Hi peeps,

Now i am fine with the design element of a website and have been asked by someone at work to set them up a website for their company.

However i've lost grips with hosting. Where is a good place to have the website hosted? and how do i go about setting up a website on the host?

Cheers,

Get webhosting from www.1and1.co.uk and then get an FTP Client, (loads freebies on tinters SMartFTP is the best)

Then you set up the FTP client with the setting sent in your email, and then select the folders of what you wish to upload and then upload it through there!

ahhh cool, i manage our school website and use FLASHFXP to update it, so same sort of thing i guess!

Is there a management software provided by the company to link the URL to the homepage or do they do that on the setup?

Cheers mate il rep you.

1&1's control panel is easy to get to grips with. You can either use that to upload and update the site, or (as I do) setup an FTP account for the site and upload it using filezilla - transfer rates are a bit quicker :y:

Everyone is raving over 1and1. I've got a site hosted by them, and although it's reliable - 3 hours outage in 3 years is'nt bad, their upgrades for existing customers are pretty poor. I started off with their home package - and last year enquired about database support - quite fancied recoding it all and taking a dynamic feed from a database, mainly images and forum posts - as the site is for a charity, money is tight - there was no cheap package with a database, business packages running at almost double the cost.

The site does have a forum, but has to use a flat file format, as does the gallery. Integration onto the main site, ie pulling the latest posts or picutres onto the front page is a complete no-no.

You may not need it at the moment, but pick a package that offers database and php5, that way you won't be giving your clients second best when they ask for more features.

Sorry for the DP

Go with one.com - free domain name, control panel, database etc, oodles of space all for under a 10 spot.

Also, why not use filezilla for ftp - or the built in ftp in dreamweaver?

If in dream you've set up the site( site > manage) you can edit the sites details and dreamweaver will upload your site from there, so you don't need a ftp program..

Dont have it installed atm, but its a tab at the top along with file, edit etc..

www.tsohost.co.uk, cheap and easy to use!

1and1 is quite dear £4.99 a month is around £60 a year.

tsohost is £34.99 a year or £14.99 a year. 5 html pages with a few pics on isnt going to need much web space. I want to get the cheapest possible package but it must be decent

Depends greatly on what you're looking for.

What do you require (ASP - Windows hosting, PHP - Linux or Windows but preferably Linux). Database? FTP accounts? POP acounts? iMap accounts? Sub domains and so on.

Also, how much space, how much transfer?

What about reliability?

Also how about the location of the server, would you like it to be in the UK or does it not matter on the location?

Its literally a website advertising his company and pictures of previous work

so homepage, price list, contact page... basic html, no database ect
