Just a general discussion on the Honda S2000 really...

Anyone got one? Had one? Driven one?

One of the fastest 2.0 engines around apparently: 2 litre i-VTEC GT.
237 bhp.
0-62mph in 6.2 seconds.
150mph top speed.

I'm assuming it's modded then. As they only rev to around 9k standard.

LOL thats like saying "nice Saxo, I prefer Ferraris though". The S2000 and Viper are in different leagues. ALthough the S2000 would destroy a viper on track...or going round any corner.

VTEC at it's prime. Not much down below but pile the revs on and its a thing of magnificence. A bit skittish in the wet though.. Even Jeremy Clarkson praised it, saying it made the Z4 and Boxster look like girls cars in comparison. Would rather get the slightly more practical yet wilder DC5 though :P

i was thinking about getting one of these before i got my type r. Its and amazing car with an awesome engine. Just the insurance and the fact it has 2 seats is what put me off. And in the real world theres not much between the s2000 and the ep3 type r.

Jules
4th April 2008, 22:00
I dont really like the S2000, it nice to look at but horrid to drive. I used to work for Phoenix Honda so driven a few.
Everytime i got to drive one it was taking it into the repair centre cos they seem to get "un-stuck" very easily.
I much prefer the NSX

Danr
4th April 2008, 22:07
Nice matey, get some piccies up of them

Also Jul, NSX's are totally different to the s2000. As Certi mentioned when the dodge came up....

Just out of interest, how much are they brand new?

Asaxo
4th April 2008, 23:46
I am not sure how much he paid - he won't tell me!
I know it was between 17 and 20k.
Check out S2000-4-u or something like that, they have loads on there website.
Not sure how much a brand new one is, I would expect it would be between 23 and 27k - not sure though.

Jazz
4th April 2008, 23:50
does over 60 in first? You sure?? Must have majorly long gearing then. My Type-R does just over 60 in second... wouldn't have thought the gearing on the S2k was that different... sounds lovely though! :)

edit- they retail for £28k new.

Asaxo
4th April 2008, 23:54
Yeah sure does!
What does your type-R rev too, by that I mean red line?

Jazz
4th April 2008, 23:57
Yeah sure does!

the redline begins at 7500rpm, but hits the limiter 7800rpm. Its a H22A engine though, slightly more torque but less horsepower, I think the S2k has the K20 Engine?? Which is much revvier (I'll have a look in a minute)..

Sorry- K20 engines are used in the Civic and Integra R's the S2000 uses the F20C engine I believe, with peak power coming in at 8300rpm. Lol, must be like driving a motor-bike, revs gallore. I can't wait to have a drive of one. :)

Asaxo
5th April 2008, 00:02
Yeah I think so, the red line is at 9k (iirc) and still pulls in first at 8k.
Pretty amazing engines really!

Must sound good.. For a N/A 2.0 I can't think of anything standard that makes as much power as the S2000.. Mine is noway as revvy, do you know when the VTEC kicks-in on the S2000? I'm guessing just over 6000rpm... You hear the engine note change when it happens. Mine does it at 5800rpm and lasts until 7.8k.

Asaxo
5th April 2008, 00:07
Yeah they are just like motorbike engines.. sounds like an F1 car lol.

biteme - yeah they do look the sex, but i think i actually prefer the original! I also think they look abit like a Dodge Viper?

No, but i will ask dad and let you know for sure!
I am quite interested actually. Can you notice the change in the engine quite alot? Is it almost like changing down a gear?

when the VTEC kicks in its not a massive difference but you feel the car really accelerate and the engine becomes noisier as it comes "on-cam". Happens in the upper-revs. Just floor it in first or second and watch the rev counter carefully. AS the the needle gets to around the 6000rpm mark (maybe a little more since its so revvy) then you'll notice even more power and it gets louder. It's quite obvious in the Accord when that happens, almost like a mini-turbo boost at just under 6k. Your dad will need to take it to the redline to find out ;)

do like s2000 drivin a few at work but didnt really think much of them, k20 and f20 series engines are nothing compared to the pervouis b16,b18,h22 that where found in the dc2 ATR and vtis/jordans. But strong engine have got grunt, love the inside tho. Woudnt mind one but could think of spending 8k on somthing a bit more exciting

AM4R
5th April 2008, 15:56
all vtec engines hit vetc at different revs. Depends if its a b,d,h,k or f series. S2k's rev the most so vtec kicks in later. You will feel vtec. My car is only a vtec-e (d15) and vtec kicks in at 4k, but there is a noticeable different in sound.

One of the fastest 2.0 engines around apparently

I think it probably "was" once upon a time but there are a lot of other 2l engines that produce the about the same if not more power (i.e. Megane R26, Astra VXR, Leon Cupra-R, etc...).

EDIT: Also, I think your sig is wrong Jazz. The Accord Type R is 209bhp. 212 is the ps figure...even on the facelift ones. Unless its modded obviously.

My Dad used to be pretty high up within Honda, and Borrowed the UK Production Managers S2000 for a Weekend, they did a swap for my dads comfy Accord. Was the most fun i've had in a car.

It was in banana Yellow (as they call it) jet black 18" alloys. Had a few Spoon racing stickers dotted around, not sure what they had done to it though. Looked the nuts. Sounded amazing. And we gave it a bit of a "test drive", results from this..OMG Amazing engineering and performance from a 2.0.

Was a sad moment when it had to be taken back :(

lol... you're probably right. Just read a user review and they feel the same (see link). Otherwise the poor thing would be very slow out of junctions with such a llllong first gear. Which of course the S2k isn't!
