class in what way? sporty of just pimp?
AlexR
26th January 2008, 22:57
Gotta do 20k a year paying my own mileage so anything that does under 35mpg in real use(official figures are always wrong) is out of the window :|
Should have mentioned that in the first post.
Bargains they are tony but too much to run, think of servicing and fuel costs!
All BMWs count i guess, 318coupe is looking good, same engine as my old 318, flabbier shell but better interior. I persuaded you not to get one in performance terms, for comfort and smoothness they are tops though.
Just had a thought, VW corrado!
honda CRX - chav
XR4I - Chav
Astra coupe - Nah not classy
alfa 156 - I actually want to get to work and back
ford capri - nein
lancia delta integrale - ROLF, love them but no
mx-5 - good!
old skool porsche like the 944 or 928. - not reliable enough nor cheap to run.
alpine V6 Turbo! - No lol

class in what way? sporty of just pimp?
As in they don't look at me and go look at that chav in a saxo/shitvic/gashtra/fester. And so when i turn up to meetings they get some idea that i have some class lol
Jacko
26th January 2008, 22:58
saxo...derv
AlexR
26th January 2008, 22:59
Don't mind if it's diesel but it has to be remotely interesting to drive, of all repmobiles only the mundano and 3 series are good to drive.
saxo...derv
Already got one and i absolutely hate it now.
Tony
26th January 2008, 23:06
Lol about 'for performance' reasons... would you like some gloves with your shovel?
What do you work as now Alex?
...and what happened to the 318?

26th January 2008, 23:10
Haha, in all honesty i was really disappointed in how well my BMW drove, it was superb on the motorway though that's for sure, good MPG too for a 1.8 16v. I sold it mate, want something newer that hadn't been round the world 10 times lol

Merc diesel of some description? bmw 325td? below 4 k mmm mx5 is a good bet, do you need to carry stuff? or is it a strictly commute thing?

German Dervs' if your going down the black-pump route. Golf TDi is good. Classy enough, quick enough and frugal, plus they're smooth for long rides, or so I hear. Alfa and Reliability do not mix, but they look dayam pretty though.. :)
AlexR
26th January 2008, 23:36
IS200 is a good one actually, fits the bill well although economy is pretty bad on them, will have to ask some owners ;)
Family cars sort of count as classy i guess, as long as they're not modded lol
Gayer that's out of my price range i think, alfa salesman tried selling me a punto JTD, have to admit for the money you get a lot of car, especially used ;)
MX5 could do, can't really carry passengers though!
325td is too shite, would rather have a 318is. Cheap merc diesels are rare, and would be a c class if so which is shit and boring.
AlexR
26th January 2008, 23:40
I really used to hate driving my mates mk4 golf, 3 series any day, shame a 320d is well out of my range, could easily buy a brand new one but i can't see the point in spending loads on a car which is essentially going to be a workhorse.
Mieran
26th January 2008, 23:41
IS200 is a good shout, my mate's brother had one and they look mint when modified

Reckon they look better std with the optional bigger rimmzzzzzz!
Might just fuck it and buy a 320d, get it over and done with lol
welsh_rich
26th January 2008, 23:55
tbh thinking about it. I'd say a mk4 golf diesel. Practical, fairly smart. Good running costs. Reliable.
As you need it for a "workhorse", that's all you need really, aint it?

Try a laguna, pre facelift models are now coming in on your budget, many with all the usual toys etc.
Alfa (Ad, are you on commission?) is an excellent and unusual buy - reliability is much improved over the old nightmares.
How about this though?
£4300 with 60K on the clock. All the depreciation has gone, it's on a 51 plate and it has a few toys as well.

That Rover above is very tidy indeed, nice British heritage and a classy choice. Plenty of affordable used versions about. Just make sure the mechanics are up to scratch, and you're on your way.

cant see alex in a 75... he's gay but not that gay.
on a serious not, I still say its a good car, alex is more than competent at fixing it if it needed it. and the derv would be a good workhorse. all the optional extras... cheap.
laughing i reckon.

if you really wanted value for money, id put it down to a mondy, i was in your situation and your budget months ago i had it narrowed down to a golf gt tdi, vectra 1.9cdti mondeo 2.0 tddi / tdci, bora. depends what you want, tbf i needed something bigger with good power on the motorway and good mpg, and the model i picked i personally am very happy driving with as it looks quite smart.
After test driving them all the mondy won hands down )golf was on parr) as it was the cheapest at the time by quite abit had just as much extras if not more than the rest, big bonus is its chain driven so no crappy cambelt changes when your putting the miles in, you can either get 115bhp or 130bhp, i got the 115 and its purrrrrfect specially on the motorway
