lowest at the time.
So I opened the letter, and to my amazement, they want 754£, and as I was expecting it to be nearer 650£ I got myself onto moneysupermarket.com and got my self some quotes to refer to on the phone. So I rang Brentacre up and had a chat to them, they told me the drop in the premium was fine and had been calculated right, I then quoted moneysupermarket.com and mentioned people were quoting me nearer 500-550£ than my renewal. He put me on hold, then came back and said the one thing I was hoping he wouldn’t; “Do the quotes includes mods?” I had to reply that they didn’t.
I then went into detail about something that has bugged me for months now and I wanted to know why? My question was;
If I was to insure my car with you standard - you would beat my lowest renewal price. – They said yes.
If I was to modify my car (Not the engine) you wouldn’t charge me for them would you? – They said no.
So why do you charge me more because my car is ‘already’ modified?
They answered “I see were your coming from” and that was it, they then went on to tell me they insure there cars on the BHP of the cars, I then went onto to ask why mine isn’t classed as standard then as the car has no engine mods and a standard engine. So I asked them another question; “So if I put my car back to standard before I need to renew and insured it for cheaper, I could then modify the car and not get charged for it, no?”, I got the “I see were your coming from” BS again, the operator couldn’t give me any answers, but the conversation changed and I mentioned how I feel it should be lower, they went onto tell me that I WON’T find anyone cheaper than them to insure modified cars and they assured me I was wrong and doubt other 21 year olds could get it cheaper on a Modified Saxo. I was very skeptical about there accusations…
So the search started that night for cheaper insurance, and my first one to try was ‘Adrian Flux’ (AF) as a recommendation by a friend, he said they were supposed to be good. I did an online quote for my Saxo, and waited for the quote;
The quote arrived today via email; 604£ fully comp with all my above mods I’ve stated declared!!
I know Brentacre will most likely honor the lowest quote, but after the fact they couldn’t actually help me and my questions I may go with AF just ‘because’ they are the cheapest by far.
Very disappointed with the whole experience, as the operator (who is usually spot on with his customer service) got very heated, and when I questioned there methods he got very defensive and riled up. So all in all a very bad experience with Brentacre (didn’t think I’d ever say that).
