Right, you get the power that the amp outputs (you need to read the RMp figures not the max power ones. Secondly, I'd advise you look at other brands than Sony....
If your on a budget, then have a look at JBL gear :y:

so, say if i had a 500w amp and a 1000w sub, id only be getting 500w? so to get a 1000w i need a 1000w sub and a 1000w amp?

Indeed so. But like I said, its the RMS figures that you need to look at. The max power figures are as they say, MAX POWER - this means nothing really - just the ampunt of power that the cone and driver can handle before they are pushed too far and break....
I'd also advise that you get a speaker that can handle just a bit more RMS power than what the AMP can deliver, this way you have better chance of not peaking and damaging the speaker.

e g
jbl subwoofer 1000watts 300rms
jbl amp 1000watts
300 rms
look for where it says rms.doestn matter about the thousand/dont look at the max/peak power and let it make you think it is really good
so bassicaly you need to match the rms from the amp to the subwoofer.
to be honest i dont think u really need any more then 300rms or ull need to dosh out on bigger wiring etc.if you want to talk bout what to get .just add my msn taj303@hotmail.co.uk and ill show u some decent stuff as ive had alot!!

What's your current set up?
What type of music do you mostly listen to in the car? This will affect what sized sub will be best for your needs!

also budget for the sub would be good too :y:
also you really dont want to heard from miles around it just attracts theives, ive been there and done that and its not nice when you come out to the car and all the stuff is gone, get some sound deadening in the car, you need to keep the sound waves in the car, remember other people arent paying to lisen to your music

found this review :
This is about as good as it gets when talking about 4ch 600w amps. The cream of the affordable crop and its rising to the top. This amp sports a cool heat sink as well as great acoustics and sonic superiority. It gracefully reproduces mids and highs thanks to its new mosfet high power circuitry. On the other hand however, it will drive the #@*! out of some subwoofers.
Very clean output is also thanks to the new circuitry and the signal to noise ration is somewhere around 100db @ rms wattage of 300w per ch. It can drive your entire system and not even break a sweat. Since it is 1 ohm stable multiple subs can be used and multiple mid and high sets. If you use 4 ohm drivers 4 per channel can be powered. Example is 4 subs on right channel 1 and 4 subs on left channel 2 and 4 component sets on ch 3 and 4 .
Very versatile, affordable, and sonically excellent, is the signature of the Drive Series. They pack a lot of clean watts for the price and are very reliable when pushed hard. Competition capable and ready drive a butt load of speakers

stay clear of sony in my opinon. my brother has the 1000watt JBL sub and amp package and for the money its excellent, you wont want any more bass than that. he has it set on +7 on the HU and it will go up to +15
