Has anyone else tried Vista now that SP1 is out? I installed it last week with SP1 and all the updates and now it runs games no slower than xp does!

SP1 seems to have fixed all the problems on my machine, crysis, COD4 ect all work fine! :)

Vista Ultimate X64 FTW!! :y: :y:

If it runs games no slower than xp why bother upgrading?
XP is still fine for me.

I think i may have got it on a pre-release then but it is good. I like the visuals and features in vista so its worth having if you dont pay loads for it ;)

I think techy's have more problems than others as we always fiddle with stuff and break it lol. Still IMO i think its worth having now.

I bought a new PC and it cam with Vista as OEM . tbh ive loved it, widgets, drag and drop burn feature, the visuals, and hasnt taken much getting used to, what is annoying me though is its inability tp play MP4's, ive just downloaded RealPlayer, but thats having problems playing my MP4's recorded from a SE K850i too.
Anyone know any good programs to play MP4's with in Vista, or have i just gotta download a codec?

Check out Kubuntu, Ubuntus sister. runs KDE instead of Gnome Desktop Environment, I prefer it myself.

Vista rocks, never had a problem with it,
the only people that moan about it are the people trying too hard to be geeks. tbh.

Linux is effin' awful.
.........however it will probably be the future.

I can give you many reasons to why I do not agree/like Vista ranging from personal preference to in depth technical speak.

Also, you don't have to be a geek to use Linux or any other variation of the Unix kernel.

I like linux on the small ASUS PCEEE laptop.... mainly because of the penguin belly slide game, it rocks. However linux on a desktop in my opinion is pritty useless.

<3 that penguin.

scrnix, you dont like Vista?
why?
it looks nice.
if you have a decent spec PC itll run smooth all day long.
All i care/look for in an OS.

Pretty useless? What's your argument against that.

Here is a typical argument:

- Linux distros can't play Windows games
That's because they've been developed for Windows and not for Linux. This is at fault of the developers of the game, not Linux. Also, many Windows games can now be played on Linux through Wine.

If Linux was useless, why do I currently have a box (Up and running for the past month) running Kubuntu 7.10 used every day for development work?

DarylVTR

I wouldnt bother if you have xp and you are thinking of spending loads of vista mind you.

;)

most things are developed for windows, so you may aswell save hassle and run windows.

Depends what you use your pc for i guess. I personally cant be arsed to give linux a try when windows does the job

All i care/look for in an OS.

Many reasons. The Monopoly game played by Micrososft for example. Or maybe you'd like something directed at the OS itself? Well how about this:

The developers of Windows Vista and Micrososfts marketing campaigns state the visual effects in Vista is brand new technology. Whereas Linux has had such technology and effects available on most desktop environments for a good few years.

Or maybe the fact that it is supposed to be so secure yet within days of its release I was able to get hold of a keycode generator.

Or maybe the fact that the first release was meant to work wonders but as quoted, it was "slow" running games. Even games developed for it.

Just a few little things ;)

Can I just say, I will keep my mouth shut about Windows but when an argument like "It's useless" or "Shit" come into play, well, it's time to get the ammunition out. ;)

scrnix, because you work with Linux?
just as Daryl plays game using Windows!?

Can we not turn this into a *nix vs windows argument, we all have our preferences.

cant say i see why anyone feels they need vista, apart from the fact that its new. Personally I'd run Windows 2000 always preferd it to Windows XP, never felt the need for XP either.

For those of you who do actually use linux, check out archlinux, arch is a rolling release, mearning theres no huge upgrades and new software releases are out very fast. If your a kde fan (maybe even if your not), try kdemod (arch only). Much faster than standard kde, and looks a whole lot better.

nothing you said there is actualy directed at the OS itself....

you just bitched at the OMG M$ make lots of money and buy shit!!.... well, you know, thats what most companies do....

and about the stealing ideas..... that too is what companies do to keep up with the competition, just like the analogue stick on the N64, then released later in the PS1's life, then PS2, dreamcast, Xbox, PS3, 360... ZOMG THEY ALL STOLE AND COPIED THE IDEA!!

oh and the "within days of its release I was able to get hold of a keycode generator." has nothing to do with it not being a secure OS, just means it can have Pirate copies....

also, from day one of Vista's release many times it has been proven to be more secure than Mac OS X.

plus, there are many features in Macs Leopard thats been in Linux for a while... so bitch at them too.... or is it just cos they are not as big as M$ and u wont get as much attention?

I think the only reason linux does not beat windows, is the ammount of backing windows has.

Linx is a better OS, no question. But with the billions of £££ that windows has poured into it, Linux cannot compete. I use Redhat on my servers and its the most stable, easyto use OS i have ever come across, it has never EVER crashed, not even a progam glitch in the 4 YEARS thats the the server has been up! 4 YEARS! straight! only opened up to clean our dust, but never switched off.

I Run vista x64 ultimate on both my machines and my laptop and its alright, does my head in when you have to give it permission to do everything! the ammount of time syou have to click allow to install something, so that got turned off.

It wont run some of the system i use for the desdign and development work for RCD, so thats gay!

Also, it dies, regulary, i run cod4 on here, that dies, HL2 (DOD and source) that dies randomly for no reason.

Then all of a sudden, my frame rate will hit the floor for 10 secs then come back up. Why? No idea, vista! lol

All in its its aweful, but they've poured so much sweet sauce on it, you can never tell.

I didnt pay for it, so im not moaning, if i'd shelled out hundreds, i'd be more than PISSED!

Just my 2p :)

I was just giving of a few reasons. But if you want to turn this into an OS war we can do so, but I do have better things to do with my time. I was simply sticking up for "Linux" while others were slating it.

i have vista x64 ultimate too and play a pot load of games on it and never had any frame rate issues on it at all, and iv been using it way before day 1 as i had all the betas in its longhorn stages.

and i payed for it when it came out.

I agree that Linux is a very very good OS for servers, but as a main household computer it just does not compare to a OS with so much support and aplications, and software.

Firstly, Linux has plenty of support, in fact it has one of the largest support databases of users (technical and not so technical) on the Internet. Then again, not just talking about Linux here but also other Unix variations such as BSD.

In regards to applications, there are plenty of applications available on Linux that will do everything you require. The best bit? The majority of the code is open source and therefore free.

Something I really appreciate about most Linux distributions is the ability to search for an application and have it downloaded and installed through a GUI instead of having to search across the web for the applications compressed format and deal with it yourself. For example Kubuntu has a central database managed by Adept. It's bloody brilliant.
