Hi

I have a 1997 VTR which has got 70,000 on the clock. Recently I've been having a problem with the engine cutting out on me. This happens when I am coming to a stop, the rev counter just keeps on going down till it cuts.

Now, this is an intermitate fault, not happens all the time, but when it does, the only way I can cure the problem is to pull over to the side of the road and turn everything off for a few minutes and then back on.

I have also noticed that when the engine is idling, the rev counter jumps like a kangaroo!!!

I have taken it into Citroen who plugged it in and said they couldn't find anything wrong with it but possibly it could be the ECU or the Idle Control Valve because these are the only things the Citroen computer doesn't check!!

Now as you can understand this is getting a little annoying, and I'm not paying out £500 for a new ECU to find out it’s not the problem.

Has anyone else come across this problem or have any ideas to what it could be?

Thanks in advance

Its 99% probably the idle stepper motor... mine does a similar thing.. but only when the cars hot!

i have a spare stepper motor which I plan to take apart... they may just need cleaning? If os, I'll get some pics of what to do online, etc...

The other possibility is a dodgy map sensor / lambda sensor.

Pics would be great Simo

So you don't recon the ECU then? I came to this conclusion becuase once I turn off the engine for a few mins, then back on, its all ok... like booting a pc, the Eprom has been reset!?!

Sometimes my idle stepper motor sticks, and the car wont idle.... tries to die. Only does it if the cars been left for a while when hot...

Ignition on, press acc pedal fully down, ignition off, press acc pedal down again.. repeat. Always idles fine then, as the idle stepper seems to reset?

I have a simular problem with my vtr everytime i take it to the garaga to get it checked out they cant find anything wrong with it. I have phoned citroens head office and they seem to think its a problem with the fuel pump since they have had a few with the same symptoms as mine and since fitting a new one they have had no problems.

failing that they think it could be a faulty engine temperature gauge.

seems to be a common fault about the TPS sensor, the throttle position sensor as if its faulty then the ecu thinks the throttle is open when really its closed and it starts sending some fucked up signals.

worth checking i suppose

If you want to reset Tps sensor turn ignition on for 10 sek, then off for 10 sek. now turn the engine on and it should run perfect.

At least this works on my saxo vts 16v(2000)

UPDATE: I've found a site (http://www.bba-reman.com/hints_and_tips.htm) that identifies my problem but they said I need to give them the number off the ECU.

Does anyone know where it is and is it easy to get the number?

Thanks

i had this problem and replaced everything possible, eventually i took it to GMC and they fitted a 4.5bar fuel reg, works betta now, but not perfect. Seems some people have to live with it.

Finally got my vrt bac once again from the garage and for once it actually showed up that the fuel pump was malfunctioning when they hooked it up to their computers. Now with the new fuel pump in place ive had no problems as yet. Hopefully thats the problem sorted.

Had a similar thing on my furio.
Was the idle control valve.
It'd idle really funny, pull away slow then belt it, and then cut out at 4k revs.
Could sometimes be the same when slowing down.
Take the battery off for 10 secs, start it up, and drive away, and it begins again.
Not sure how much they cost though, as i had a spare.
