im after one for road use and abit off roading. would like one with a light frame so it makes it easier to manover aswell.

any one got any suggestions?

it is a push bike that im wanting not a motor bike.

good thread, ive been wanting one recently for some extra cardio, runnings boring as fook.

Problem im having is every bikes either full suspension or if its not its very expensive or crap. I dont like full suspension cus i never sit down and the shocks absorb all your pedalling powah

good as youll get a shit dual sus bike for £150.

you might be best off buying a 2nd hand bike as you may get a better bike for your money.

...or in most cases if you go into a small chain bikeshop you offer 10% less than catalogue price theyll prob sort you out some sorta deal :)

tbh mate your not gonna get much of a bike for £150 you should try argos or JJB.

Should spend about £300 for cheap bike. Anything less is going to be heavy, shite forks and the groupset will be made out of chocolate.

You could buy one off ebay i suppose, or get a fully rigid bike for £200 by claud butler and spend a bit buying parts for it.

Mark51
24th February 2008, 19:53
im not wanting to do anything special on it. i had a Rallye Max when i was younger and it was mint, lol

my mate had a Salmon (iirc) and the frame as very light. cold probably strecth to £200 for a bike but dont really want to be fobbed off with "any old tat" by someone that doesnt care weather im getting the right bike or not

Mochachino
24th February 2008, 19:58
would you consider a second hand bike? If so il have a look on ebay for ya?

Mark51
24th February 2008, 20:01
yeah i would but how could i make sure that its not fooked?

Mochachino
24th February 2008, 20:03
i suppose you cant, but its like anything, buying sumthing off ebay just by trusting the seller. The only things that you should be bothered about being fooked is the frame and forks, obviously the more expenxive parts.

Anything else can be replaced really easily and very cheap. Il have a quick look see if there is anything and link them back here :y:

this is the sort of bike id look for for you anyway, its new aswell.

And is a good base to start on if you want to put better parts on.

My dad bought one for about £200 fully rigid, was a very reliable bike and quality parts for that price. Ive changed every single bit on it now to Shimano XT/XTR, raceface etc and magura forks. Now a race ready bike :)

£150 wont really get you much tbh. Only a Cheapo heavy full suspension pile of wank lol. But, for a little extra, for example from Halfords if you push it to £200/£250 you'll be able to get an entry level hard tail GT Aggressor 3 which has Front and rear tektro mechanical discs, 24 speed rapidfire shimano gears, lightweight alloy frame, front suspension etc and Halfords have 2007 range on sale at pretty good prices.

Also for that money you can get 2007 Carrera Vulcan which is an equivalent model with equivalent spec.It has same brakes, Sram SX-4 (i think) gearing and it has trigger shift gears. I'd say the GT is better out of the 2 as it has the better frame and brand recognition. Hope this helps you?

Edit:

Also i would be careful when purchasing from ebay. You dont have the fall back if theres any problems with it

For that money mechanicle brakes are no better than v's in fact their worse. Only advantage is they wont get soaked in mud and water. Shouldnt really get discs till you get to about the £500 region imo

check out giant xtc on ebay, the xtc has a racing frame and is a good base model to start, they are light and have a good basic spec, and mph hydraulic brakes - then upgrade as and when! bf sold this one a year ago for 700! after having it 3 yrs!

aye you can, but its like any hobbie. If your serious about it the price regions are HUGE! Mountain and road bikes can go up to about £5k and its quite common to see £1k bikes upwards.

They do depreciate as much as cars aswell lol. I built one for about £1200 No where near top of the range, but if i sell it now im looking at about £450 and its 2 years old :(

24th February 2008, 21:25
gt aggressors the older ones eg aggressor 1 /2 /3 you can get around 150-200 quid 2nd hand these days.. fairly lightweight and not bad specs... rst forks which is above best of budget...

lol!!!

bike was 400 3 yrs ago, he upgraded the items as they wore, all xtr kit came from hongkong, xtr group set cost 300! all other parts came second hand from ebay! - sold that and got a composite c1 xtc!, now changing kit gear set again, from hongkong! you save a fourtune!

katiescar
24th February 2008, 21:45
if you can stretch 2 400 will save you money in the long term as you could sell it on when you get bored. my own trek cost me 280 again ebay - and thats was a 650 quid bike when new, and was a year old!

My dads raced all sorts of bikes since he was 16 (58 now, stopped 2 years ago) I'll ask him what he reccomends. I remember when he built his 3K bike for competition use and it got nicked by some pikey. :n: Sad day for dad, good thing it had immense insurance. My dad's amazing with bikes/cr*p with cars :p Even though he did let me get the stupid bike I ride around on now for my birthday :( forget the name-All I know is that it weighs more than my sax.

Mm, you'll have a job getting something for £150 that's much good. Gather a few mo0re pennies and go for one of the lower Spesh Hardrocks, that'd be your best bet!

Interesting to see some people off here ride as well! I used to be big into it last year, stopped for the winter though.

Can you get a Kona for around £200? Not seen much of their stuff recently. Specialized seem to be taking all the limelight at the mo

Ben_L
26th February 2008, 00:02
you cant get a kona with a half decent spec for less that 600 tbh. as i said you only really paying for frame and the name and they might stick a fairly decent rear mech on if your lucky too.
