View Full Version : Heater Blower

Right chaps & chap-esses, here's one to tackle.
Started up my '97 VTR this morning and the blower fan will only work on the 3rd speed setting.
At the 3rd setting it spins at the same speed it did before, however it just won't work on the 1st or 2nd settings.
I've recently changed the PAS pump and from the other posts here I know there's a link between the PAS, the blower motor and rear screen, however the PAS is working fine, the rear screen heater is OK and the blower is actually working, just not on the 1st two speeds.
The car hasn't been used much over the last couple of weeks so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
One thing I thought is that it might be the switch thats knackered so does anyone have any suggestions on how to test this with a multi-meter.
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!!!

It aint the switch as I've just tested it using a some wire that cost £61.50.
Well the wire was £1.50 but the parking ticket I got for parking in a disabled space was £60!
Was only away 5 minutes too
Bugger!

hmmm only way to truly out rule it is to use another switch, scrappy time?

I really dont think it's the switch as I pulled the connector out the back of it and connected the plugs using wire.
As before the fan came on on the highest setting and nothing happened on the other 2 speeds!
Do you know if the resistors that limit the fan speed are located separately to the blower motor as it's a dash-out job to get that out!

Ye its probably the resistor. Because when the heater is on the 3rd setting is full ampage. When its on a lower setting the resistor is used to restrict the power

where is this god damn little resistor! it probably is the fault but i cant find it:wall:

According to Mr Haynes Pos 1 & 2 have resistors fitted to the motor assembly, Pos 3 gives full fat to the motor, both my Saxo`s suffer from this problem, try finding a blower motor at the scappy:n:

Like some on the forum I've got a switch that works in all 3 settings but a blower that only works on setting III.
Setting III provides one working feed to the blower, then.
Since I've got one working feed to the blower, could I whack two appropriate resistors on the back of position I and position II at the switch end, and wire these to the working feed from position III? Do the resistors have to be local to the motor, or can they be local to the switch?
If it would work, it'd save no end of fannying about with the dash.
I'll have a go myself and report back if someone can say what value of resistors I'd need, and what current-handling capacity they'd have to have. Anyone know how much the motor pulls?
Cheers

Just get another blower mototr mate. Under the drivers side dash, you can see the motor. Remove the wiper mechanism from under the bonnet, and you will see where the motor is held, undo the few bolts, pull the heater duct off the blower under the dash and out she comes. Its quite easy to do. I did mine no probs :p

My mam has the same problem with her astra, so if you find out PM me please! Would have thought it would be a trasistor/fuse, aparently its not the fuse for her however!
