quick question on VAG engines
1: is the 1.8T in the polo gti a 4 cylinder unit?
2: is it the same engine from ibiza and leon cupras or golf gtis?
3: if it is the same why only 150bhp? and could something as simple as a remap hike the power to nearer the 200 mark?
thanks guys'n'girls:y:

1) yes
2) Yes- although previous generations, newer ones use the 2.0 FSi Turbo.
3) Different levels of tune, my dad's Octavia vRS has the same engine but with 180bhp, remap can get it higher but different companies do different packages so best to search on that. But remapping does hike the power up... quite alot.

The 1.8t is a 20v engine(5v per cylinder, 3 inlet 2 exhaust), it comes in various flavours, 125n/a, 150 turbo, 180 turbo and 225 turbo. the higher models come with better turbos, intercooling and some other bits like clutch etc.
The new VAG cars use 2.0t 16v 198bhp, bar the polo.
Remap may hike power but it won't be the same as buying a higher power model to start with.

1. 5 cylinder
2. same engine yes
3. diffrent spec of the engine really, mainly you will get the 180bhp models and 225bhp models
diffrences in the more powerful ones is stuff like bigger turbo, extra intercooler better internals etc
180 models tend to see around 200bhp after remaps whilst 225bhp see around 265bhp

2: ie mk4 golf gti?
3: what do you mean by different level of tune whats different to it? is it just the way the ecu is mapped or are there internal changes to?
thanks!

there are a few companys that do remaps! sometimes pushing things a bit more to there limit can have effects on reliableness such as maf sensors etc
also mpg can alter, some say for the better some say for the worst
these reasons i never opted to go that route, parts and general maintenance of the car is enough to already keep me on my toes

..many vRS owners (who are not really even modders) say the one thing you should do to the VAG 1.8T if its not in highest form already, is map it. Ours is std 180, but many owners we've spoken to swear by it. Even say it has no bad effect on mpg, surprisingly.

ok cheers it seems crazy how much extra power and torque u can get out of it for so little money imagine how much it would cost for a 60bhp gain on a saxo!

...absolutely, these engines have massive potential. Its no secret that the 1.8T VAG 20v is one of the most tunable lumps (considering maintenance, reliability, scope etc). I've heard of 1.8T's pushing 400+bhp lol.

at a big big cost! dont be under the impression it will be cheap, sure the remap seems value for money but any higher is going to have to see money invested

Exactly. Remap is serious value for money for the power-for-pound, but after that all the parts to crank the figure up will be alot, especially compared to our 'ickle French cars, where we can bag a cat-back for 200 or so....Not so with Milteck systems for Turbos, oh no lol. But then Jap tuning is more expensive still, so its not really that bad.
